Hi there. We’ll be in South Africa at the end of February ’26 with a rental car—not a 4x4. What’s the best route between Kosy Bay and the southern part of Kruger Park? Is the Mozambique route via Maputo a good option? What are the formalities for crossing into Mozambique? Is the Kosy Bay area worth a detour? We’ll be entering Kruger from the south for 4 days. Hello everyone, My husband and I are planning our honeymoon in Tanzania, hoping to go on a safari and spend a few days in Zanzibar, or even on Mafia Island. We’d like to work with a local agency, both for financial reasons and because we usually travel backpacker-style, adapting activities as we go. Apparently, for safaris, it’s better to plan a bit ahead. We’re thinking of going in September–October 2026. My mother has health issues that could worsen, so I’d like to have a backup plan in case I need to cancel at the last minute. Hello, We’re a group of four seventy-something retirees and we’re planning a 4-week trip to South Africa. We’re seasoned "adventurers" used to multi-week stays (we’ve been to India seven times, Mexico, Thailand, Laos, Myanmar, Australia, etc.).

For South Africa, we’re thinking of covering most of the trip in a private vehicle and taking flights for inter-state transfers. We’re interested in meeting people, learning about the country’s evolution, exploring major cities, visiting traditional villages, and seeing wildlife.

For us, at the start of 2025, Le CANTAL was a true “Terra Incognita”!!

After seeing some tempting TV reports, we decided to fill this gap—especially in terms of landscapes. On the same trip, we’ll also head to the Arcachon Basin, the International Seaplane Gathering in Biscarrosse, and my native Landes region...

So, on May 20th, we left Marseille in the rain and thunder, heading toward Nîmes, Saint-Hippolyte, Mont Aigoual, Florac, and stopping in Marvejols to give my arthritic back a break for the night.





The next morning, we decided to revisit the Parc aux Loups du Gévaudan (Europe’s largest wolf park). As someone used to photo safaris in the wilds of East Africa, I’m not a fan of zoos at all—but I *do* have a deep admiration for wolves!!



Since it’s pretty unlikely I’ll ever see one in the wild, I’ll settle for this Parc aux Loups in Marvejols. This will be our third visit to this incredible gathering of these fascinating canines.

My wife and I are heading to Kenya for three weeks starting August 30th, and I’d love some help fine-tuning our itinerary and answering a few questions. Here’s the rough draft I’ve put together:

08/30: Nairobi (2 nights) 09/01-09/04: Masai Mara (3 nights, then return to Nairobi) 09/05-09/07: Rift Valley/Nakuru/Hell’s Gate/etc. (2 nights, then return to Nairobi) 09/08: Nairobi > Amboseli (2 nights) 09/10: Amboseli > Tsavo East (2 nights) 09/12: Tsavo > Mombasa (1 night) 09/13: Mombasa > Kilifi (2 nights) 09/15: Kilifi > Malindi > Lamu (3 nights) 09/18: Return to Nairobi 09/19: Departure at 23:40

I’ve got a ton of questions, but I’ll try to summarize them somewhat:

Do you have any recommendations for tour operators for the safaris? Right now, I’ve planned 11 days for the "safari" portion from Masai Mara to Tsavo, with a lot of returns to Nairobi—is it possible to optimize this without booking a full tour with a single agency? Aside from the cost, I’m worried I won’t feel very free if we do a 9-day experience covering all of it, but maybe that’s the most recommended option? Do all the destinations up to Mombasa require booking a tour and hiring a guide in advance (or having your own vehicle), or are some more open to improvisation? We’d also like to meet people and not just do safaris, but our current itinerary doesn’t really allow for that—would you recommend cutting back on safaris and visiting villages between Nairobi and the coast instead? We were also considering the Taita Hills if possible—what do you think? Is Kilifi a good idea? We’ve heard it’s more authentic than Diani and we’re interested in the bioluminescent plankton, but I feel like the detour complicates the trip a bit.

You can probably tell from my questions that our biggest concern right now is booking the safaris. We can’t really afford to spend 2000 € each for 4 days, but we also won’t be taking a trip like this again anytime soon, so we want to make the most of it!

