Types of Travel in El Salvador
Travel Themes
- Interests (rating ): Nature ; Adventure ; Culture ; Relaxation-holidays .
Nature-Adventure
Small in size but vast in diversity, blending ocean, mountains, lakes, and volcanoes, nature and "adventure" are two of the country’s strongest tourism draws, with eco-tourism also gaining ground recently.
Culture
While not widely known, El Salvador’s cultural heritage is rich and fascinating. It includes several pre-Columbian sites (Casa Blanca, San Andrés...), Mayan-era landmarks (Joya de Cerén, a UNESCO site), colonial-era towns and villages with distinctive architecture (Juayúa, San Miguel...), and more recent attractions like Perquin and its Revolution Museum. All in all, plenty to explore.
Relaxation-Holidays
Though El Salvador has its all-inclusive resort (Royal Decameron), its preferred beach destination (La Libertad), and is renowned for its surf spots, it isn’t the first place in the region that comes to mind for a relaxing holiday.
Independent Travel
Given the security concerns, the country is better suited to experienced travellers.
Organised Travel
All-Inclusive
While the options are limited, El Salvador’s Royal Decameron (in Salinitas) has long attracted a loyal following, mostly Quebecois and North American visitors.
