Nature and Adventure

While less exploited for tourism than its Costa Rican neighbour, Panama’s nature is just as diverse, with its coastline, islands, mountains, and jungle forming one of the destination’s main attractions. Outdoor and adventure activities are also quite varied—if not as numerous—and "adventure" is definitely part of the experience. However, the eastern part of the country (the Darién) is paradoxically *too* adventurous, having been discouraged for years due to safety concerns. Visitors are advised to opt for a less risky "adventure" instead...

Culture

While Panama’s natural side is obvious and ever-present, the cultural aspect of a stay here can feel somewhat limited for many. Still, the epic story of the canal, the colonial remnants of cities like Panama City, and especially the enduring traditions of indigenous groups like the Kuna people of the San Blas archipelago are well worth exploring.

Relaxation and Holidays

Panama has developed a few holiday zones on its islands (Taboga, Bocas...) and along the Pacific coast (including all-inclusive resorts), though this sector isn’t the country’s strongest selling point in terms of tourism.

Independent Travel

Panama is a relatively easy country to travel, requiring little prior experience—though basic precautions are still needed in a few (rare) places. Infrastructure and facilities are generally good, and language barriers are minimal if you speak at least some Spanish or English, which is widely spoken. In short, it’s a destination for everyone and can easily be combined with a trip to the neighbouring Costa Rica, especially for spots like Bocas del Toro or the Boquete region near the border.

Package and All-Inclusive Travel

Since Panama is primarily a destination for North Americans—and heavily overshadowed in Europe by the Costa Rica—very few French tour operators include it in their programmes. Only a handful of "nature-adventure" specialists and, occasionally, cruise operators do. As for all-inclusive resorts on the Pacific coast, Canadian travel professionals dominate the market. For a wider range of options, local agencies are always the best bet.
