We’ve already booked several campsites in national parks (Golden Gate / Mountain Zebra / Addo Elephant / Garden Route). We still need to reserve the stretch between De Hoop Nature Reserve and Cape Town. Any suggestions? We’d love to stay around Cape Town for 5 days to explore the wine route, the peninsula, and do some hikes in Table Mountain. Any camping recommendations? Or, on the contrary, places to avoid?

We’re starting from PERTH because our son has been living there since May of last year, and we’re taking the opportunity to visit him while doing this big East Coast tour.

Hi, We’re a young couple planning to travel to South Africa after spending about three weeks in Namibia. We’ll arrive in Cape Town around mid-December, with no fixed travel duration (though our budget will eventually set a limit). After browsing through the forum, we’ve realized the country is packed with incredible spots, which makes choosing an itinerary tough. We’re looking for stunning landscapes, hikes, and so on. So, we’d love to hear your thoughts and experiences. When we arrive in Cape Town, we’d like to settle in and take it easy until New Year’s, exploring at a relaxed pace. We know this period coincides with South African holidays—does that make finding accommodations (availability/prices) more difficult? Hello and happy New Year to everyone, A friend and I are interested in going to South Africa (or Kenya) for about two weeks (last quarter of 2026) but without renting a car. Generally, I don’t like organized trips for the entire duration of a trip, and what’s more, this destination is very expensive. So, I was wondering if it would be a good idea to spend, for example, a week in Cape Town independently and take day trips with a local agency, then do a week-long circuit for a safari in a park, which would leave a bit of freedom to book flights and maybe get advice from local agencies. Is this a good idea? Is it doable or not? What do you think? Have any travelers done this kind of trip? Thanks in advance for your feedback. Dominique

Hi, Back from South Africa since 24/10/25, we’re having trouble getting our deposit back after renting a car at Cape Town Airport with Pace Car Rental through Carwiz! It’s still a sum over 1000 €!! Lots of email exchanges via WhatsApp where they send me the refund proof dated 25/11, but my bank can’t find any trace of it!! Just to clarify, the car was returned without a scratch, as they confirmed! Has anyone else run into this issue with this rental company, or others for that matter? And if it’s a scam, what are the possible courses of action? I’m hoping there are some… I was thinking of contacting our Consulate in Cape Town to see if they can help with the next steps or even intervene with this rental company! Is the Mozambique route via Maputo a good option? What are the formalities for crossing into Mozambique? Is the Kosy Bay area worth a detour? We’ll be entering Kruger from the south for 4 days. Hello, I’ve got a little doubt about our arrival in Johannesburg and would love your advice. We’re landing at 2:20 PM with Rwandair from Kigali on Sunday, July 27th. We need to pick up our rental car and head toward the Drakensberg. I’ve booked accommodation about an hour from Johannesburg Airport in Heidelberg. It seemed doable to drive for an hour, but considering customs, baggage claim, picking up the car, potential traffic jams (?), and the early sunset at that time of year, I’m worried about driving at night. I came across a (really interesting) cruise on the Mein Schiff 4, and apparently, no French agencies sell Mein Schiff cruises. After several searches online, only Wondercruises and Seascanner work with them.

The advantage of Wondercruises is that they’re partners with "Flying Blue," and you can earn miles.

I love a good challenge, so why not try out this company—it seems pretty solid!

My partner and I are planning a 21-day self-drive trip from Victoria Falls to Cape Town, flying from Montreal to Victoria Falls and renting a 4x4. I’d love to hear members’ thoughts on our itinerary and its feasibility, along with your recommendations for must-see spots, essential parks, lodges, etc.

Our ideal is to start our stay at the falls and head south to South Africa, finishing in Cape Town by the sea for two days of relaxation before returning to Canada. We’re big on photography, not so much on cities, and we usually book accommodations where we can prepare our own dinner. Is this itinerary too ambitious? I’ve read a lot of travel journals and sometimes it seems very doable, other times completely the opposite...

We have a round-trip ticket from Paris to Johannesburg and are considering taking 2 domestic flights: one between Johannesburg and Cape Town and another between Cape Town and Durban. Do you know when it's best to book the tickets to get the best fares and which airline to choose? I'm currently finding tickets on Safair for 300 € for 4 between Johannesburg and Cape Town. Do you think it's better to focus on the northern part of the country, including Kruger, or is it worth visiting the Cape region as well (the kids dream of seeing whales!)? Hello, We’re a family from Réunion with three kids, used to active holidays: biking, camping, hitchhiking, and finding last-minute accommodations.

This time, we’d like to visit a country in Southern or East Africa (since it’s close to our island—flights to Johannesburg aren’t too expensive). The kids dream of seeing animals, but we don’t want to spend our whole holiday in a 4x4!

My husband and I know West Africa well (we’ve lived for months in Burkina, Benin, and Madagascar), where it’s easy to get around by public transport, get unexpectedly invited into villages, and find food in roadside eateries... But we’re not sure if we can find that same vibe in "safari" countries.

