History of Larache
What to see and do in Larache
- The city: Architecturally, Larache has retained some Spanish influence from decades of Spanish presence in this part of Morocco. The most lively spot is Liberation Square, an Arab-Andalusian-style plaza lined with cafés. Nearby are the souks and the medina, whose alleys lead down to the port. The city’s Spanish cemetery, at the end of the corniche, is where writer Jean Genet is buried.
Lixus
These Roman ruins, 2 or 3 kilometres from Larache across the river, represent the second ancient site in Morocco after Volubilis. The site itself includes, among other things, the remains of an acropolis, temples, and an amphitheatre.

- Port Lixus: Port Lixus is one of those large seaside projects conceived a few years ago by the Moroccan government (the "Azur Plan") that have struggled to materialize in terms of funding and completion. In short, Port Lixus is a future seaside resort on the outskirts of Larache, planned to eventually include 12,000 beds, a marina, and a golf course (already built).
