Thanks for your helpful comments! :)
Your feedback on my Iceland itinerary this summer
by Didipol · 2025-06-16 · 1 reply
Hello Community!

I’ll be in Iceland from June 26 to July 14 (19 days). The trip is split into two parts: Day 1 to Day 13 as a 4x4 road trip / Day 14 to Day 19 as the Laugavegur Trek. We’ll be in a 4x4 like a Jimny with a roof tent, and for the trek, we’ll be self-sufficient (tent, sleeping mat, etc.).

I’ve tried to put together a summary below. Even though I’ve already used the forum a lot to build this itinerary, I’d love to hear your thoughts: any improvements? additions? priorities? recommended campgrounds?

Thanks in advance for sharing! :)

Looking forward to reading your replies!

Best, Clément

Where to spend 6 weeks in Costa Rica in early 2026 for a retired couple?
by Reist · 2025-06-07 · 15 replies
We’re a retired couple in our 70s looking to spend six weeks in Costa Rica between mid-January and mid-March 2026. We’d like to stay in comfortable bungalows (2x3 weeks) and rent a car for the entire period. We enjoy light hiking and some beach time, but we also love relaxing on a shaded veranda, reading, and unwinding. Which places would suit these preferences? We have a lot of experience with this kind of stay in the French West Indies or Indian Ocean islands but have never been to Central America. Does anyone have good tips?
Which destination in Central America? Still undecided
by Blogob · 2025-03-20 · 5 replies
Hi there,

We’re planning a trip to Central America and South America, but we’re still unsure about the destination. It’s for a trip in July 2025, so weather is definitely a factor. For Ecuador, the weather seems favorable, but my wife knows an Ecuadorian woman who told her that the security situation has really deteriorated, especially on the west side (beaches, etc.).

Has anyone traveled to Ecuador recently (in 2025) and could share their experience? (security situation, recommended itineraries)

In terms of things to see (typical villages, landscapes), weather, and prices, Ecuador seems more appealing to us than Costa Rica or Panama, which we’re also considering.
Choosing between Jaffna and the east coast in April (Sri Lanka)
by Jlucetmjo · 2025-02-23 · 4 replies
Hi there. We’re spending a month in Sri Lanka in March, and we’ll have one week left after leaving Polonnaruwa. We’re torn between spending it in the Jaffna region or on the east coast between Batticaloa and Trincomalee. We’re divers, so the east coast appeals to us for snorkeling, beaches, and lagoons—but it seems like late March might not be the best time for that coast. What do you think? As for Jaffna, the culture of the region, its more authentic feel since it’s less touristy, and the offshore islands all appeal to us too—but it seems far from the rest of the country and harder to access. We have to choose because we won’t be able to visit both sides, and I’d love to hear your thoughts. Thanks, Marie
From Split to Mostar via Montenegro: Various questions (sightseeing, hikes, etc.)
by Attila · 2025-02-19 · 6 replies
Hi there! 🙂

Our summer destination is set: it’ll be a European loop starting from Auvergne, heading down to southern Croatia and then Montenegro, with a return via Mostar.

We’ll zip down to southern Croatia in two stages (we’ve been as far as Šibenik on a previous trip). Here are our booked stops:

Split – 2 nights Makarska – 1 night (via Sveti Jure) Pelješac Peninsula – 6 nights (day trips to Dubrovnik and Korčula from here – Mljet?) Kotor – 1 night Between Cetinje and Budva – 3 nights (Lovćen, Budva, Lake Skadar from our rental) Near Žabljak – 3 nights (via Ostrog / Mrtvica Canyon, Durmitor National Park) Mostar – 2 nights (via Blagaj)

Back to Auvergne in two stages.

Here are my questions:

- Any ideas for sights, detours, or hikes (no more than 500 m elevation gain and 15 km distance) along this route?

- What’s the deal with crossing borders between Croatia and Montenegro, then Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina? I’ve read that the crossing between the first two countries can take hours in the summer...

- Crowds in Croatia: Dubrovnik is apparently best avoided on days when cruise ships dock. I found a site that shows how many ships arrive each day. It says none on Sundays—but is Sunday really accurate? What other places suffer from overtourism? (Before Italian vacation season starts.)

All your suggestions are welcome (just FYI, guided tours, jet skis, jet-set vibes, and quad-bike conga lines are *not* on my wishlist)!

Thanks! 😉

Authentic Greece: Immersion in the Hellenic Soul
by VoyageForum · 2025-02-07 · 0 replies
Beyond Athens' iconic sites and Santorini's popular beaches, Greece reveals its hidden treasures to those who dare venture off the beaten path. FairMoove travel agency offers eco-responsible stays in Greece for an authentic experience at the heart of Hellenic traditions.