More specific criteria:

- See animals and varied landscapes, but without ending up with 25 4x4s around one elephant... - Not spend 5 hours a day in the car every day - Do some travel by public transport - A holiday focused not just on nature but also on taking time to meet locals - Be able to hike (or even bike, canoe...) - Camp for all or part of the trip

Given all this, which destination would you recommend? South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe? Or Kenya, Tanzania? Or somewhere else?

I’ve read tons of websites and forums but I’m still confused!

This would be for about 3 weeks next July-August.

Hello, I’m taking advantage of the forum reopening to ask this question:

For her 70th birthday, my mom will receive—as a gift—a trip to South Africa at the end of May 2025. We’ll arrive and depart (13 nights later) from JNB on Air France AF990/AF995. We’ll obviously rent a car for certain parts of the trip. I’ve been to the Cape Town area and as far as Agulhas twice, but she’s never been to South Africa before. She might enjoy a day or two of safari, but it’s not a priority for her. I’m well aware that trying to pack in too much is risky, which is why I’m looking for your advice on itineraries, safety, and health (status of the Marburg virus). So far, which combinations of these visits (in no particular order) would be doable and most enjoyable for her at a reasonable pace:

1-day excursion to Pilanesberg Park (+ Hartbeespoort on the way back if possible), self-drive or with a tour guide? 2 nights around the Panorama Route self-driving Garden Route from/to George/PLZ for 5 nights (what are the must-sees for a first-timer with so little time?) Wine region for 2 nights (is it worth doing both the Stellenbosch bus tour and the Franschhoek Wine Tram the next day, or vice versa)—she loves good wine! Cape Town for 2 nights (is it worth stopping at the Cape of Good Hope if—only if—you’ve maybe already been to Agulhas?).

This would give a final itinerary like this:

Day 1: Morning arrival in JNB—rest day/to be defined Day 2: Guided game drive excursion to Pilanesberg Park Day 3: Flight JNB–Port Elizabeth, pick up rental car, drive to Tsitsikamma Day 4–6: Garden Route: activities to be defined Day 7: Transfer to Franschhoek: Wine Tram in the afternoon Day 8: Taxi to Stellenbosch for the Vine Hopper bus tour Day 9–11: Transfer to Cape Town: activities to be defined Day 12: Flight from Cape Town to Hoedspruit or Nelspruit Day 13: Visit the Panorama Route Day 14: Flight from Hoedspruit or Nelspruit to JNB, then evening flight back to France

Given the time spent on the Garden Route, what are the must-sees? Same question for the Panorama Route? In general, she prefers beautiful walks with incredible landscapes/views and cultural visits over big cats, but it would be a shame not to see some local wildlife like meerkats, whales (I doubt it in May), or penguins during her stay! Je pense avoir finaliser mon parcours 2021 et j'aimerai votre avis dessus.

Actuellement, départ le 06/10/2021 avec un retour au 30/10/2021 (Atterrissage le 31). On a essayé de caler un départ le plus tôt possible en Octobre et on ne peut faire mieux que ces dates. J'ai déjà 4 nuits réservées à Yellowstone sur les dates prévues. Pour le reste, rien n'est figé. Voyageant avec des enfants en bas âge, certaines étapes ont étés réduites en terme de kilomètres.

J1 (06/10) : Arrivée à Minneapolis à 13H - Nuit à Mankato. L'idée est d'avoir les vols sans escales et nous avons donc fait le choix de ne pas passer par Denver. Mankato n'est pas très loin de Minneapolis et cela permet de gagner 1H de route sur le lendemain.

Pouvons nous échanger sur les modalités de ce voyage, Je souhaiterai éviter certains pièges, n'ayant pas trop l'habitude de ce genre de gros voyage. Aujourd'hui, nous avons réservé uniquement les vols aller retour pour 2 personnes. Bonjour à tous. Tous les étés on part avec la famille dans des zones isolées du monde pour randonner et faire de magnifiques bivouacs solitaires mais cette année, changement de programme Covid oblige. Je cherche donc un plan B en Europe (accessible, la Norvège semble encore inaccessible) ou en France. Je connais un peu les Alpes et les Pyrénées en automne mais pas du tout en été (surtout concernant la fréquentation). C'est la que je sollicite votre expérience. Je cherche 2-3 randos d'une durée assez longue (de 5 à 20 jours) ou nous pourrions faire des bivouacs isolés dans de magnifiques paysages sans être sur des autoroutes de rando. Plus c'est isolé, mieux c'est. On peut gérer une bonne semaine d'autonomie de nourriture avec nous.

J'avais pensé à la fausse haute route de Zermatt Arolla (?) GR 20 (trop de monde). Tour du mont Blanc (trop de monde)

Si vous connaissez des randos avec supers panoramas, pas trop touristiques en France ou en Europe, je suis preneur.

Depuis plus de 20 jours, le Norwegian Spirit, tout beau après sa remise en état aux chantiers de Marseille , erre dans les mers asiatiques. N'ayant pas été accepté dans les ports d'Asie du sud est, il est arrivé à la Réunion avec zéro contaminé à bord, mais n'a pu accoster et continue donc vers Capetown. C'est l'endroit le plus sur de la planète, où les passagers sont confinés de puis plus de 15 jours sans contamination.🙂 J'espère pour les passagers que le chef cuisinier est bon😉
