Entry Requirements and Visa for Tanzania
People
For French Citizens
For tourist travel, a passport valid for at least 6 months beyond the end of your stay is mandatory, as is a visa allowing up to 90 days in the country—though authorities may shorten this period upon arrival. In theory, a return or onward ticket is also required.
A single-entry visa costs 50 €, while a multiple-entry visa costs double. Like other countries, Tanzania now requires all visa applications to be completed online via the official website. However, it is still theoretically possible to obtain a visa on arrival—usually payable in cash (USD)—at the international airports of Arusha-Kilimanjaro, Dar es Salaam, and Zanzibar, as well as at the ports of Kigoma, Dar es Salaam, and Zanzibar. Regarding Zanzibar specifically, note that a separate insurance policy is now required, even if you already have travel insurance. This can be purchased on the official website for $45 per person.
Yellow Fever
Though the risk is very low in the country, Tanzanian authorities remain somewhat ambiguous about whether yellow fever vaccination is mandatory for entry. In theory, it is only required if arriving from a high-risk area (which includes neighboring Kenya), but in practice, immigration officials—particularly in Zanzibar—occasionally enforce the rule for all travelers, including those arriving directly from Europe, under threat of a fine or on-site vaccination.
Other Nationalities
The same requirements apply to citizens of most EU countries, Switzerland, and Canada.
Long Stays
For purely tourist purposes, it is possible to request a visa extension at an immigration office in Dar es Salaam, Arusha, or Zanzibar before the initial 90-day period expires. This may grant an additional 3 months, though approval is always at the discretion of authorities.
In Case of Violation
Tanzania enforces strict penalties. Overstaying even slightly results in a mandatory fine of $600, followed by standard deportation procedures and a potential entry ban for a varying period.
Vehicles
To enter Tanzania with your own vehicle, you will need the following documents: driver’s license, vehicle registration certificate, and a carnet de passages en douane. Additionally, a temporary import permit issued at the border and third-party liability insurance—either purchased at the border or from a local insurance branch in the nearest town—are required. You must also pay a one-time fuel tax.
