Climate and Weather in California
Climate Overview
Given California's size and diversity, it's only natural that its climate varies significantly by location and season. Broadly speaking, three factors influence the region's climate: topography, latitude, and a local peculiarity—the California Current. This cold mass flows along the coast from Canada to Mexico and is notably responsible for the frequent fogs that appear in various coastal areas. Of course, the climate differs greatly depending on whether you're near the ocean or in the highlands of the interior.
Overall, the California coast enjoys a temperate climate, thanks to the California Current. The weather is pleasant year-round, with relatively small seasonal variations (roughly 15 to 25°C on average) and even minimal differences between day and night. Winters are mild, and summers are far from scorching. However, a city like San Francisco has a microclimate where wind can cause sudden temperature drops, both day and night. Additionally, winter rains are relatively frequent there.
Inland, the climate primarily depends on altitude and latitude. Southern California is drier and hotter than the north. It's also in the south/southeast that desert areas are concentrated, the most famous being Death Valley with its nearly unbearable heat records. Conversely, the parks and mountains in the northern part of the state experience a continental climate with harsh winters and fairly hot summers, though nights remain cool.
Best Time to Visit California
While the ideal time to visit often depends on your destination, the shoulder seasons are generally the most pleasant if you plan to explore the entire state. Traveling between April and mid-June or in September-October helps avoid the scorching summer heat of desert areas and the winter chill of northern parks and mountains. That said, if you're only visiting the Pacific coast, climate may not be a major constraint.

Sea Temperature Throughout the Year
Clearly, the Pacific isn't the Caribbean, and the water temperature along the California coast bears no resemblance to that of Florida, especially as you head north toward San Francisco. In short, even in summer, the sea remains quite cool, rarely exceeding 20°C, even along the southern coast.
