Problem with Sixt in Chile
Hi,
I booked a car with Sixt from Temuco to Puerto Montt from 01/27/25 to 02/17/25.
On Saturday, I got an email canceling the reservation.
But the reservation is still showing up on the website (as of this morning at 9:30 AM).
Can’t reach Sixt Chile.
Sixt France is also in the dark (they can’t contact Chile either).
Has anyone heard anything about this?

Reliable operators around San Pedro de Atacama
Hi there,
Not wanting to go through a traditional travel agency—often based in France and only offering "items pulled from an internet catalog"—I’ve decided to plan this trip to Chile on my own this year, in March-April.
However, I’m overwhelmed by the number of options online.
I’ll be staying in San Pedro de Atacama for 4 nights. I’d love to explore San Pedro de Atacama and its surroundings.
Since I won’t have a vehicle, I’ll likely need to rely on group transfers. What do you recommend as must-see places and activities? And most importantly, which trustworthy providers should I turn to?

After a few treks in Nepal, I'm thinking about doing one in Patagonia.
But when I see the prices, it’s a bit off-putting!!!!
I was used to going with local agencies at really good rates and the same conditions as tour operators.

Alright, this year, we're heading back to South America!
The initial plan was to retrace the route we imagined in the summer of 2020: a trip to northern Argentina starting from Córdoba.
Unfortunately, the flight to Córdoba no longer exists, and airfares to Javier Milei’s country are both outrageously priced and involve multiple layovers.
So, I tweaked Google Flights every which way and finally found a flight within my budget—departing from Clermont-Ferrand!
Not to Argentina, though...
Our transatlantic flight will cross the snow-capped Andes, landing in Santiago, Chile, with a return from Lima!
In between, two domestic flights and a big road trip loop starting from the coastal city of Arica to explore the treasures of northern Chile.
Our mode of transport: a pseudo 4x4 that won’t take us through sand dunes or devilish tracks but will let us tackle the entire secondary network, including unpaved main roads, while still being insured.
Is the suitcase packed with all-season clothes?
Are the driver’s license and passport ready?
Bank cards and a few euros too?
Off we go for just over 3 weeks of southern wanderings!

What vehicle is best for driving in Chile's Lake District?
Hi,
I’m really surprised by the wide range of prices charged by car rental companies in Chile, so I’d like to know which type of vehicle is best suited for the roads in the Lake District: Puerto Montt and Ensenada, between Ensenada and Pucón, and between Pucón and Currarrehue, for example. I have the choice between 4x4s (expensive!), 4x2s (I don’t know what that is), SUVs (also expensive), and more classic vehicles.

Van itinerary on the Carretera Austral: feasibility and ferry reservations?

I’m planning a van trip along the Carretera Austral from February 9th to March 1st, 2025.
My main questions are about timing and the must-see spots.
Here’s what I’m thinking, but I’m not sure if it’s realistic (ferries, road conditions, weather, etc.).

Traveling with Iberia Airlines
Hi everyone,
I’m leaving this Saturday the 30th with Iberia, and they’re not responding to emails or picking up the phone 😐. So I’m trying here with my three questions:
1 - On the way there, I’d like to check a pack of water (Vittel 1.5L x6 bottles) in my hold luggage since it’s not allowed in the cabin. I’d like to know if this is allowed or if there are any restrictions in the hold as well (aside from the maximum weight of the luggage, of course)?
2 - I have a disability, and my health hasn’t been improving, so I’ve needed a cane to get around for a while now. At the airport, they’ll put me in a wheelchair with special assistance (I’m used to it). I’ve brought a folding cane for the trip—am I allowed to have it in my carry-on luggage? (It’s a basic walking cane that folds, no fancy handle that unscrews with a sword inside or anything like that). The wheelchair is great, but before the flight, I’d like to stretch my legs a bit .
(The question might seem silly, but I’ve had some weird surprises at airport security before—a glass knick-knack that confused them for a while, even though it was just a small glass rose under a dome, or another time, my empty hair spray bottle caused a lot of hesitation.)
3 - I never received an invoice for my Iberia flights (booked in February), and I’ll need it (since a small part might be reimbursed by my works council). I’ve checked my Iberia personal space, but there’s no invoice anywhere. Do you know how I can get it? (Given that they don’t respond to emails—or if they do, it’s off-topic—and they don’t answer the phone.)

