Hello, I need some advice because I can't decide on an itinerary. We're going to join our son around September 20th, who's spending a year in Canada on a working holiday visa. I did the classic Quebec loop over 30 years ago, so I’m ruling out the Saguenay Fjord and Lac Saint-Jean right away. Here are the stops (overnights) I’ve tentatively planned:

D1-2-3: Quebec City D4: Malbaie Gorges National Park via Routes 360 and 362 D5: Malbaie Gorges National Park (fishing and canoeing) D6: Tadoussac (walks and whale watching from the shore, hiking up to Cap du Bon Désir) D7: Whale-watching zodiac excursion – ferry – Bic National Park D8: Bic National Park D9: Carleton-sur-Mer via the Matapedia Valley D10: Percé D11: Percé (Bonaventure Island excursion) D12: Forillon National Park D13: Forillon National Park D14: Sainte-Anne-des-Monts via Route 132 D15: Sainte-Anne-des-Monts (Gaspésie National Park) D16: Kamouraska D17: Quebec City D18-19-20: Montreal

I feel like one night in Tadoussac is too short. Wouldn’t it be better to add another night there and only spend one night in Sainte-Anne-des-Monts, skipping Gaspésie National Park? Just to clarify, we love nature and hiking but limit ourselves to about 10 km per day.

Also, I’m wondering about the distances (even though I tried to keep them reasonable), the short stops (max 2 nights except in Quebec City and Montreal, so not much time to settle in), and the weather in Gaspésie in late September-October (my husband doesn’t handle the cold well). Maybe it’d be better to only go as far as Bic National Park, then head back, and add more nights at Malbaie Gorges National Park (I didn’t stay in a park on my first trip, and my son, who got his fishing license, would be proud to bring us dinner 😊), Tadoussac, and maybe around Bic/Rimouski?

One last detail: the plan is to land in Quebec City, rent a car on D4, return it on D17, and take the train or bus to Montreal the next day, where we’ll catch our flight 4 days later. This is to cut down on rental costs and avoid having a car in Quebec City.

In MIKUMI and SELOUS, Southern Tanzania (June 2024)

Hi everyone,

I’m a newbie to this forum, passionate about wildlife, the landscapes of East Africa, and Tanzania in particular. This June 2024 trip/safari is our 7th visit to Tanzania and our 5th in the south, which has drawn us more than the north ever since we discovered it in 2015.

In 2024, the entrance fees for the reserves and services have gone up again since our last visit. I chose to return first to Mikumi Reserve, which was the very first one we visited in the south. Then, we’ll head to Selous (J. Nyerere N. P.) as usual. Initially, we wanted to spend 2/3 days on Mafia Island at the end of the trip, but it made the total cost too high, so we gave up... We usually go to Ruaha and Selous, but I wanted to mix it up a bit—also to save some money...

As for the timing, June is a new experience for us. I thought it might be interesting to come just after the lodges reopen... hoping for some great wildlife encounters??

The trip starts in Marseille with our first flight on Ethiopian Airlines to Addis Ababa, then continues to Dar es Salaam, where we’ll finally set foot on Tanzanian soil again.

After arriving in Dar, we spent one night at a hotel near the airport. The next morning, we headed to the domestic flights terminal, which hasn’t changed in years.

By mid-morning, we boarded a Cessna 208B Caravan with Safari Air Link, heading to the Kikoboga bush airstrip in Mikumi, which we reached 45 minutes later. Fun fact: the pilot was the same one as on our return flight two years ago.

I was surprised to see so many aircraft parked there... even twin-engine Embraer Brasilias?? As a fan of vintage planes, I loved it...

On the other hand, the light was incredibly harsh.....!! Our guides only speak English. We knew that in advance. In the south, it’s very rare to find someone who speaks French. This’ll force us to dig into our high school English memories... from 60 years ago... at least.

It’s noon, and we head toward the lodge. Near the airstrip, next to the Mikumi rangers’ base, there are quite a few herbivores. They find a bit more peace here—the big cats don’t venture this way...

Our first encounter was a group of Masai giraffes.

Rarer (for us), a savanna monitor lizard basking in the sun right in the middle of the track...??

A large gathering of impalas (mostly males) along with a few blue wildebeest:

Also unusual: a African crowned hornbill taking a dust bath in the middle of the track...!!

