Health and Safety in Albania
Location Map of Albania
Official Recommendations
In France, both for individuals and professionals, the "travel advice" from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding precautions for each country has legal value. A similar online travel advice system exists in several countries:
Health
Illnesses and Hygiene
There are relatively few health risks when traveling in Albania. Nevertheless, it's always best to maintain good hygiene and wash your hands regularly. Similarly, it's wise to avoid tap water as well as dishes or foods that don't seem entirely fresh, which could lead to traveler's diarrhea or worse. While no vaccines are mandatory for the country, keeping up with your "basic vaccinations" is a good idea.
Healthcare Facilities on Site
Like the country, which is becoming an increasingly significant tourism destination with all the changes and improvements that entails, healthcare facilities have also followed suit.
The hospital sector, currently undergoing transformation, is now satisfactory in the capital, major cities, and tourist areas, with international quality standards in private facilities (relatively affordable in terms of cost) as well as in many public establishments. Only rural areas still lag somewhat, though even there, significant improvements are being made. That said, as everywhere, travel insurance can be useful if needed, if only to cover evacuation to neighboring Italy or Greece in serious cases.
Safety
Crime and Delinquency
While it's true that part of the Balkans is a hub for various types of trafficking, this does not affect visitors. For travelers, Albania—despite its lingering reputation—is a relatively safe destination, though like elsewhere, there is some petty crime targeting tourists, such as pickpocketing or theft from vehicles. However, with a few basic precautions and a bit of common sense, there’s little real risk. That said, you may encounter persistent (though not aggressive) solicitations of all kinds.
Socio-Political Risks
Similarly, rivalries and other inter-population issues stemming from recent regional conflicts do not concern tourists, and even less so in Albania than in other nearby areas. Still, some basic precautions are useful near the Kosovar border, where there are also still a few landmines dating from the late 1990s.
Climate, Nature, and Animals
Environmental risks are also quite limited; the southern part of the country is just located in a seismic zone. In another area, watch out for stray dogs, which may carry rabies or other diseases.
Foreign Consulates on Site
If you encounter problems while traveling abroad, your country's consular services can assist you. It's also worth noting that if you're an EU citizen and your country isn't represented, you can contact any other EU member state's representation.