5 days on Easter Island
Easter Island, located between Tahiti and Chile, fascinated me with its volcanic landscapes and legendary Moai statues, erected by the first Polynesian inhabitants to honor their ancestors. Mysterious and iconic, this isolated land intrigues with its history and the enigmas that researchers and explorers are still trying to unravel.
To help you prepare for your trip, here’s my five-day itinerary. I was able to explore major sites while leaving room for some free and adventurous moments. Here’s the program I followed:
Day 1: Discovering Hanga Roa and nearby moais
For my arrival, I started slowly by visiting the village of Hanga Roa. I took the time to stroll around, check out some local shops, and especially admire the first moais accessible for free, to ease into the island’s fascinating history.
Day 2: The must-see sites with a guide (Vaihu, Te Pito Kura, Anakena, Tongariki, Rano Raraku)
The second day was dedicated to the highlights. With a guide, I explored the island’s iconic sites, including the imposing aligned moais of Tongariki and the ancient "statue factory" of Rano Raraku. This intense day helped me understand more about the island’s culture and mysterious history, especially with the paradise-like beach of Anakena at the end of the day.
Day 3: Historical sites and museum (Orongo, Rano Kau, Puna Pau, Akivi)
On the third day, I continued with a guided morning, particularly at the ceremonial village of Orongo, perched atop Rano Kau. After visiting Puna Pau and Akivi, I spent the afternoon at the museum to deepen my knowledge of the Rapa Nui civilization.
Day 4: Bike ride in nature
Craving freedom, I devoted this day to a bike ride along the coastline and through the island’s natural spots. It was the perfect opportunity to explore at my own pace and stop at secret coves, enjoying the tranquility of the landscapes.
Day 5: Hike to the summit of Terevaka
For my last day, I set off on a hike to the summit of Terevaka, the island’s highest point. From there, the 360° view of the island and the ocean is breathtaking and gave me a memorable souvenir of this trip.
This five-day stay was a real journey through time, landscapes, and the mysteries of Easter Island!

The itinerary is set, accommodations are booked, and the 4x4 is reserved. We could still tweak things a bit, but it’s getting harder to find available lodging in some spots.
Here’s the planned route: - 1 night in Puerto Montt on arrival day - 2 nights in Castro (Chiloé Island) - 2 nights near Ensenada - 1 night in Horniporén - 1 night in Chaitén - 3 nights in Puyuhuapi - 2 nights in Coyhaique - 3 nights between Puerto Bertrand and Cochrane - 2 nights in Caleta Tortel - 3 nights in Puerto Guadal - 1 night in Chile Chico (to take the ferry across the lake) - 1 night in Villa Cerro Castillo before flying out from Balmaceda

We’re spending 3 nights between Puerto Bertrand and Cochrane. The idea is to **explore the vast Patagonia Park and its wildlife**. But I’m not sure where to start. Any recommendations for day hikes or itineraries? I read somewhere that you can do a day trip with a guide that includes a boat ride on Lake Cochrane, but I can’t find the booking info. Une bonne nouvelle pour les amants de la nature. Le président chilien vient d'annoncer deux nouveaux parcs nationaux au Chili.
Le premier, dans la région métropolitaine: Río Clarillo. (Pour être exact, il s'agissait déjà d'une réserve nationale. Elle change tout simplement de catégorie.)
Le deuxième, sur les hauts plateaux de la région administrative de Tarapacá, dans l'extrême nord du pays: Salar de Huasco. Il s'agit d'un endroit intéressant car il est inscrit à la Liste des zones humides d'importance internationale de la convention de Ramsar.

The National Tourism Service SERNATUR published a small graphic summary of the current situation in the tourism sector for each region of the country on August 14th.
It shows the percentage of operational tourist attractions, accommodations, airports, and bus stations across Chile’s sixteen regions.
You can check out the map by following this link: https://www.sernatur.cl/operatividad-y-recomendaciones-de-las-regiones-del-pais/
As you can see, in several regions, no tourist attractions are currently available. In two regions, only half are open.
(A quick but important note: the small village of San Pedro de Atacama is in the Antofagasta administrative region, not the Atacama region.)
The situation for accommodations, regional airports, and bus stations is relatively better.
Some good news, though—Torres del Paine National Park is expected to gradually reopen starting September 1st.

Paso Mayer et passage possible en 4x4 depuis l'Argentine vers le Chili?

Je crois encore en mon départ fin octobre pour 3 mois en Argentine et Chili avec mon propre véhicule. Je descends le long de ruta 40 en Argentine et remonte par le Chili.
Ma question est simple : Venant d'El Chalten je souhaite savoir si un passage Argentine/ Chili est possible par le Paso Mayer?
D'El Chalten je reviendrais vers la Ruta 40 jusqu'à Las Horquetas, puis la RP 35, l'estancia Alma Gaucha, puis l'estancia Entre Rios et le Paso Mayer si c'est possible.
Ensuite direction Villa O'Higgins par la X 905.