When it comes to identifying mammals or birds, I don’t know everything... so I might make mistakes. Please forgive me. I’m counting on my friend Blesl’s active participation... 😉

Trip to Madagascar in 2026: Nosy Be or Île Sainte-Marie?

Hi everyone, I’m planning a third trip to Madagascar in 2026. This time, heading north and then part of the west coast before going back up. The question I’m asking myself—same as during our first visits—is Nosy Be or not? Of course, the photos show stunning beaches, and when you mention Madagascar, almost everyone says Nosy Be or at least has heard of it. That’s actually why we didn’t include it in our itineraries before, especially since we’d already seen paradise-like beaches in the south, and we had them all to ourselves because they were hard to reach. On the other hand, I’ve always been drawn to Île Sainte-Marie, but from the north, you have to go back down to Tana, which I’m okay with in principle. So, what’s your take? Nosy Be and its surroundings—what do you think? Just tourists looking to party? Thanks

Payment Issue with Saudi Airlines

Hi there, I’m facing a rather unusual issue with SAUDI AIRLINES. I booked a flight to Jakarta with a layover in Jeddah for July directly on their website on February 25th, paying for our three tickets via PAYPAL. I quickly received confirmation that my flight was booked and our e-tickets were issued. However, after several days, I noticed we were never charged for the tickets, and I saw on our PayPal account that the payment authorization was still pending.

At first, I chalked it up to cross-border or banking delays… but since I use PayPal often and the debit from my bank account is usually almost immediate, I called PayPal. They told me that neither they nor I had anything more to do: when a transaction is paid using their solution, the payment is systematically validated by the seller before the transaction (an automated process, I imagine). However, PayPal confirmed that SAUDI hadn’t done this and that they had a month to do so, otherwise the transaction would be canceled by PAYPAL and SAUDI wouldn’t receive the funds. There must have been a technical glitch because normally, I shouldn’t have received the tickets until they had received the payment.

Given the reviews I’ve read about their customer service, I’m worried they might cancel our tickets without notice once they realize their mistake—or that they’ll ask us to pay the amount at that point (since the closer we get to the date, the higher the price goes).

So, I’ve been trying to contact them nonstop via their app (I’ve submitted about 10 tickets), I’ve called them, messaged them on Messenger and Instagram, and so far, I haven’t gotten any response. Either they don’t read my message to the end and just reply that the flight is confirmed + resend the tickets, or more recently, they tell me the issue is being handled by another department. We tried calling them again on Saturday, but no luck—the French-speaking agents were always busy. On Messenger, they keep asking for the secret code sent by SMS at the start of the conversation, but of course, I never receive anything even though my number is correctly registered in my SAUDI account.

I don’t know what else to do, and I’m not sure if I’m right to worry they might cancel our tickets.

I’m afraid this could jeopardize our dream trip, for which I’ve already booked hotels and activities… and we were really looking forward to it.

I hope you can shed some light on this?

When it comes to choosing your next trip, what tips the scales in favor of Eritrea over Ibiza?

Why pick Canada over French Polynesia?

The price? A magazine or TV report, a travel journal, an Instagram ad? Ease of travel? Minimal time difference? The country that has the most in common with all the trip participants? Activities? Relaxation? The desire to push your limits?

A photo?

What else, I wonder...

Personally, I often prioritize simple destinations (no administrative hassles), where I’m not at risk (nothing extraordinary like getting kidnapped by Daesh or ending up in a jail cell because the current geopolitics aren’t favorable to my passport, etc.), and where I can drive.

Wide-open natural spaces are more my thing than urban anthills.

Finally, I try not to spend three days on a plane to reach my destination, and I aim for a maximum budget of 3500 € (for 3 weeks) in comfortable conditions—that means charming hotels, good meals, etc.

This catchy and somewhat mysterious title comes from several questions I’ve been asking myself.

VF has been back open for a reasonable number of weeks and months now. The number of visitors overall matches past averages, but the number of members online in the last 24 hours seems relatively lower than what we used to see.

Yet, to my surprise, I’m seeing fewer travel journals, way fewer messages, and way fewer questions. I don’t see many new registered users online, and I notice a number of members who are logged in but either aren’t participating or have stopped participating.

