Hi everyone! I’ve been in Malaysia for a month now and still have two more to go. I started traveling with friends, but I’ll be solo for the next month and a half. We did a pretty classic route: Perhentians, Cameron Highlands (which I found pointless), Tioman, and Kinabatangan in Borneo. Now I’m thinking of heading to Redang Island—Langkawi is also an option, but it doesn’t appeal to me as much. Any feedback on these two spots? Especially Redang? Any thoughts on the diving there? So far, I haven’t had much luck with diving—at the Perhentians, it was pretty disastrous with water at 31°C 😵😫 I’d love to find a nice island where I can meet people (locals and travelers) because going from a group of six to solo at the end is going to feel weird. So I’m open to all tips and opinions. Also, I’d love to hear about Langkawi, and if anyone knows of an island that’s a bit more off the beaten path, that’d be amazing. Hi there, I’d like to know if it’s possible to catch a 9:00 AM flight to Lombok with Air Asia after landing in Kuala Lumpur at 6:10 AM from Paris with Malaysia Airlines (we don’t have checked baggage, but our tickets are separate, so we’ll need to go through immigration). Same question for the return: arriving in Kuala Lumpur at 9:20 PM from Lombok and departing for Paris at 11:40 PM. I’ve read that the two airlines are in different terminals at the airport. The other option is to take flights with a 7- to 8-hour layover. What do you think is better? Thanks!

We’re a family with two kids who’ll be 3½ and 6½ years old at the time of the trip. We live in the city, and the little ones aren’t big hikers in nature, but they’re pretty cool with transportation. Travel month: May 2026 for 3 weeks (round trip) What we’re looking for: a relaxed trip combining nature, culture, beautiful beaches with snorkeling, and sunshine! We want to take our time with the kids and avoid driving 6 hours every couple of days. We’ve traveled as a couple before but not much with the kids (in Europe, by car).

Choices: I ruled out Mexico for various reasons. I’d also dismissed Indonesia because it seemed more tiring with kids in terms of transportation, but it’s back in my top 2 now! 😊 I also crossed off Sri Lanka because of the monsoon on the west coast in May. So, I’m left with Malaysia (KL-Malacca-Selangor-Borneo Sabah-Perhentian Islands area) or Java (Yogyakarta-Bromo-Karimunjawa Islands)... This list isn’t exhaustive—just some rough ideas.

Budget-wise, we’d like to stay in small hotels with pools for under 100 € in cities, but no need for a pool at the beach. Thanks in advance for your tips! Hélène

My partner and I are heading to Malaysia in early July. We arrive in KL on 03/07 in the late afternoon and leave from KL on 18/07 in the evening.

We’ve planned: Day 1: KL Day 2: Cameron Highlands day trip from KL Day 3: KL → Taman Negara (bus) Day 4 & 5: Trek in Taman Negara Day 6: Taman Negara → Perhentians (bus + boat) Day 7 & 8: Perhentians Day 9: Perhentians → Pulau Redang (boat + bus + boat) Day 10 & 11: Pulau Redang Day 12: Pulau Redang → George Town (flight) Day 13: George Town Day 14: George Town → KL (flight) Day 15: KL + return flight at 23:45

I feel like this might not be the most efficient route. Any tips on how to optimize the order of things (even though I’d prefer to start with Taman Negara)? How’s the best way to travel between places?

Should we book everything (transport, accommodation, activities) in advance, or can we figure it out day by day? I prefer spontaneous travel to keep things flexible, but will there be availability, or will we be struggling constantly?

I’m spending a few days in Singapore, which I love. I was thinking about maybe heading to Tioman, but it’s a real hassle with the bus and ferry times—plus, you pretty much have to stay overnight in Mersing for safety. I also looked into Bintan, which seems pretty nice. You need a visa since it’s in Indonesia, and it’s a big, beautiful island. There’s even a Club Med, so it must be a decent spot. Tioman looks stunning in videos, but yeah… I’m still going back and forth on this one!

What do you think of this plan? Is the Malacca to Penang bus trip late at night?

Hi there! We’ll be in Singapore for a few days and have 9 days off from there. We’d love to visit Borneo, obviously not everything since we only have 9 days. Ideally, we’d like to spend the last 2 days near the sea in Sabah. Of course, we know we’ll only be able to see a small part of Borneo, but the logistics seem a bit tricky in such a short time.

There’s so much to do that I’m feeling a little overwhelmed. Any feedback from people who know the area (I imagine not many have been there for such a short trip...) would be great! Thanks!

Hi, I tried to book 15 nights at Abdul Chalet in the Perhentians for May 2025 starting on the first of December, but I noticed that this year, in April 2024, we stayed there for 10 nights. Today, the response was: "you can only book 7 nights—it’s the new way of operating for 2025." I’m really surprised because we’ve stayed at this guesthouse five times in less than 10 years without any issues, even if the staff isn’t very friendly and the restaurant is just okay. But it’s such a peaceful place that we love. Do you know of any quiet, reasonably priced hotels or guesthouses in the Perhentian Islands you could recommend? Have any of you stayed at Coral View Island Resort recently?

Hello everyone! So glad to be back on this forum to swap some great tips. I’m heading to Malaysia from mid-May to mid-August 2025 for nearly 3 months. With my advanced certification in hand for a few years now, I’m on the lookout for the best dive spots in Malaysia. I’ve obviously heard about the Perhentians and Sipadan. Someone mentioned Tioman too, but not necessarily for diving. Do you have any feedback on these places for diving? (visibility, marine life diversity, etc.) Any idea about the rates for fun dives? Dive centers you’d recommend? Any help would be super valuable for planning the trip, so thanks a million in advance to those who take the time to reply. Safe travels, everyone!!