Authentic Peloponnese: A Land of Living Traditions

The Peloponnese peninsula is home to traditional villages where time seems to have stood still. In Dimitsana, perched in the Arcadian mountains, locals keep centuries-old traditions alive in their craft workshops. The cobbled streets echo with the sound of traditional looms, where artisans still create textiles using age-old methods.

In the Mani region, ancient stone towers tell the story of an untamed land. Local families welcome you into their traditional homes to share their culinary art: olive oil preparation, olive bread making, and dolmades crafted according to recipes passed down through generations. The Unknown Islands: Preserved Jewels of the Aegean Sea

Far from Mykonos' hustle and bustle, Ikaria island reveals its longevity secrets. This blue island, known for its inhabitants' exceptional lifespan, invites you to discover a unique way of life. Join the panigiria, traditional festivals where the entire community gathers to dance, sing, and share local dishes prepared in large communal ovens.

On Lemnos island, fishermen introduce you to their traditional sustainable fishing techniques. The ancient salt pans, still in operation, bear witness to ancestral know-how. In family-run tavernas by the harbor, taste thallasomelo, a unique sea honey produced by bees foraging on wild thyme from coastal cliffs. Greek Macedonia: A Living Heritage

In the northern mountains, the villages of Zagoria preserve their characteristic stone architecture. Eighteenth-century arched bridges still span deep gorges, showcasing a unique construction art. Locals invite you to discover medicinal herb gathering and traditional herbal tea preparation, knowledge passed down through generations.

In Nymfaio, a village perched at 1,350 meters altitude, ecotourism initiatives help preserve the natural habitat of brown bears. Traditional stone guesthouses offer an ideal base for exploring the region and observing wildlife in its natural environment. Agritourism and Authentic Rural Life

Traditional farms in Thessaly open their doors to travelers eager to discover sustainable agriculture. Participate in the autumn olive harvest, traditional feta cheese making, or the cultivation of aromatic herbs that flavor Greek cuisine. These experiences not only support the local economy but also help preserve ancestral farming practices.

Traditional Festivals and Local Celebrations

The Greek calendar is marked by authentic celebrations that vary by region. In Pelion, the Goat Carnival transforms villages into living theater stages, where pagan traditions blend with Christian folklore. On Syros, the rebetiko festival lets you discover this UNESCO-listed music in its original context. Sustainable Initiatives and Heritage Preservation

Many Greek communities are committed to sustainable tourism projects. On Thirassia, Santorini's lesser-known neighbor, a traditional troglodyte house rehabilitation project allows visitors to stay in authentic dwellings while contributing to architectural heritage preservation. Supporting Local Communities

Women's cooperatives, particularly active in rural areas, offer traditional craft workshops. In Arnaia, Chalkidiki, learn to weave on traditional looms or prepare preserves using age-old methods. These initiatives help women maintain economic independence while preserving local traditions.

For more responsible tourism, many accommodations adopt eco-friendly practices. Using local products, sustainable water management, and solar energy production are among the initiatives that help preserve places' authenticity while respecting the environment.

Tips for an Authentic Trip

To discover the real Greece, choose off-season stays from October to April. Milder temperatures and fewer crowds allow for more authentic encounters with locals. Opt for small family-run guesthouses and host tables that offer true immersion in local culture.

Greece's regions thus invite you to discover another facet of this millennia-old country, far from tourist clichés. Each village, each island, each mountain holds authentic treasures waiting to be discovered by travelers who respect traditions and the environment.
10-Day Itinerary in South Africa
by HelloRio · 2025-01-27 · 8 replies
Hi everyone, My partner, our 6-year-old daughter, and I are heading to South Africa in early July. I’d love your thoughts and insights on our planned itinerary: Day 1: Arrival in Joburg in the early afternoon / Overnight near the airport Day 2: Morning flight to Cape Town / Pick up rental car / Explore the city Day 3: Cape Peninsula (Boulders Beach to see the penguins) Day 4: If the weather allows: whale-watching excursion from Hermanus Day 5: Early morning flight to Kruger (Mpumalanga Airport) - Pick up rental car and head to the Blyde River Canyon Panoramic Route (stops at Mac Mac Falls, Lisbon or Berlin Falls, and Three Rondavels) / Overnight on Orpen Road as close as possible to Orpen Gate Day 6: Enter Kruger National Park via Orpen Gate for a self-drive safari / Overnight to be decided? Day 7: Kruger National Park / Overnight at Letaba Rest Camp (the only night we’ve managed to book in the park so far) Day 8: Self-drive safari from Letaba Rest Camp to Manyeleti Game Reserve (overnight booked at Honeyguide Khoka Moya lodge) Day 9: Morning guided safari in the private reserve, then return to Joburg Day 10: Return flight in the late afternoon from Joburg Airport What do you think? Do you think Day 5 is doable? Does the Panoramic Route in half a day from the airport seem realistic to you? It’s tough to find availability in the rest camps. Any suggestions for a place to stay between Orpen Gate and Letaba (Day 6)? On the way back (Day 9), we’re considering stopping overnight between Kruger Park and Joburg. What do you think? Any towns or stops you’d recommend? Thanks so much for your help!
Best spots for 8 days in Iceland?
by Pénéllope · 2025-01-25 · 7 replies
Hi everyone,