Something’s not adding up for me because, in my opinion, VF is still appealing, and I don’t see which other sites could really compete.

Was there a real break between pre- and post-Covid? Does it just take more time for some people to discover the site or learn that it’s active again? Do people now prefer quick consumption on sites like FB or others I’m not familiar with? Where have the site’s old-timers gone, and what are they doing with their time now? What’s really going on here?

A month in Cambodia in November 2024

Here we go!!! I left home at 4 AM on October 31st and headed to Barcelona. Driving through Barcelona on the ring road stresses me out a bit, but at 6 AM the traffic is smooth, and I arrive at the airport without any issues. I call the valet, who quickly comes to pick up my car. He takes photos of it from all angles before letting me go.

Baggage check-in hasn’t started yet, and there are already several of us waiting.

Once free, everything happens very quickly. The flight to Abu Dhabi is on time and goes smoothly. I’ve never had any problems with this airline, which I’ve been using for several years.

The flight to Bangkok arrives at 7 AM as scheduled. This is my first time in Thailand and Bangkok. I’m used to traveling in India, and I notice that everything here is well organized—the customs process is quick, and the luggage is already on the carousel.

I booked a taxi on Booking. All I have to do is find the right exit and door based on the agency’s instructions. A large sign with the names of people who booked is posted on a wall. A hostess greets me and calls the taxi, which arrives 5 minutes later. I booked one night at the Lost Inn BKK hotel in the Phra Nakhon district, and we arrive at 9 AM. The welcome isn’t warm, and I have to wait until noon, sitting on a chair, before I can check into my room. I’m exhausted, and sleeping sitting up isn’t ideal. Noon finally arrives—the room is small but clean, which is fine for one night. I quickly take a shower to wake up because I plan to spend the afternoon visiting the Grand Palace. First, I need to exchange some money, and the banks are all close together on the same street, which is very convenient. When I enter one, a hostess gives me a ticket and invites me to sit down. There are about twenty counters, and I wait quietly until my number is called. The exchange is quick, so I can head out to find the Royal Palace. It’s actually very easy, and the walk is pleasant.

It’s magnificent and grand, and there are quite a few of us visiting. The sky is gray, it’s very humid, and a shower interrupts the visit. It’s a vast complex of temples and palaces. The buildings are colorful and sparkling, with a great sense of serenity (without the tourists, of course). I quietly enjoy the place and try to take photos without tourists, which isn’t easy.

Very close to the Grand Palace is Wat Pho, one of the oldest Buddhist temples in the capital.

It’s very famous for its 46-meter-long reclining Buddha statue.

Walking around the temple, you can see different representations of Buddha, all covered in gold leaf.

Inside the temple, on one side, monks recite their prayers, while the other side is reserved for tourists who come to meditate in silence.

Before returning to the hotel, I have dinner at an Indian restaurant. I go to bed early because tomorrow’s wake-up call will be very early again.

Saturday, November 2nd Wake-up at 4 AM, departure from the hotel at 4:30 AM. The taxi I booked via Booking is waiting for me and takes me to the airport. The trip is fairly quick—he takes small roads, and at this hour, there’s no traffic.

The flight to Phnom Penh is on time. Before boarding, I realize I left my fleece jacket on the carousel, but it’s too late to go back for it.

The flight goes well, and customs is quick.

At the exit, I take a tuk-tuk to Julieka’s GH near the museum. The welcome is friendly. I won’t be able to check into my room until noon, so I take the opportunity to exchange some euros on the market street. The street is lined with restaurants, and I’ll have my first meal there.

The museum is right across the street, so I don’t waste any time visiting it.

The representations of Hindu deities are very different from those in India, and I don’t recognize them. Many beautiful Buddhas are on display.

The museum is very pleasant, and there aren’t too many people, which is a plus.

At the exit, I return to the GH, settle into my room—which is decent and clean.

The Royal Palace is 1 km away. I walk along a garden, and at the end of the street is the Tonlé Sap, but I turn right. I arrive at a large esplanade and see the buildings with tiered roofs and glazed tiles. The entrance to the palace is a little further away.

At the entrance, I notice there isn’t the same crowd as at the one in BKK.

Khmer architecture is magnificent. The complex consists of gardens, palaces, pagodas with golden roofs, and slender spires.

