Money, Budget, and Shopping in Belize
Money
Currency
- Currency: Belize dollar (100 cents).
- Banknotes: 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, and 100 BZ$.
- Coins: 1, 5, 10, 25, and 50 cents + 1 BZ$.
- Exchange rate:
The Belize dollar has been the country’s currency since 1885. In 1978, it was pegged to the US dollar at a fixed rate of 2 BZ$ = 1 US$. Both currencies circulate freely—and legally—in the country. This means you must always check or ask which "dollar" prices are quoted in.
Exchange
Since you can travel throughout Belize using only US dollars, you can plan accordingly before departure. This is actually recommended, given the exchange rates often offered locally for euros and other currencies. Otherwise, you can exchange money at banks or, more simply, use ATMs, which only dispense Belize dollars.
Payment methods
Card payments are accepted mainly in large hotels, rental agencies, and some shops, particularly on the Cayes. However, watch out for bank fees if you make too many small purchases or withdrawals. It’s best to bring a stock of cash in dollars.
Returning home
Since you’ll use US dollars during your trip, there’s no issue exchanging any leftover money afterward—or simply saving it for another trip.
Budget
The cost of living in Belize is higher than in neighboring countries, including Mexico outside its hyper-tourist zones like Cancun. In fact, a budget for Belize is similar to what you’d spend in Riviera Maya, especially if staying in the Cayes. Plan for a minimum of 35–50 € per person per day (based on two people), and even more if you include island stays or activities like diving, which can significantly increase costs.
Note that, as with all countries using the US dollar or a currency pegged to it, fluctuations in the exchange rate—especially against the euro—can make the destination more or less expensive depending on the time of year and current rates.
