Euros and other major currencies are easily exchanged throughout East Africa.

Daily "backpacker" budget for two people:
- Kenya: around 30 € per person for daily expenses + 100/120 € per day for safari.
- Tanzania: 25 to 40 € per person for daily expenses + 100/150 € per day for safari.
What can be expensive:
- Safaris, and not just in lodges.
- Entry fees for most parks and reserves.
- Accommodation in and near parks.
- Vehicle rental.
What can be inexpensive:
- Eating local food.
- Local transport.

While not mandatory, tips are highly appreciated as they can sometimes be the only source of income for some people. It is common to give a small tip to drivers and porters at airports and hotels. In bars and restaurants, a tip of around 10% of the bill is recommended. For safaris, it is advisable to budget 3 to 5 € per day per traveler for each staff member.
