Northern Chile, Andean impressions.
For the car, I rented an AWD Subaru Crosstrek from Salfarent. It’s all-wheel drive—I think it’s designed for all kinds of roads.... I’ll still go over the contract carefully 👍
That’s the one I rented in 2024 (and I have the same at home, though mine’s better—the North American model). It handles absolutely everything; the only limitation is the ground clearance, which is already pretty solid. You wouldn’t believe where I’ve taken it...
Northern Chile was probably my most beautiful trip.

What's the current situation with the wildfires in Canada?
What's the current situation with the wildfires in Canada?
Evacuations? Hardly any... Hundreds of homes have been destroyed. Besides, I don’t see what’s funny about it.

Anyway, I’m picking up on something mentioned earlier: Lytton isn’t in the Okanagan, but in the Fraser Canyon. The Okanagan gets hot in the summer, but it’s nothing compared to the corridor connecting Pemberton, Lillooet, Lytton, Spences Bridge, and Ashcroft. The last two towns are actually in the only area of the country that could be called a desert (and definitely not Osoyoos, contrary to what you might read here and there...). If I showed photos of the area, most people wouldn’t believe it was in Canada.

What's the current situation with the wildfires in Canada?
Honestly, it’s not looking good at all... The summer hasn’t been horribly hot, but it’s been really dry, and the (big) fires have been multiplying over the past few days.
A provincial state of emergency has just been declared in British Columbia: https://www.emergencyinfobc.gov.bc.ca/

What's the current situation with wildfires in Canada?
Hello,
Yes, like every summer, there are a lot of wildfires in British Columbia. This summer is very dry again, and the medium-term outlook isn’t very encouraging on that front.
Right now, there are several major fires: in Boston Bar (south of Lytton), Pemberton (north of Whistler), Clinton (north of Kamloops), and Kimberley (near Alberta). I’d say there’s very little chance the situation will improve in the short term.
That said, if I were you, I wouldn’t cancel anything—there are always alternatives.

What's the best time to visit and what type of vehicle should you use for northern Chile?
Hi there,
I logged hundreds of kilometers in northern Chile in 2024 with a Subaru Crosstrek (pretty much the same as the one I have at home, though not as good 😎), and it was perfect. It’s a model known for going anywhere. And I can tell you, I tackled some rough tracks... The main thing is to bring extra gas cans in the trunk, since gas stations aren’t exactly everywhere !

Where to stay in New York to cut costs?
Jersey City, near the subway. Direct and significantly cheaper. Or Brooklyn.
Should we really travel to the USA and put up with authoritarian drift?
What a magnificent summary of shortcuts and other inaccuracies...
What are the different ways to get to Machu Picchu?
Hi there,
I went in 2018, so it’s been a while, but here’s what I did:
- By bus from Ollantaytambo to Hidroelectrica (guaranteed to make you queasy); - On foot from Hidroelectrica to Aguas Calientes (gorgeous); - On foot from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu (running) and same on the way back; - By train from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo (stunning, but really expensive); - By bus from Ollantaytambo to Cusco.

Route questions in Peru and a side trip to Chile
Is it possible to go to the Salinas y Aguada Blanca reserve with your own vehicle?
I think it's possible, but the road is tough. I went there on a day tour, solo; it was perfect.
Is it better to return via Andahaylas, Pampachiri, Nazca? Or via Ayacucho to Paracas?
I did Cusco -> Nazca -> Paracas, all by bus.

Peru itinerary questions and side trip to Chile
Hi, it really depends on what there is to see in Chile and in the northern part.
Is there anything special?
Northern Chile is stunning and there are practically no tourists. I spent almost two weeks there in 2024 (before heading to Bolivia) and it remains my most beautiful trip.

What’s daily life like in France?
You guys, I suspect you watch too many news channels like CNews.
You, I suspect you read too much Libé and Télérama and watch too much Quotidien and France 3.
I won’t get into that debate; I know what this poor France has become, and it’s one of the reasons I left the country nearly two decades ago. That’ll be my last word on the subject.

Ivert's first trip to Colombia is planned for 2026 (in other words, another one talking about it without knowing)
True. But you know what? I’ve never been to Afghanistan, Yemen, Sudan, or Somalia (god forbid...) and yet, I know they’re hellholes!
One downside, though—he apparently lives in Canada. Usually, Canadians are the first to worry about a country’s safety, and on their various maps about Colombia, there are way more red zones than on the French government’s site for this country.
I don’t need the Canadian or French government to decide whether or not to go to a country. I know where to get information, and I’m not some clueless newbie when it comes to trip planning.

Have you traveled in Latin America?
Yeah, in Peru, Chile, and Bolivia. And even without living there, I know exactly what daily life is like (everywhere) in France... 🤪

Colombia is way safer than France... End of discussion.
Vancouver-Toronto by train
I’ve been living in Vancouver for over 7 years and I’ve never set foot on it (and God knows I’ve done plenty of hikes!). Once again, it’s ridiculously expensive, and there’s nothing more to see there than at Lynn Canyon or LSCR, which are right nearby.
But hey, I’m not on Instagram, Facebook, or anything else... 😉