We’re planning an 8–9 day trip in October 2025. The goal is to take it slow, enjoy two spots for hiking, photography, and soaking up nature—without rushing. Iceland’s seeing a tourism boom in places like the Golden Circle and Blue Lagoon, which we’d rather skip.

We’re thinking of spending 3–4 days on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. Then, we could add the peninsula near Reykjavík (where the airport is) or head up to Blönduós in the north. Another option is taking the ferry via Flatey Island to reach the northwest fjords and just explore the southern part.

There’s also an airport in Ísafjörður—we could fly there and base ourselves in the Westfjords for the whole week… Or check out the north around Akureyri. Alternatively, would it be more doable and practical to stay around Vík?

Which stops to make between Dubrovnik and Split?
by Rosedrls · 2025-01-08 · 5 replies
Hi everyone!

I’m heading to Croatia for the second time (first time was 5 days in Dubrovnik), but this time I’ll be seeing more of the country since I’m renting a car to drive between Dubrovnik and Split. I’ve got 2 days and 2 nights for the trip, and I was wondering which stops I could make. I’m looking for quiet, typical villages or spots where I can swim peacefully—just a nice break between the two touristy cities. 😊

Thanks in advance for your help!
Summer trip to South Africa
by 6cha38 · 2025-01-01 · 23 replies
Hello,

Happy 2025, filled with wonderful travels! 🙂

We’re traveling as a family to South Africa for the first time in July (two parents and our four young adult children). We’ve planned a loop starting from Port Elizabeth for 13 days, followed by another loop from Johannesburg with 2 days at Blyde River Canyon and 5 days in Kruger NP.

We’re wondering about the Port Elizabeth loop. Here’s our initial idea: Day 1: Early arrival in Port Elizabeth, morning walk in Tsitsikamma NP, night at Storm River Rest Camp. Day 2: Continue visiting Tsitsikamma NP early in the morning, then Robberg Nature Reserve, night at Ebb and Flow Rest Camp. Day 3: Visit the Wilderness area, night at Ebb and Flow Rest Camp. Day 4: Drive to Hermanus. Several options: Bontebok NP or The Hoop and Cape Agulhas; night in Hermanus. Day 5: Coastal trail, boat trip (?), night in Cape Town. Day 6: Table Mountain, Bo-Kaap, Waterfront; night in Cape Town. Day 7: Cape Peninsula, night in Cape Town. Day 8: Karoo Desert National Botanical Garden, Matjiesfontein; night in the area. Day 9: AM: Karoo NP; night in Beaufort West. Day 10: Karoo NP; night in Beaufort West. Day 11: AM: Camdeboo NP; night in Graaff-Reinet. Day 12: Morning: Camdeboo NP; drive to Addo Elephant NP; visit depending on arrival time; night at Addo Elephant Rest Camp. Day 13: Addo Elephant NP; night in Port Elizabeth. Day 14: Early flight.

Does this seem balanced and suitable for July? It’s quite packed, but we’ve already had to skip quite a bit. Initially, would it be better to spend 2 nights in Tsitsikamma and just one in Wilderness? Or just one night at each to free up a day for something else?

For the car, is a minivan enough, or should we plan at least an SUV for the parks given the season?

Thanks in advance for your feedback. Have a great evening

What to see in Montenegro?
by Lechefrando · 2024-11-15 · 11 replies
Hi everyone on Voyage Forum! In mid-September 2025, a group of friends and I are heading to Montenegro for a week. On my must-see list, I’ve obviously got the Bay of Kotor and Lake Skadar. Besides those two excursions, what else would you recommend seeing or visiting? Just to note, we’ll be staying in the Bijela area.

Another question: Is Tivat Airport operating during that period? I think Transavia flies there. Otherwise, we’d have to go through Dubrovnik, which I’d prefer to avoid—partly because I’ve been there before and partly to skip the border wait.

Looking forward to your replies or suggestions!

Osaka ou pas Osaka? English translation pending

by Croisifan · 2020-03-21 · 124 replies

by Jeff17 · 2020-03-12 · 0 replies
