Je fais au mois d'août le tour du SENEGAL. DAKAR-DAKAR avant sans doute m'y installer (inch'allah) le dernier repèrage en quelque sorte

Avez vous quelques bons plans pour la partie PODOR, MATAN, BAKEL, KEDOUGOU, TAMBACOUNDA, KOLDA ? Autrement dit sur le Nord et l'est: les lieux à ne pas rater, les bons camps, le meilleur moyen de circuler, etc etc...Sur le trajet sud et west je pense pouvoir m'en sortir seul ayant déjà bougé dans le coin.

Peut-on circuler en GAMBIE sans risque? Qu'y a t-il a voir ?

Je suis aux premières planifications de mon voyage et j'hésite entre quelques pays africains. Si quelques uns d'entre vous aviez des suggestions de pays intéressants, ça me serait très utile. Je cherche bien sûr un pays riche au plan musical, mais aussi un pays où le français est assez répandu...

I’m diving into planning a trip I’ve dreamed of for a long time: crossing Africa from North to South solo, with a departure planned for October 2025 for about 8-9 months. I’m leaving from Paris with a starting budget of around 7,000 €, aiming to supplement it with work along the way.

My planned route: Senegal → Gambia → Sierra Leone/Liberia (if logistics work out) → Côte d'Ivoire → Ghana → Togo → Benin → Cameroon → Gabon → Kenya (Masai Mara) → Uganda (Bwindi gorillas) → Rwanda → Tanzania (Kili + Serengeti + Zanzibar) → Mozambique → Malawi → Zambia (Victoria Falls) → Botswana → Namibia → South Africa (Cape Town). Madagascar as a bonus if timing/budget allows from Mozambique.

I’m not a backpacking newbie—I’ve done several trips in Europe and I’m familiar with the lifestyle, hostels, local transport, etc. But Africa is my first big adventure on this continent, and I’ve got some very concrete questions I’d love feedback on from people who’ve been there.

🎭 My big dilemma: flexibility vs. pre-organized work

What matters most to me is NOT rushing through. If I feel good somewhere, I’ll stay longer. If a region doesn’t click, I’ll cut it short. That seems totally incompatible with having pre-booked work or volunteer gigs, yet I need that income to stretch my budget.

I’m torn between two approaches:

Option A: The mixed rhythm: 3-4 weeks of volunteering in a country (free accommodation, full immersion), then 1-2 countries in classic backpacker "vacation" mode, then another mission somewhere, etc. This gives a breathing rhythm and avoids burnout from non-stop volunteering.

Option B: The continuous flow: finding gigs as I go, from the previous country, contacting hosts 2-3 weeks in advance with a flexible date range. Keeping maximum spontaneity but never arriving anywhere without a safety net.

Have you tried either? What actually works on the ground in Africa?

🌍 What I’m really looking for in this trip

Not just the classic tourist spots. I want to see the country as it is—eating at local joints, taking local transport (bush taxis, minibuses, sept-places), staying with locals when possible. The big reserves and safaris are part of the plan (Masai Mara, Serengeti, Okavango), but just as much as hanging out in a residential neighborhood in Dakar, understanding how people really live.

Volunteering or work interests me for that reason too (not just for free lodging, but because it’s the deepest way to dive into a country). Working at a school in Ghana, a lodge in Kenya, a permaculture farm in Mozambique—I see it as an immersion that classic tourism can’t offer.

🎒 My concrete questions

About Workaway and Worldpackers: I’ve read a lot but would love on-the-ground feedback, especially for West and East Africa. Are hosts really flexible with dates for long-term travelers? Do the advertised gigs match reality? Are there alternative platforms you’d recommend for Africa specifically (I’ve heard of Help Exchange, WWOOF Africa, local networks…)?

About "off-platform" jobs: Is it really doable to find informal work on the spot (bars, restaurants, lodges) without prior contacts? In which countries/cities is this most accessible for a French speaker without a local work permit?

About logistics between countries: For those who’ve done the West Coast (Senegal → Ghana → Benin), how did you cross borders? Direct buses or local shared taxis at each border? And for the jump from Central Africa → Kenya, is a flight mandatory, or are there feasible overland routes?

About Madagascar: I’m considering adding it from Mozambique (flight Maputo or Beira → Tana). Those who’ve done it backpacker-style on a tight budget—is 3-4 weeks doable, or is it too short to be worth it?

I’m open to all tips, experiences, warnings, and pleasant surprises. And if you’ve got trusted local contacts (Workaway hosts, associations, community lodges), I’m all ears!

