Praslin-Mahé ferry vs. flight on the same day in summer
by ChristopheMe · 2026-03-01 · 0 replies
Thanks so much to both of you for your replies.

From experience, does anyone know if, in July (with the risk of wind), there’s less risk of major delays or cancellations for the Praslin-Mahé transfer by taking a ferry or an Air Seychelles flight? Thanks again.
Praslin-Mahé ferry and international flight on the same day in summer
by ChristopheMe · 2026-02-16 · 3 replies
Hello, We’ll be on vacation in the Seychelles in July and will visit La Digue, Praslin, and then Mahé in that order. Our 21-year-old daughter will have to leave earlier than us while we’re still on Praslin. We’re hesitating between the following options for her return: Option 1: - July 9: ferry from Praslin at 2:00 PM – arrives in Mahé at 3:15 PM. - International flight departing at 7:30 PM. - The connection is very tight, leaving a 1- to 2-hour safety margin in case the ferry is delayed. Option 2: - July 9: ferry from Praslin at 8:00 AM – arrives in Mahé at 9:15 AM. - International flight departing at 7:30 PM. - This is safer than Option 1, but it means she’d lose the whole day, spending it alone. We’d pay for a day pass giving her access to a hotel pool to kill time. From experience, what do you think? Are significant ferry delays (2 hours or more) common, especially in July with the swell, making Option 1 too risky? Or is even Option 2 too risky, and should our daughter take a ferry the day before (though that would mean missing a lot of time with us)? Or should she take an Air Seychelles flight the same day instead of the ferry? Is that safer than the ferry? But it’s much more expensive… I know no one can give me certainty on this, but I’d just love to hear your gut feeling from those who have experience with inter-island transfers in the Seychelles. Thanks so much in advance! Christophe
Which trek to choose in the Dolomites in August?

Thanks again so much for this follow-up answer. I’ve booked my trek (via Alta Via 1). We’ll be getting up early to avoid the crowds and the afternoon storms. And we’re keeping our fingers crossed for the weather ;-)

Hi "Valmichel", sorry, I didn’t see that I’d gotten your reply.

A huge thank you for your super detailed and really helpful answer! I’ll take a closer look at all of this as soon as I can!

One little question: you mentioned having to abandon part of the trek because of the weather. From what I’ve read, I got the impression that the weather in August is pretty predictable—sunny in the morning and storms rolling in during the afternoon. Was that more or less your experience, or can you also get full days of rain, and that’s what made you give up on part of the trek?

Thanks in advance for your feedback... or anyone else’s!
Which trek to choose in the Dolomites in August?

Hi there, I’d like to spend a week in the Dolomites (4 days of trekking and a few day hikes). Unfortunately, it’ll be in August (no choice). My questions are: - For a first time in the Dolomites, which 4-day trek should I pick? I’d love the most spectacular and varied landscapes possible. Around 1,000m elevation gain per day. - Is it busier the first or last week of August? - Will it still feel "quiet" while hiking? Not like a conga line in August...?

Thanks so much for your help! !
Swimming with dolphins in Mauritius: avoid
by ChristopheMe · 2025-08-15 · 9 replies
This is the excursion we shouldn’t have done in Mauritius.

We did it with The Friendly Dodo, but from what I saw, it’s the same with most agencies.

Departure at 6 a.m. (even though the sun rises at 7 a.m. in August). Why? Because there’s only one well-known spot where the dolphins are, and all the agencies race to get there first. For 45 to 60 minutes, it’s just straight-line navigation to the spot. No one’s looking for dolphins—we’re just speeding there in silence, full throttle. Once we arrive, there are already 5-6 boats. The dolphins are there, sure. The boats fight for the best position, cutting off the dolphins’ path, and then—go, go, go—everyone jumps in. Not a single instruction is given on how to approach the dolphins respectfully. Result: everyone jumps in at the same time from 3 boats, creating a huge splash, and rushes toward the dolphins. Outcome: faced with this chaos, the dolphins dive, and you can’t see them from the boat anymore. The swimmers who are right in their path might see them pass below for a few seconds at best. Everyone climbs back onto the boats, and as soon as the dolphins resurface, the same cycle starts all over again. After 5 or 6 jumps like this (3 of which I didn’t even see the dolphins), it’s back to the port the same way we came. Not a single explanation is given during the entire excursion about the dolphins themselves or how to approach them. Safety-wise, I didn’t feel comfortable either with all the boats fighting for position. I bumped into another boat (no pain) while swimming, and I wasn’t reassured about the propellers. With all this circus, my daughters didn’t even want to get in the water. The problem is, when you stay on the boat, you don’t get much out of it either—because as soon as the dolphins resurface, everyone jumps in haphazardly and scares them off again. Having done the same kind of outing in Réunion, I can confirm it’s nothing like this (much better organized and ultimately much more rewarding in Réunion).

Under these conditions, this is an activity we never should’ve done! !
Mauritius: encounter with dolphins
by ChristopheMe · 2025-08-15 · 0 replies
Hi, Based on my experience, I strongly advise against the dolphin-swimming excursion in Mauritius. We did it with Friendly Dodo (but I got the impression it was the same with the other boats we saw, and it’s the excursion we shouldn’t have done). We left at 6 a.m. (even though the sun rises at 7 a.m. in August). Why? Because there’s only one well-known spot where the dolphins are, and all the agencies race to get there first. For 45 to 60 minutes, it’s just straight-line navigation to the spot. No one’s looking for dolphins—we’re just speeding along in silence toward the spot. Once we arrived, there were already 5-6 boats. The dolphins were there, but the boats were fighting for the best position, cutting off the dolphins’ path. Then—go, go, go—everyone jumps in. Not a single instruction was given on how to approach the dolphins respectfully. Result: everyone jumps in at the same time from 3 boats, creating a huge splash, and rushes toward the dolphins. The dolphins dive in response to the chaos, disappearing from view. Swimmers in their path might see them pass below for a few seconds at best. Everyone climbs back onto the boats, and as soon as the dolphins resurface, the same cycle starts again. After 5 or 6 rounds like this (including 3 where I didn’t even see the dolphins), it’s back to the port the same way we came. Not a single explanation was given during the entire excursion about the dolphins themselves or how to approach them properly. Safety-wise, I also didn’t feel comfortable with all the boats competing for position. I bumped into another boat (no pain) while swimming, and I wasn’t reassured about the propellers. With all this chaos, my daughters didn’t even want to get in the water. The problem is, if you stay on the boat, you don’t get much out of it either—because as soon as the dolphins resurface, everyone jumps in haphazardly, scaring them off again. Having done a similar outing in Réunion, I can confirm it’s nothing like this (much better organized and ultimately more rewarding in Réunion).

Under these conditions, this is an activity we never should’ve done! !

Merci beaucoup ! Christophe
Vol Le Cap - Durban via agences South Africa TO ou SA Airlines
by ChristopheMe · 2017-10-29 · 2 replies

by ChristopheMe · 2017-10-27 · 2 replies

by ChristopheMe · 2017-10-25 · 5 replies
Bonjour,

Christophe
Climat Hautes-Pyrénées en août
by ChristopheMe · 2015-12-18 · 1 reply
