Getting to Bolivia by Land or River
Borders
Bolivia shares borders with five neighbours: Argentina (942 km), Brazil (3,403 km), Chile (942 km), Paraguay (753 km) and Peru (1,075 km).
From Neighbouring Countries
Regardless of the country, there are border crossings to and from Bolivia.
- To/from Argentina: options include both road and rail links (with Ferroviaria Andina and Ferroviaria Oriental) between the two countries.
- To/from Brazil: several routes connect the two countries at Bolivian Pantanal, as well as the train (Ferroviaria Oriental) running three times a week between Santa Cruz and Puerto Quijarro on the Brazilian border. However, in the Amazonian north of Bolivia, while road and river routes exist, they are less reliable.
- To/from Chile: multiple border crossings with northern Chile, as well as the option of arriving by train with the twice-weekly Ferroviaria Andina service, which runs from Uyuni to Avaroa in Bolivia before continuing to Chile and Calama.
- To/from Paraguay: access is via the Chaco provinces.
- To/from Peru: three main crossings around Lake Titicaca between Bolivia and Peru. Other, less obvious options exist on the Amazonian side.
For public transport, several bus companies operate international routes (see networks, schedules and fares). For example, you can easily travel from Lima to La Paz in around thirty hours for just over $100.