The Silver Pagoda houses the small Emerald Buddha, which is actually made of jade. The silver flooring is covered with carpets. Photos are not allowed.

The walls surrounding the pagoda are covered with frescoes depicting scenes from the Ramayana.

Lately, when I check Skyscanner (sorted by price low to high 😛), I don’t see Gulf airlines at the top of the list anymore. Instead, Air India dominates (I flew with them a few years ago, and my experience was pretty mixed). After that, there’s Royal Jordanian… and the first Gulf Air, Etihad, and others only show up at 7XX € or more (with endless layovers). What’s going on with these airlines? Did they change their target market? I really like these routes for Southeast Asia trips because they give you a perfect midway break.

Don’t they say "never two without three"? It seems so. Here I am again on the forum to share—and let’s be honest, indulge a bit of selfish pleasure—by recounting the story of this third installment in the Land of the Rising Sun.

Where? It’s all in the title. On the island of Kyushu in southern Japan, more precisely in the northwest between Fukuoka and Nagasaki. I hope to take you along with me for 19 nights and 18 full days this autumn of 2024. On the itinerary: gastronomy, crafts, festivals, waterfalls, encounters, and leisurely strolls in all simplicity.

A last-minute flight booked just 7 days before departure, and the route evolved regularly based on whims and accommodation availability, eventually settling on this:

- 5 nights in Fukuoka: Fukuoka city, Ukiha, Itoshima, Dazaifu, Yanagawa - 4 nights in Hasami, Nagasaki Prefecture: Okawachiyama, Arita, Takeo, Kashima, Yobuko, Karatsu, Kabeshima - 6 nights in Nagasaki: Ureshino, Higashi-Sonogi, Nagasaki city, Unzen, Sotome - 4 nights in Fukuoka: Karatsu, Fukuoka city

Most of the trip was done by car for practical reasons—easier access to certain places and freedom of movement—but also for the sheer joy of it. Despite slow traffic at times, driving in rural Japan is a delight.

Review of a Mediterranean cruise on the Splendida and 24 hours in Venice – October 2024

Hi everyone,

What a joy to be back here and pick up where we left off after all these months of hiatus.

I hope you’ll enjoy the story of this little trip around the Eastern Mediterranean. This cruise was the perfect way to satisfy our longing to return to Greece and Istanbul. The end of the season, until late November, is the best time to visit the Mediterranean in my opinion—when climate disruptions don’t get in the way.

Departing from Trieste, our stops were Katakolon, Piraeus, Kusadasi, Istanbul, Corfu, and Bari, before returning to Trieste and then Venice, where we planned a very short 24-hour stay.

We left home at 6:15 AM—our first cruise departure since moving to Normandy. What I miss most about living in the Gard is how close we were to Marseille Airport. No more hopping over to Marignane in an hour; now we have to plan for a three-hour trip to CDG, even under the best conditions on an early Sunday morning.

It was impossible to book a hotel night before our flight because, starting in April, the Ibis was priced at 450 € per night, and the Mercure was flirting with 800 €—breakfast not included, of course. 😏

I had a feeling there must’ve been a conference or something going on… Turns out, it was just the auto show. They simply adjusted the room prices to match the cost of the cars. 😛

Our flight took us to Venice, where we caught a FlixBus to Trieste. We arrived at Trieste’s train station in the afternoon and walked to our hotel in the city center.

After treating ourselves to an amazing pizza at a restaurant (Di Napoli Maestri Pizzaioli, Via Armando Diaz 10) for a very reasonable price, we enjoyed the mild evening temperature while exploring the stunning buildings of this charming city by night. These magnificent structures are a testament to the city’s past. Trieste became Austrian in 1382 due to its complicated relationship with Venice, and it wasn’t until 1918, at the end of World War I, that it became Italian again. The city’s lighting beautifully highlights the architecture of the buildings.

The terraces were lively, and the atmosphere was so warm and inviting that we wanted to stay out even longer.

But we’d been up since 4 AM, so we were happy to retreat to the quiet of our hotel, located in the pedestrian center just a few steps from the port (Urban Hotel Design—highly recommended).

