Entry Requirements and Visa for Madagascar
People
For tourist travel purposes.
For French Citizens
A passport valid for at least 6 months beyond the end of your stay in the country is required, as is a visa allowing a maximum of 3 months on site. Note that this "tourist" visa cannot be extended later. Since January 1, 2016, a tourist tax of 10 € is payable by every foreigner entering the country.
It should also be noted that a yellow fever vaccination certificate may be required for travellers coming (only) from a country where there is a risk of yellow fever.
Where to Apply for Your Visa?
You can obtain your visa from Malagasy consular representations in your country of residence or in a third country, as well as on arrival. The latter option remains the simplest (even if "customs racketeering" is still a possibility...) and simply requires presenting your passport to customs officers with the completed form given out on the plane (no photos needed) and payment in cash.
For those who prefer to apply before departure, they must provide the consulate with a copy of their return flight ticket (or travel agency confirmation) which will determine the authorised duration of the visa, two identical passport photos, plus the appropriate form filled out and signed, available on the websites of Malagasy representations abroad. Depending on the consulate, the visa is issued within 1 to 3 days. For postal applications, use registered mail or Chronopost.
Visa Fees
Since early 2016, visa fees have changed. The visa allowing a stay of up to 30 days, previously free, now costs 31 €; the 60-day visa costs 39 €, and the 90-day visa is 54 €. It’s therefore useful to know how long you plan to stay when applying, even though the flight dates on your ticket are what actually count (it is sometimes possible to "negotiate" an extension of 1 or 2 days). Also note that these fees may be slightly higher if applying at certain consulates or lower if paid in Ariary on arrival.
Other Nationalities
The requirements are the same for citizens of the European Union and Switzerland.
Long Stays
There is a long-stay visa (over 3 months) which must be obtained from consulates and is not available on arrival at ports or airports in the country. The visa fee is then 110 €.
