Hi, Our son, currently in Central America, will board a sailboat on 04/16 to cross the Atlantic. He’s expected to arrive around 05/31 in Port-Saint-Louis-du-Rhône, and we’d like to welcome him on the day he arrives. I’m looking for accommodation in the area for a few days around that date, from which we can explore the Camargue. We’ll be bringing our e-bikes. Could you tell me which towns to look in and which areas to avoid, please? I think Port-Saint-Louis isn’t a great option if we want to avoid the toll for the ferry every time we leave by car. hi, I'm planning a recumbent bike trip from the Pyrenees to Greece. On the EuroVelo 8 route, it doesn't specify the path through the Alps. Are there any experienced cyclists here who can tell me where they go to avoid climbing too high? Also, is there another traveler/bike forum better suited for broadening the responses? thanks

Hi there, I’m a bit late to be worrying about this, but hopefully someone can help me before I leave. Tomorrow afternoon, I arrive at Lyon Part-Dieu on the TGV at 5:50 PM and take the TER to Mâcon at 6:16 PM. Is a 26-minute transfer doable? Are the TGV and TER on the same departure board? And are they on the same platforms too? I’ve been to Lyon before but never had to make a connection after arriving. Thanks

Hi there, I’m struggling to get back into hiking and I’m considering tackling the GR5 from Lake Geneva to the Mediterranean shores in August-September.

Since I can’t plan daily distances in advance, I’ll be bringing gear to bivouac.

I’m not familiar with this route and wanted to get an idea of water resupply options before setting off: are sources and streams still flowing easily in late summer on this GR, or should I prepare for long dry stretches? 😐

If you're walking around the southern part of Lake Bourget, you can't escape the noise from a parachuting club's planes. A group of climate skeptics actually takes off in small, very noisy aircraft every 15 minutes over a Natura 2000 classified area. They don’t seem to face any restrictions—neither for noise nor for greenhouse gas emissions. They occupy the airspace without paying fuel taxes or providing carbon compensation to local municipalities or environmental preservation associations, apparently. It sounds surreal, but it’s very real in such an important location.

A really nice nature walk at the entrance to the lake in the Natura 2000-listed nature reserve. It’s a great opportunity to see lots of bird species, plants, and the famous European pond turtle, as well as some beautiful medieval architecture remnants with Thomas II’s castle. The walk is slightly spoiled by the noise from the Savoie parachute club’s planes, which take off every fifteen minutes and dump fuel on the site non-stop, even after nightfall.

I’ve lived in Savoie long enough to tell you one thing: Vanoise National Park isn’t just a pretty postcard. Here, nature is vast, untamed, and incredibly alive. Whether you're visiting for a holiday or live in a nearby valley, here are my top picks you shouldn’t miss.

Sleeping in a mountain hut—the best way to experience the mountains

Hiking in Vanoise National Park is already magical, but spending a night in a refuge? That’s sacred. I recommend the glacier tour, a 4- to 7-day trek with stops at huts like L’Arpont, Dent Parrachée, or Leisse. The food’s great, you’ll meet other hikers, and in the early morning, when the sun lights up the peaks, I guarantee you won’t be thinking about your emails. Even a single night at Refuge du Fond d’Aussois or La Valette is enough to unplug.

High-altitude lakes: when the peaks reflect in the water

High-altitude lakes are a bit like my madeleine de Proust. I love climbing up early in the morning when everything’s still quiet. Lac Blanc, starting from Termignon, is a pretty accessible hike, often punctuated by the whistling of marmots. Wilder, Lac de la Glière near Champagny-en-Vanoise is one of my favorite spots for a picnic far from everything.



Glacial valleys—my breath of fresh air

I often go there to reconnect with the mountains, especially when I want a spectacular setting without hours of climbing. The Orgère valley, starting from Saint-André in Maurienne, is a gem. Easy to access, super wild, with its Swiss pine trees and singing streams... You’re instantly immersed in the alpine atmosphere. A little higher up, from Val Cenis/Termignon, I recommend the Cirque du Génépy. It’s an old glacial landscape just the way we love it: rocks smoothed by ice, near-total silence, and a real sense of the end of the world.

Glacier mountaineering at the heart of the ice

For the more athletic (and always with a guide, of course), climbing the Grande Casse, 3,855 m, remains a legendary goal. I’ve only done it once, but what a rush! You’ll need crampons, an ice axe, and good fitness, but the view up there is indescribable. There are also more accessible glacial routes around Pointe de la Réchasse or the Dôme de Chasseforêt.

Gateways to Vanoise National Park

Bonneval-sur-Arc... this little village perched at 1,835 meters, I never get tired of it. It’s kept its charm: stone houses, slate roofs, fountains... It’s simple, everything’s beautiful. It’s also a great base for hiking in the park. And then there’s Pralognan-la-Vanoise, my favorite gateway. It’s a mountain village just the way I like them—quiet streets, typical chalets, and above all, direct access to incredible landscapes.

Looking at the department map and the main sites to see, I’d personally go for 2 bases to avoid too much driving. We’re thinking of leaving our car at Chapelle en Valgaudemar and going hiking for three days with two nights in a mountain refuge. At the end of the third day, do you know if it’s possible to take a bus or coach to get back to Chapelle en Valgaudemar? From Pont du Fossé or Chabottes. If not, would you have another more suitable route to suggest?

Hi there, We’d like to spend 2 days in Lyon in May with our 8- and 12-year-old kids, exploring the city on foot. We’ll arrive on day 1 around 11 AM and leave on day 2 around 6 PM.

I’ve mapped out two routes and was wondering if they’re doable in our 2 days, and if you have any tips or info on visit prices.

We’re not sure where to stay yet, but we’d like to optimize by booking accommodation (hotel or Airbnb) between the two routes, maybe?

Hi fellow bike-packers, so I’m heading out solo by bike this spring, like I do every year—around 1,500 to 2,000 km in total. This time I want to explore the south of France. I’ll start by meeting up with a buddy in Ariège, and after that the road’s wide open toward the east, aiming for Drôme. If anyone has route ideas—especially quiet backroads, places I can wild-camp pretty much anywhere, and climbs that aren’t too steep—I’m all ears! Thanks, and see you around here or on the road. Claudio will head up the Arve Valley from Geneva to Chamonix via Annemasse, Cluses, Sallanches, and Argentière, then make his way to Martigny, Switzerland, through Finhaut, and return via the Rhône Valley and the ViaRhôna: St-Gingolph, Evian, Thonon, and back to Geneva.

Bonjour Je suis passé hier (19/09/20) par le tunnel du Mortier qui permet de rejoindre le Vercors à la vallée de l'Isère en descendant sur Montaud, ou l'inverse si on vient de la vallée de l'Isère. Le tunnel est fermé pour la période du 21 septembre au 16 octobre 2020. Il y a des panneaux en bas qui préviennent de la fermeture. Sinon le Vercors c'est super chouette à vélo, il y a pas mal de dénivelé mais les paysages sont variés et magnifiques.

Je souhaite rejoindre Roucoules grâce à la Via Fluvia, soit en partant depuis l'Ouest à Lavoute-sur-Rhone ou bien depuis l'Est à Sarras.

Selon vous, quel serait l'itinéraire le plus abouti ? Apparemment entre Sarras et Annonay la voie n'a pas été crée mais la route est tranquille. SI possible je souhaite éviter les portions accidentées avec beaucoup de cailloux, mon VTC n'est pas vraiment confortable 😄 .