Hurtigruten Coastal Express from Trondheim to Stamsund

Hi there, I’m planning our next (pricey) trip to Norway. It’ll be a road trip with accommodations either in Airbnbs or hotels. I’ve been dreaming of going to the LOFOTEN for ages, but I don’t want to skip the big fjords either (Geiranger, Flam, Bergen, Stavanger). So to combine both, I thought of doing a round trip from Trondheim to Stamsund with Hurtigruten and spending 4 nights in the southern LOFOTEN. The fares are so steep that I don’t think I can do more. The coastal road is certainly beautiful up to BODØ, but with the stops to plan, it ends up costing as much as taking the boat—plus the fatigue and extra kilometers. Has anyone taken the Coastal Express with their vehicle from TRONDHEIM to STAMSUND?

3-week road trip in the American West

So, I'm in the middle of planning a 3-week road trip, and of course, I have a ton of questions. But first, maybe I should start with the basics:

When: July 5–28, 2025. Who: 4 people (2 teens and 2 adults). How: Flight tickets already booked (LH and United).

Where (overnights): 07/05: Arrival in SF. Night in SF. 07/06: SF. 07/07: SF. 07/08: Early departure? for Yosemite (Mariposa) – question 1. 07/09: Yosemite. 07/10: Mammoth Lake? (Accommodation in the area? Or somewhere else like 2 nights in Death Valley?) – question 2. 07/11: Death Valley. 07/12: LV. 07/13: LV. 07/14: Zion. 07/15: Bryce Canyon. 07/16: Bryce Canyon. 07/17: Moab. 07/18: Moab. 07/19: Moab. 07/20: Monument Valley. 07/21: Page. 07/22: Grand Canyon (better to stay 2 nights in Page or Grand Canyon?) – question 3. 07/23: Grand Canyon. 07/24: Kingman. 07/25: LA. 07/26: LA. 07/27: LA. 07/28: Return to France.

And question 4: For the car rental, I think it’s better to pick it up right when we arrive (to save time). But once we get to LA, should we drop it off at the airport or earlier to avoid being stuck with it (and paying extra for parking)? (We’re staying near Venice Beach for now.)

Anyway, if you spot any other inconsistencies, let me know! But I think it should work—I’ve already read 5 or 6 travel journals, so I’m feeling pretty set. :)

Right now, I’m deep into researching the rental car. I’m tempted to go for the Tahoe, but I’m not sure which site to use... So far, it’s hovering around 2000 €—quite the budget!

Nous avons avons de la famille sur place ( les enfants sont plus jeunes). Premier séjour aux États-Unis. Pour cause professionnelle la durée sur place est limitée. les vols sont achetés aux horaires qui nous conviennent: arrivée à SF dimanche 13h35 , départ le mardi 23h00. Après un road trip Nous souhaitons être de retour à SF le samedi soir: visites avec les 2 familles le dimanche, puis entre nous le lundi et mardi j'envisage cet esquisse de programme: dimanche soir :nuit à Midpines Lundi visite de Yosemite park , nuit à Fresno mardi visite de Sequoia park nuit à Three Rivers mercredi route et visite de Trona Pinnacles nuit à Ridgecrest jeudi visite Death Valley Furnace Creek nuit à Las Végas pour le vendredi : le Grand Canyon donne vraiment envie d''être visité , nuit au Grand Canyon? samedi retour vers Las Vegas puis vol vers SF en fin d’après-midi ( je ne prends pas le risque de réserver ce vol plusieurs semaines à l'avance) ou route toute la journée vers SF. votre avis trop chargé , je supprime soit Death Valley , soit le Grand Canyon , les 2 ?

j'ai regardé pour arriver directement à Las Vegas plutôt que San Francisco le premier jour mais il faut ajouté presque 600€ ( j'ai eu les 4 aller-retour Paris SF à 1240€). Si le premier jour je vais à LV en avion en partant de SF quelle marge prendre entre le départ du 2eme vol et l'arrivée du premier? Pour les hébergements j'essaie de trouver sur hotel.com car j'ai un programme fidélité lors de mes déplacements pro. Merci pour vos conseils William

