Main Cities
The main cities of the region—and the country—are located around San Jose, in the Central Valley at over 1,000 meters. Among those a visitor might encounter during their journey are Alajuela, not far from the capital, Heredia, and Cartago, which was once the capital of Costa Rica long ago.
Tourist Attractions
Cities and Their Heritage
For those interested in architectural or historical heritage, this is the place to be. San José boasts several museums and some beautiful buildings, much like nearby Heredia. In Cartago, you can visit the Basilica of Los Angeles and the ruins of the Santiago Apostol Church. Other (small) remnants of the colonial era can also be discovered around Orosi Valley. That said, this heritage doesn’t quite measure up to what you’ll find in other Central American countries.
Nature and Activities
This is the region’s strong suit, particularly its northern area. This part of Costa Rica is home to the country’s most stunning volcanoes (and some of the most impressive in the region), including Poás, Irazú, and Arenal. It’s also where you’ll find unique parks and reserves, such as Monteverde, Braulio Carrillo National Park, and the Chirripó reserve, which is home to the country’s highest peak. Of course, nature-based activities abound here, with opportunities for trekking, mountain biking, canopy tours, rafting, and other white-water adventures. In short, it’s ideal for nature and adventure lovers...