My exchange with Julie was great—she took the time to talk with me for an hour on the phone to offer a tailor-made safari.

However, she’s asking me to pay 50% of the trip, or even the full amount. She mentioned paying fewer fees by using Wise.

Do you know this agency? What do you think? I’m really afraid it might be a scam and that my dream could turn into a nightmare.

Hello, I went on a safari from Arusha 20 years ago organized by a local agency called Sirocco, I think. It was fabulous (8 tourists, 2 4x4 vehicles, 1 driver, 1 guide, and a cook). I’d love to find those same safari conditions again (immersion in simple conditions within the Serengeti, notably), but I’m struggling to find that kind of offer (lodges, tent camps, etc.). Once again, I’m back looking for advice

So, here’s the thing: in September, I’m planning a trip to Africa. There’ll be four of us—my husband, my 24-year-old daughter, my 20-year-old son, and me.

I’ve had this idea in my head for a while, but now it’s starting to feel real. The tricky part is that I’m on team "I organize my trip without an agency and handle things on the spot." But here’s the catch—my husband, who’s usually up for anything, doesn’t want to hear about a do-it-yourself trip. From what I’ve gathered, only Namibia allows that if I’m not mistaken. But if it’s possible in Tanzania (or maybe Kenya), I think I could convince him.

Anyway, here’s my first double question—more will probably follow! Can you travel without an agency in Tanzania? If not, which agency would you recommend, given that I live in Belgium?

En février 2020, j'ai acheté des billets d'avion (2 personnes) pour un séjour en Tanzanie du 31 octobre au 11 novembre 2020. J'ai également contacté Juma Sumbi qui m'a établi un devis qui nous convenait. En raison du Covid 19, je n'ai pas envoyé d'acompte à Juma mais je lui ai dit que ce devis me convenait. Le vol pour Kilimandjaro (Air France départ de Paris) a été remplacé par un vol Lyon Amsterdam Kilimandjar de KLM. Retour inchangé.

J'ai recontacté Juma il y a 2 semaines par mail pour savoir s'il pourrait assuré sa prestation. nJe n'ai, à ce jour, pas eu de réponse. J'ai essayé de l'appeler par What'app, sans succès, numéro non reconnu puis appel direct. Cette fois j'ai eu un message en anglais disant de réessayer car numéro indisponible pour l'instant.

Je pense que, malheureusement, Juma a fait les frais de la situation due au Covid.

Je cherhce donc à savoir s'il est envisageable de faire ce séjour, si des voyageurs se rendent en Tanzanie actuellement et des coordonnées de guides francophones travaillant comme Juma Sumbi.

Mon conjoint et moi avons effectué en novembre dernier notre premier périple en Afrique, en Namibie. Un merveilleux voyage de plus de 3 semaines qui aujourd’hui encore me laisse rêveuse et un peu dépitée à l’idée que je ne retrouverai probablement jamais un voyage similaire procurant un tel sentiment de liberté et de bonheur, avec des paysages de dingue et des safaris en prime. Lors de ce voyage mon conjoint m’a demandée en mariage, je suis donc en pleine prospection pour l’organisation du voyage de noces! 😎

Nous aimerions dans l’idéal part fin mai / début juin 2021 (sachant que ce n’est pas figé), pour une durée de 2 semaines en Afrique Australe. Nous rejoindront ensuite les plages - sûrement Maurice ou Seychelles - pour une dernière semaine). L’idée serait de louer un 4x4 (sûrement avec tente sur le toit).

J’ai pensé à un itinéraire démarrant au Kgalagadi (j’étais déçue de ne pas l’avoir inclus dans notre voyage en Namibie) et terminant aux Victoria falls, en passant par le Delta de l’Okavango et Chobe sur environ 2 semaines. Je n’ai pas encore bien peaufiné l’itinéraire, l’idée serait surtout dans un premier temps d’avoir vos retours sur la faisabilité d’un tel parcours en 2 semaines. L’autre option serait de suivre un itinéraire du Cap à Kgalagadi.

