Travelling Between Countries

While some border crossings between countries are few and far between, overall there are very few issues when moving between different regions. Just take the usual precautions at Amazonian borders or when entering or leaving Colombia.

Colombia and Neighbours

  • Brazil or Peru: via the Amazon, there are border crossings, but most, if not all, of the frontier zones with Colombia are considered dangerous. If you must enter Colombia, it’s best to do so via the river port of Leticia on the Amazon, at the tri-border point.
  • Ecuador or Venezuela: here too, the border areas are sometimes advised against due to risks linked to Colombian guerrilla groups and traffickers.

The Guianas

  • Venezuela - Guyana: impossible, as there are no roads between the two (Amazon rainforest). Additionally, there is an old territorial dispute between the countries.
  • Guiana(s) - Brazil: rivers and the Amazon rainforest serve as borders. No issues between the Guianas themselves or between Guiana and Brazil, with possibilities via frontier rivers. However, via the Amazon (southern part of the Guianas), only Guyana offers a way to connect to Brazil—and even then, it’s not straightforward!
  • Brazil - neighbouring countries (Amazonian zones): crossings (by road or river) are possible at various points. But be cautious—natural challenges and risks linked to trafficking of all kinds are traditionally present in these regions.