Road trip en van en Amérique du Sud au départ du Chili
Bonjour à tous je suis tout beau tout neuf sur le forum. "le tout beau c'est moi qui le dit" 🤣 avec ma conjointe est nos 2 chiens ce sont d'adorables Jack russel nous avons en projet en 2022 de faire un road trip en van en Amérique latine pendant 6 mois mini et 8 mois maxi j'aimerai partager avec d'autre personnes les obstacles re'contrle parcour les formalitées ect apparement pour l'achat d'un van obligation de commencer au Chili et de terminer au Chili pour acquérir et vendre la bête. Au point de vue du budget combien faut il prévoir la bas pour le van et pour la vie pendant les quelques mois ou nous resterons la bas.

On souhaite acheter un Van aménagé au Chili et le revendre au Chili. Durant notre voyage on aimerait passer par une majorité de pays canons que peut offrir l'Amérique Latine ! On a essayé d'établir un itinéraire en fonction des saisons par pays et on souhaite vous le soumettre.
- Janvier : Chili : Santiago : achat du van + on descend le long de la cote (Météo envisageable, chaud & sec) - Février : Patagonie + Argentine (Météo favorable) - Mars : Uruguay (Météo favorable) + Brésil (Rio: Météo envisageable + aller jusqu’à la ville de Salvador ? ) + Paraguay : (Météo favorable) - Avril : Bolivie (Météo favorable) - Pérou (Météo envisageable) - Mai : Pérou (Météo favorable) + Equateur --> juste y passer (Météo favorable) - Juin : Colombie (Météo favorable) - Juillet: Equateur + Pérou --> redescendre de l'autre coté ? (Météo Envisageable) + nord du Chili jusqu’à Santiago + revente du van (annonce 1 mois avant le départ sur groupes Facebook)
Qu'en pensez vous ? l'itinéraire est pas trop long ? la météo sera propice ? Autre fin de parcours, pouvons nous revenir au Chili en passant par le Nord soit le Venezuela et le Brésil ?

On souhaite acheter un Van aménagé au Chili et le revendre au Chili. Durant notre voyage on aimerait passer par une majorité de pays canons que peut offrir l'Amérique Latine ! On a essayé d'établir un itinéraire en fonction des saisons par pays et on souhaite vous le soumettre.
- Janvier : Chili : Santiago : achat du van + on descend le long de la cote (Météo envisageable, chaud & sec) - Février : Patagonie + Argentine (Météo favorable) - Mars : Uruguay (Météo favorable) + Brésil (Rio: Météo envisageable + aller jusqu’à la ville de Salvador ? ) + Paraguay : (Météo favorable) - Avril : Bolivie (Météo favorable) - Pérou (Météo envisageable) - Mai : Pérou (Météo favorable) + Equateur --> juste y passer (Météo favorable) - Juin : Colombie (Météo favorable) - Juillet: Equateur + Pérou --> redescendre de l'autre coté ? (Météo Envisageable) + nord du Chili jusqu’à Santiago + revente du van (annonce 1 mois avant le départ sur groupes Facebook)
Qu'en pensez vous ? l'itinéraire est pas trop long ? la météo sera propice ? Autre fin de parcours, pouvons nous revenir au Chili en passant par le Nord soit le Venezuela et le Brésil ?
On a pas encore de timing précis donc on est ouvert à tout ! Si vous avez des conseils pour préparer le voyage de nos rêves, n'hésitez pas ! 😎

Road trip de 35 jours à quatre copains en Amérique du Sud
Bonjour,
avec 4 copains nous avons réalisé un road trip en Amérique du sud, 5000km parcourus en bus à travers 3 pays : le Chili, la Bolivie et le Pérou, nous avons dépensé moins de 700€ en 35 jours tout inclue. Trois semaines au nord du Chili, est-ce trop?

Nous avons prévu pour 2021 un tour du monde et nous avons environ 3 semaines au chili (hors ile de Paques). Il y a l'air d'avoir énormement de choses à faire et à voir dans l'extreme nord, et en avril ce n'est pas forcément la bonne saison en patagonie.
Notre premier itinéraire ressemble à ça : - Santiago 2 jours - Valparaiso 3 jours - Arica 1 jours - Putre / Parc Lauca / Salar de Surir etc 2 jours - Route jusque Iquique avec Matilla et Pica 1 jour - Iquique 1 jour - San Pedro De Atacama 5 jours - Route jusque Antofogasta 1 jours - Caldera 1 jour - Laguna Santa rosa / Salar Maricunga ... 1-2 jours - 1 journée off quelque part - Puis retour sur Calama pour partir à Uyuni
Est ce trop pour cette région du Chili ? Il est difficile de faire des choix, Ile de Chiloé, Puertto Montt, La patagonie... sur un autre voyage ?