Les deux itinéraires vous semblent-ils faisables sur 2 semaines? Y en a-t-il un à privilégier? Je trouve peu de récits concernant le premier parcours de Kgalagadi aux chutes, peut-être que ce n’est pas la meilleure option?

En ces temps de confinement, je me permet de rêver à de futurs voyages. Pensez-vous qu'il est faisable d'atterrir au Cap et de faire le circuit en transports en commun jusqu'à Nairobi en deux mois? Est-ce que cela risque d'être trop juste et de ne pas avoir le temps de profiter des paysages? Nous partirons à deux et l'idée est de faire quelques safaris, les chutes et un peu de repos.

Bonjour, Nous avions prévu un séjour au Botswana en novembre prochain. Tout est réservé y compris les billets d'avion et la réservation des sièges. J'ai versé un acompte au guide pour ses services, la réservation des emplacements dans les parcs, les entrées ... Budgetair vient de me prévenir que la compagnie LUFTHANSA vient d'annuler les vols A/R et qu'ils procéderont plus tard au remboursement des billets. Seul reste maintenu le vol Johannesburg/Maun (le vol retour Kasane/Johannesbourg est annulé aussi. J'attends maintenant de notre guide qu'il me dise si nous devons tout annuler ou s'il faut attendre. D'ici novembre on peut espérer que l'épidémie sera terminée en Europe mais qu'en sera-t-il en Afrique? Je ne sais pas si je dois faire ouvrir un dossier d'annulation dés maintenant chez ALLIANZ où j'ai pris une assurance voyage. C'est stressant. Je suis doublement déçu car après un magnifique voyage organisé par Africa coeur safaris (2 français) en 2017, j'ai déjà du annuler le voyage prévu en 2018 pour cause de maladie. Je recommande cette agence qui nous a proposé le circuit idéal pour découvrir le Botswana depuis le delta de l'Okavongo jusqu'aux chutes Victoria au Zimbabwe.

Nous désirons faire un safari de 7 jours en Tanzanie (2 personnes) , en 4/4 et à pieds. Pour l'instant, nous sommes sidérés des tarifs obtenus dans nos demandes de devis (3000 euros au min. par personne, uniquement pour le safari).😕 Nous souhaitons un guide francophone et des logements en camps de toile ou lodges. Here’s the story of our two-week trip—13 nights, actually—in the national parks of northern and southeastern Kenya, which we took last September at the end of summer. My wife and I planned this trip with a French agency (Bel Africa, Paris), which worked with a local operator in Nairobi (Nadhy Travels & Tours). The latter provided a driver-guide and vouchers, but no aperitif🙁! Our all-inclusive package included animal safaris exclusively in a customized 4x4 vehicle (with a pop-up roof) and accommodations in high-quality lodges that we selected ourselves. It’s great for comfort, but not so much for the wallet. The cost was obviously astronomical for the services provided. But that’s just my usual take on lodging in East and Southern Africa! Our itinerary was a loop starting and ending in Nairobi, passing through Ol Pejeta, Buffalo Springs-Samburu, Meru NP, Amboseli, and Tsavo West.

Trip breakdown:

Day 1 to 3: Ol Pejeta Day 3 to 7: Buffalo Springs Day 7 to 8: Meru NP-Nairobi Day 9 to 11: Nairobi-Amboseli Day 11 to 14: Tsavo West

Photo gear we brought:

- 1 bridge camera - 2 DSLR bodies - 2 telephoto lenses: 70-200mm f/2.8 and 200-500mm f/5.6 - 2 pairs of 10x42 binoculars

What motivated this trip? We wanted to recharge and were looking for a certain tranquility that would be ideal for wildlife observation and photography—our hobbies. That immediately ruled out the parks in the southwest, which are too crowded. Plus, those would have likely been a repeat of what we experienced in Tanzania a few years earlier (see my travel journal "The Great Migration"). Buffalo Springs particularly appealed to us because of the unique animal species it’s home to. It was really their existence that drove our choices. We wanted to see animals we’d never seen before in their natural habitats.

So, on a beautiful late-summer evening, we took off from Paris-CDG for Nairobi. The overnight flight was uneventful, and we landed early in the morning at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO). But our driver-guide wasn’t waiting for us. Judging by the number of signs being held up, we must have been the only travelers in that situation. Good grief, why wasn’t he there like all the others?