L’air de rien, monsieur l’hiver s’est installé confortablement, apportant avec lui dans ses bagages ses amis les nuages grisâtres, nuits tombant à dix-sept heures, gouttes au nez et vieux barbu tout de rouge vêtu. Chanceux que je suis, c’est à ce moment précis que chaque année, le génie sort de ma lampe de chevet : « Bonjour maître ! Qu’est-ce qui vous ferait plaisir ?... Un nouveau petit voyage, peut-être ? - Je dis oui, oui et re-oui » ! Chouette, il est temps de préparer les valises et de faire un choix. Choix très difficile entre mes tongs bleues et mes tongs orange. Et puis choix de la destination ! Pique-nique-douille, c’est toi l’andouille de Guéméné ! Suosdei !!! Si je te dis « Salut » dans une langue qui fleure bon l’exotisme, c’est que nous allons ensemble partager un nouveau voyage en direction de l’Asie du sud-est. Et oui, l’Asie du sud-est en hiver, il n’y a rien de mieux pour te requinquer un homme. Et puis l’Asie du sud-est, je l’ai dans la peau, au sens propre comme au sens figuré. Et cette fois-ci, ce sera dans un pays frontalier de la Thaïlande, du Laos et du Vietnam. Pays sous protectorat français jusqu’en 1953, titre d’une chanson de Kim Wilde, pays dont la capitale est Phnom Penh, je suis, je suis, … Ding dong, trop tard !... Le Cambodge !

Qui dit introduction à un nouveau voyage dit aussi interrogatoire. Je mets ma petite robe blanche moulante, je croise, je décroise les jambes, … Oups, j’avais oublié de mettre une culotte… C’est bon, l’interrogatoire peut débuter :

Qui ? Pour m’accompagner, ma femme et mes deux filles qu’on appellera pour cette histoire Sandrine, Anna et Sasha... tout simplement parce que ce sont leurs prénoms ! On devait être accompagné par mes deux parents qui nous ont déjà suivis en Thaïlande il y a maintenant sept ans, mais une petite opération du genou a contraint ma mère à jeter l’éponge dans le visage de son chirurgien au dernier moment. Seul mon père sera de la sauterie en tant que guest star ! On souhaite donc tous ensemble la bienvenue à notre fournisseur d’anecdotes !

Combien ? On part un vendredi et on rentre un dimanche deux semaines plus tard…. Donc si tu comptes bien sur tes dix doigts, ça fait dix-sept jours, voyage compris.

Quoi ? Un voyage mi-routard, mi-pénard. Un circuit optimisé en restant au minimum trois jours par endroit pour éviter de perdre trop de temps dans les transports. De la découverte, des vieilles pierres, de la gastronomie, des rencontres, de la bonne bière, de l’exploration, … Et puis on n’oublie surtout pas de brosser « Martine » dans le bon sens en finissant par quelques jours de repos à l’ombre des cocotiers.

Où ? Pour commencer, le noooooord avec Siem Reap, puis Koh Rong tout au sud. On enchaîne ensuite par Koh Rong Samloem, pour finir tranquillement par Phnom Penh d’où nous regagnerons nos pénates.

Comment ? Scooter, tuk tuk, bus, bateau et tongs. Voilà nos moyens de locomotion ! Come on baby, do the locomooootion...