My name is Gérard, I’m a 77-year-old retiree, and I have a charming young wife of 70 and a sweet little Biewer dog celebrating his first birthday. 🎂🎉

The three of us are planning to leave from Cannes in our motorhome and head to Dakar.

Personally, I know this route very well, having done it three times in a 4x4, the last trip being in 2016.

Regarding Western Sahara, I know it’s not particularly recommended to cross it right now, but I haven’t heard any bad news about it yet.

As for crossing the "no man’s land," I remember it being a very difficult track, impassable with a motorhome. I’ve heard that they’ve recently improved the track and that it might now be possible to cross those 4 km with a motorhome (?)

Actually, I’m reaching out to experienced travelers who could give me their thoughts on crossing at the end of 2025. 🙏

By the way, if other motorhome travelers have the same plan, maybe we could discuss it together? 🤝

As for Mauritania, I know it’s a long stretch of tarmac, and from what I remember—aside from the "Gare du Nord" stop to refuel and enjoy a good tea—you have to switch to "survival mode."

I'm considering doing a round trip of Africa, starting in Morocco, then following the west coast down to the south, and finally heading back up along the east coast.

However, I have some big questions about the route:

From what I've gathered after a lot of research, the road seems quite doable without a 4x4 as far as Senegal, or even Benin?

It's between Benin and Namibia that it would get really tough, and I'd either need a 4x4 or to ship my vehicle if I'm in a converted H2L2 van (not 4x4)?

Could someone clarify this for me?

Otherwise, it seems like Southern, Northern, and Eastern Africa are accessible without a 4x4?

As for the vehicle, if a 4x4 is essential, I'm torn between: Kangoo 4x4 Lada Niva 4x4 standard C15 C15 4x4 Renault Trafic 4x4 (H2L2, so still quite large) or a Subaru Libero 4x4

Or would it even be possible with a simple Twingo? ^

But is that enough, or do I absolutely need a 4x4 like a Toyota, Land Rover, or something similar?

Those are my current questions! If anyone has some answers, that would be amazing!

Hello fellow travelers, I've made the France-Benin trip several times via the Mali "Route de l'Espoir," and the last journey was pretty tense—2013, 🥵‍🔥 military convoys and all the chaos in Mali from the border to Bamako. 😅 So, I’m planning to take the route again but this time via Senegal and Côte d'Ivoire, with a good old J9 (the mayor’s vehicles I used to travel in… 😎. Though the Mercedes 308 wasn’t bad either). Has anyone done this recently? A friend of mine did it 4 years ago, but things can change pretty quickly. avant c était les avions pour les privilégiés, des zones entieres sans hôtels , des chambres et des lits datant du moyen âge et parfois d immenses difficultés pour se comprendre. une bonne partie du monde pour des aventuriers au dos solide et au sommeil facile

apres c est devenu l invasion touristique , les paysages défigurés , la mer souillée , les bourrins en bus et sur paquebots , le tourisme local avec les défauts occidentaux et pas leurs qualités. une bonne partie du monde a vous gâcher le paysage avec leurs minables selfies

Il y a pour tout une période optimale. Avant c est trop tôt, apres ca devient difficile. Ce n est pas Voyagesforum qui me contredira........

Je peut prendre des visa à l’avance pour certain pays dans un autre ? Le prix approximativement de visa pour entre dans ces pays ? Je compte pas trop visité ni faire du tourisme , juste rouler et me rendre chez moi au benin .

Bonjour Avec le confinement j'ai pris le temps de faire un gros tri dans mes photos. Beaucoup étaient des photos de plages qui m'ont rappelé de magnifiques souvenirs. Donc je me demandais qu'elles sont les 3 plages qui vous viennent à l'esprit quand vous y pensez et qui vous ont marqué d'une manière ou d'une autre.

Personnellement 3 me viennent à l'esprit car elles étaient calmes, pas aménagées, en pleine nature et quasiment personnes dessus.

1) plage barra velha sur l'île de Marajo au Brésil (en plus j'ai pu louer une petite cabane sur pilotis pendant 1 semaine sur cette plage)

2)Mission beach dans l'état du Queensland en Australie

3) La plage du parc de Cahuita au Costa rica

Bonjour, Je projette, pour le mois de mars 2020, un séjour au Sénégal. Dans mon projet de voyage j'envisage un passage par la Casamance. Toutefois je suis un peu refroidi par les informations diverses que l'on peut recueillir sur la persistance du conflit avec les autonomistes et l'existence de régions encore dangereuses par la présence de mines anti-personnelles. Que faut-il en penser? Dans quelle mesure y-a-t'il un risque pour les touristes, notamment les touristes français? Y-a-t'il des zones à éviter absolument? Merci d'avance Gilbert Robin