Nous aimons vivre au plus près de la population, partager leurs coutumes, visiter leurs structures scolaires, découvrir des villages typiques et même partager leur vie, voir les marchés, leur artisanat, fuyons les endroits trop touristiques, et pas trop fans de safaris mais grands marcheurs. Et nous aimons prendre notre temps.

QUE NOUS CONSEILLEZ VOUS ? réserver les 2 premiers jours hôtels puis recherche ensuite sur place en fonction du parcours? CONNAISSEZ VOUS DES GUESTS HOUSES SYMPATHIQUES, des "huts eco-friendly" ou des petits hôtel simples mais propres?

It’s been almost six months since we returned from our 15-day trip to Botswana, ending in front of the majestic Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe.

Our itinerary: 1 night at Maun Lodge in Maun 3 nights in the Central Kalahari at Deception Valley Lodge 1 night at Maun Lodge in Maun 3 nights in the Okavango Delta at Sango Safari Camp 3 nights in Chobe National Park at Chobe Safari Lodge 2 nights at Victoria Falls at A’Zambezi River Lodge

We were on a tight budget, so we opted to rent a vehicle for the Central Kalahari and the Okavango Delta.

The lodges are expensive but all-inclusive—meals, drinks (alcohol included), laundry, and the usual two daily safaris. In short, everything.

The lodges mentioned above offer a very high-end experience, with a guide and a 4x4 for each tent. We shared a 4x4 once at Sango Safari with an English couple.

Another little tip: I’d avoid staying at Chobe Riverfront like we did. It’s extremely touristy and overpriced. I think we should’ve spent one night there for the cruise and two other nights at a lodge deeper in Chobe National Park.

We arrived in Maun after an endless flight: Paris-Frankfurt-Johannesburg-Maun. We headed to the car rental agency to pick up our 4x4, and what a surprise to learn they’d canceled our booking—no vehicle! After 6 hours of waiting, we finally received our 4x4 at our hotel, fell asleep peacefully, and were ready to head to our first destination: the Central Kalahari!

Nous sommes partis avec nos 2 choupettes (bientôt 2 ans pour l’une et 6 mois pour l’autre). On a fait l’impasse sur le parc Kruger car on voulait éviter le palu.

Sur l’itinéraire : Parfait. Chaque étape nous a permis de trouver des activités pour la plus grande. Logements adaptés à la famille et bien situés. A Cape Town : tour de la Péninsule (merci à Échappée Australe pour l’itinéraire), Table Mountain, Manchots. Nous avons zappé Robben Island et les musées par rapport aux enfants. Stellenbosch : promenade en ville (magnifique) et restaurant dans les vignobles Hermanus : baleines et promenade Oudtshoorn : Autruches. Wilderness : Repos et plage (mais pas baignade car eau trop froide en Septembre) Plettenberg : Sanctuaires (singes, oiseaux, prédateurs) recommandés par l’agence de voyages Port Elizabeth : Manchots (on ne s’en lasse pas) et safaris

Sur Échappée Australe : Échanges productifs. Joignables facilement. A l’écoute. Très bon conseils pour les activités et les restaurants. Carnet de voyage précis et bonnes adresses. Choix des logements parfaits. Il y a de nombreux logements dans chaque ville. Nous avons rencontré quelques Français qui étaient mal tombés niveau logements (je n’ai pas demandé avec quelle agence ils sont partis). Nous c’était génial ! Voiture ok avec siège bébé et enfant (on a opté pour un SUV, plus cher mais plus spacieux).

L’Afrique du Sud est un pays magnifique. Nous y retournerons quand les choupettes seront plus grande pour faire les safaris. Vous pouvez y aller avec vos enfants. Échappée Australe nous avait rassuré sur le sujet : le pays possède des infrastructures très bonnes et des pharmacies dans toutes les villes. Nous n’avons pas eu de problèmes donc pas testé mais il y a des hôpitaux privés au besoin (prévoir une assurance). Eau et nourriture ne posent pas de problèmes non plus.
