Rental

Bus

As in many countries, there are two categories of buses: the "basic" ones (recycled US school buses) which are the most economical but slow, stopping almost everywhere including on request, and the few "express" or similar services that offer a better, much faster service for a slightly higher price. Both types mainly operate or depart in the morning on Belize’s few roads. In any case, buses remain a very economical way to get around, though they may not always connect to all the pre-Columbian sites tourists want to visit.

Motorcycle

Bike

Since the country is relatively flat, cycling is easy, though the heat, humidity, or rain may discourage many. Biking is more practical on the islands, where it’s a great way to get around. You can usually rent a bike for around $10 US per day.

Hitchhiking

Trains

There are no trains in Belize.

Boats

The main boat routes in the country connect Belize City to the Cayes. The most frequented line runs Belize City - Caye Caulker - San Pedro/Ambergris (continuing to Chetumal in Mexico). The small companies San Pedro Water Taxi and Belize Express Water Taxi's operate numerous daily trips with their fast boats. A trip costs between $15 and $20 US, much less than by plane.

Beyond these lines or companies, you can find other local options for water travel, such as the CCWTA from Caulker, or elsewhere along the coast and on "secondary" cayes like Tobacco. Check locally for water taxis or connections offered by hotels on certain islands.

Domestic Flights

While international flights to Belize are relatively limited, domestic flights are quite well-developed. The sometimes long or difficult access to inland cities, as well as the presence of highly touristic Cayes (Ambergris, Caye Caulker, etc.), ensure steady traffic, particularly through Belize City’s airports.

For tourists, the (short) route between the mainland and the islands is the most popular. There are many daily flights, with prices generally ranging from $50 to $80 US per trip. Note that flights departing from Belize City’s municipal airport are often cheaper than those from the international airport. Two local airlines operate these routes:

  • Maya Island Air: Its domestic flights follow a coastal route, serving around ten cities on the mainland and the islands of Ambergris (San Pedro), Caye Caulker, and Caye Chapel.
  • Tropic Air: Similarly, it serves about a dozen airports on the mainland or the Cayes, with services and prices comparable to its competitor.

On the Islands

Since the cayes are relatively small, you can get around on foot, by bike, or occasionally by golf cart.

What to Choose for Getting Around?

Buses can be a good way to travel in Belize, and boats are often more interesting than planes for reaching the islands.