Bon, je crois avoir répondu à toutes tes questions. Aladin, à la deux, il est donc l’heure d’y aller mon bon génie : Pour tous les amoureux de l’Asie du sud-est ou pour te donner l'envie de le devenir, je déclare donc officiellement ce nouveau voyage ouvert ! Et là, tu te dis peut-être : « Oh, la chance qu’il a !!! » C’est marrant toutes ces personnes qui te répondent systématiquement ça quand tu leur annonces que tu pars en voyage… Premièrement, je ne vois pas ce que la chance vient faire là-dedans puisqu’il suffit de saisir son numéro de carte bancaire sur internet pour gagner un billet d’avion. Crois-moi sur parole, rien de plus simple, on gagne à tous les coups ! Deuxièmement, à tous ceux qui s’imaginent que les voyages, ce n’est que Bisounours et licornes pailletées, je rappelle quand même que la première journée d’un voyage, c’est-à-dire la journée d’aujourd’hui, rime toujours avec aéroport, avion, attente, décalage horaire, fatigue, … Un beau programme à te faire aimer le RER un jour de grève ! Mais rassure-toi, avec moi, inutile d'attacher ta ceinture, ça va être un voyage pépère, hyper rapide, sans zone de turbulences, ni même d’hôtesse à reluquer… puisqu'on est déjà arrivé !! Et oui, moi président, je t’ai exonéré des trois vols qui nous ont menés de Paris à Siem Reap en passant par Amman et Bangkok. Moi président, je t’ai fait grâce de vingt-quatre heures de transport éreintantes. Moi, président, je te dispense solennellement de toutes ces cernes sur ton visage puisque Sandrine se les est toutes accaparées... Seul fait marquant à se mettre sous la dent : Le petit Jésus des avions a sournoisement essayé de nous faire louper notre correspondance à Bangkok ! En direct live rien que pour toi, en voici le récit : On s’installe confortablement dans les sièges en face de notre porte d’embarquement F1A, on s’endort, on se réveille trois heures après, Jean-Michel Ecran au-dessus de notre porte affiche désormais « Shanghai » en lieu et place de « Siem Reap » qui y trônait pourtant fièrement tout à l’heure ! As-tu déjà vu le film « Maman j’ai raté l’avion » ? Et bien voici, « Maman, j’ai presque raté l’avion » ! En voici le scénario… Je m’enquière de la situation auprès d’une gentille hôtesse qui me répond que l’embarquement pour Siem Reap a déménagé en porte D1A à l’autre bout de l’aéroport pendant notre sommeil. « Vite, vite, la porte ferme dans huit minutes !... » S’il te plait, pour la suite de l’histoire, il te faut mettre la musique de Mission impossible... Pan ! C’est partie pour la finale du cent-dix mètres haies en direct de l’aéroport de Bangkok !... Ouf, un brin essoufflé, je remporte la victoire haut la main !... Sauf que, … déconfiture totale ! Du même genre que lorsque tes deux meilleurs attaquants sont forfaits pour la finale de la ligue des champions : En porte D1A, ils embarquent pour un vol pour « Abou Dhabi » !!! « Siem Reap, Siem Reap, please ? - Gate J1A ! » C’est pas possible, l’autre andouillette de tout à l’heure ne sait pas prononcer les « J » correctement ! Nouvelle course folle dans l'aéroport. Je prends de nouveau la tête du convoi, les autres tentant laborieusement de me coller au train. Me voyant arriver en courant, l'hôtesse d’embarquement me fait des signes de loin pour m'indiquer que c'est fini… Horreur, malheur !!! Une fois à sa hauteur, Youhou, champagne, elle m’indiquait en fait qu'il n'était pas nécessaire de courir car le vol a du retard. Allez, Champomy, c’est moi qui régale ! Enfin, … verre d’eau pour tout le monde, quoi !

La description de ce 9 février se termine avec une arrivée tardive à Siem Reap, un passage des formalités administratives bien longuet et rudimentaire, et un transport en tuk tuk affrété par notre hôtel pour traverser pour la première fois cette ville que je découvre enfin ; elle que je connais par procuration grâce à toutes mes innombrables lectures préparatoires d’avant voyage. J’ai un peu l’impression de rencontrer pour la première fois une personne rencontrée virtuellement de longue date sur internet. J’ai aussi l’impression de me sentir comme à la maison. Ça me fait ça à chaque fois avec l’Asie du sud-est. Les odeurs, les bruits, l'ambiance… Je ne saurais comment l'expliquer, mais il n'y a pas de période d'adaptation… Un petit mot sur notre hôtel, La Rose Blanche, établissement un peu excentré mais qui nous ravit les yeux dès notre arrivée. Comme dit l'adage, « avec l'âge, on s'embourgeoise ». Il est possible de trouver à Siem Reap des hôtels vraiment pas chers. Mais en mettant un tout petit peu plus que pas cher, il est possible de trouver de petites perles comme le nôtre dans lequel nous passerons les cinq prochaines nuits bien au chaud.

Allez, quelques morceaux de crocodile grillés sur un petit barbecue cambodgien dans un restaurant pas très loin de notre camp de base et c’est déjà l’heure de l’extinction des feux. Je sais que quelques heures seulement nous séparent de nos premières découvertes et il ne faudrait pas qu’on y arrive fatigués. Je te dis donc tout simplement à demain si tu le veux bien, et surtout si tu souhaites nous accompagner dans ce nouveau numéro de Dora l’exploratrice. De toute façon, demain est une autre aventure...
