Pour un voyage en famille ( deux enfants: 5 et 7 ans quand nous feront ce TDM), nous avions au début opté l'avion mais sac à dos avec nos affaires et ceux des enfants...ça me parait difficile (je suis admirative de ceux qui le font!)
Donc mon choix commence à se tourner vers un TDM avec véhicule.
Jai lu le post sur le 4x4 et le land 130 semble être bien. Mais il faut l'aménager soi-meme? Est-ce qu'un camping car ne serait pas mieux dans ce cas?
Questions prix, robustesse, pratique: lequel a votre préférence 4x4 ou camping car?

Nous pensons visiter europe-asie-amérique peut etre sur deux ans (selon l'état des finances!)
Il n'y aura guère que toi pour pouvoir choisir entre un 4x4 et un camping-car. Tout dépend en effet de tes priorités et de la façon dont tu conçois ce voyage.
Un 4x4 sera plus solide et te permettra d'élargir ton champ d'exploration, mais le confort sera limité.
Dans un camping-car, tu auras plus de place et de confort. Par contre, tu seras beaucoup plus limitée dans tes possibilités de déplacements.
Nous, par exemple, voulons aller au bout de toutes les pistes et n'attachons pas d'importance au confort. Nous ne concevons donc pas de partir sans transmission 4x4... Cela dit nous attachons par contre beaucoup d'importance à la discrétion. Nous ne voulons pas d'un véhicule voyant. Donc ni camping-car, ni Land, mais un fourgon doté d'une transmission 4x4.
Quant au prix, il variera plus en fonction de la qualité et de la complexité de l'équipement qu'en fonction du véhicule lui-même.

PS : en véhicule, deux ans pour visiter l'Europe, l'Asie et l'Amérique (du nord au sud ?) ce sera vraiment juste. Il faudra rouler beaucoup chaque jour. En général, ce genre de voyage se prévoit plutôt sur 3 ou 4 ans.

Nous revenons juste d'un grand tour d'Asie pendant un an, avec deux enfants qui avaient aussi 5 et 7 ans au moment du départ.
Comme vous nous nous sommes posés la question entre 4x4 et camping-car et avons longuement hésité... Finalement, nous avons choisi les deux, puisque nous avons opté pour un Land 130 équipé d'une cellule camping-car fixe, et c'est tout naturellement que nous avons baptisé ce véhicule notre "campingx4" ! (voir photo en pièce jointe, prise avant notre départ, et quelques autres sur notre site)
Son aménagement est aussi complet qu'un camping-car classique (frigo 130l, eau 160l, gaz 2x13kg, panneau solaire, chauffage et eau chaude, douches intérieure et extérieure, WC cassette, nombreux rangements grâce notamment à un double-plancher, ...), mais en plus compact (5, 72m sans le porte-vélo), bien que nous ayons 4 couchages permanents (1 lit double adulte + 2 lits superposés pour les enfants), plus la table qui se transforme en lit si nous avons des invités !
Et il est homologué camping-car avec une carte grise 5 places.
Autant j'aurai eu du mal à te répondre il y a un an, autant je peux affirmer maintenant que la transmission intégrale (4x4) est vraiment indispensable pour entreprendre ce genre de périple, quel que soit le type de véhicule (fourgon, camion, camping-car, voiture, ...) que tu choisis ; tu seras plus libre de tes mouvements et n'aura pas peur de tout casser quand les routes se transforment en pistes défoncées...
A défaut de 4x4, au moins un fourgon avec propulsion et chassis robuste, et garde au sol suffisante...
Un inconvénient quand même d'un véhicule comme le nôtre (ou d'un camping-car classique) par rapport à un 4x4 "normal" : sa hauteur ne lui permet pas d'entrer dans un container, ce qui rend sensiblement plus cher les traversées maritimes. C'est un point à prendre en compte pour un périple comme le vôtre.
Je vend un SAVIEM TP3 4X4 Fourgon de 1973 qui est une ancienne ambulance militaire. C'est un splendide véhicule avec seulement 16000KM d'origine. L'intérieur est aménagé avec deux banquettes escamotables sur les cotés. Les pneus sont neufs. Le véhicule possède un porte jerrycans garni et un porte outils. We’re planning a 4x4 trip from Belgium to Central Asia, passing through Georgia, Russia, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan.
For these countries, our national insurance obviously doesn’t cover the vehicle, so we’ll need to get local insurance.
Will it be a problem if the vehicle is registered under person A and the national insurance is under person B? Both A and B will be in the vehicle, and both will be listed as drivers on the insurance.
When we get the local insurance, if we again list A and B as drivers, does the order matter? Could we get stuck at the border for this reason?

Were they All Terrain tires or more "standard" ones like all-season tires, for example?

From your experience, is it necessary or even essential to book campsites in advance, or do you always manage to find a spot to pitch your tent?
We’ll also have the option to sleep in the car without pitching the tent.

We’re planning a 13-day family road trip in Morocco this July, with six people in a Toyota Prado 4x4 (renting in Marrakech).
We’ll alternate between bivouacking and small hotels/riads depending on the stops.

Our goal:
Atlas Mountains + desert + dunes + plateaus + valleys + a bit of coastline.
We’ll cover about 1,700 km in total.
We’re planning:
Bivouacking in the Chegaga/Iriki area
Flexible for the rest (booking the day before or same day)
Sand gear: traction plates, compressor, tow strap, roof rack
Questions:
Is the Zagora → Chegaga → Iriki → Foum Zguid crossing in July doable on our own (single vehicle, no guide)?
Are there any truly technical or risky sections between Chegaga and Iriki?
Does the overall itinerary seem manageable in 13 days without rushing?
Any suggestions for great bivouac spots or particularly interesting stops along this route?
The points on the route are provisional overnight stops. Some spots will include two nights in the same area.
We’re used to off-road driving, but not yet in the Moroccan desert.

Day 3: Sandwich Harbour – overnight in Swakopmund
Day 4: Kayaking with the seals + the living dunes – overnight in Swakopmund
Day 5: Moon Landscape, Henties Bay + Cape Cross – overnight at White Lady Lodge in Brandberg
Does this itinerary seem realistic to you? Is Cape Cross really worth the trip? If I had to choose between Cape Cross and kayaking with the seals, which would you recommend?

I’d love to visit Gonarezhou National Park—I see there are two sectors: the Mwenezi Region in the south and the area around the Runde River in the north. I’m leaving in November for about a month with the goal of reaching Senegal via Mauritania. I’m looking for a rental company (or several) that offers single-cab 4x4 pick-ups with a fitted camper cell for two people. I’m specifically after a vehicle with an indoor shower for extra comfort ;)

My trip to South Africa is starting to take shape.
However, I'm struggling to figure out the route through Kruger Park. I can't seem to find the information I need about getting around.
Coming from the south, I plan to arrive on Day 1 in the early afternoon at Malelane or Crocodile Bridge.
Do some shopping in Malelane (or Crocodile Bridge main area) and stay overnight outside the park.
Leave on Day 2 at 5 AM for the park. Explore the southern part of the park.
Stay overnight around Skukuza or Lower Sabie. (We don’t want to stay in one of the park’s big camps. We’re looking for a lodge around 200 €.
Head out on Day 3 for a self-drive safari, maybe as far as Orpen.
We’d like to stay in a private reserve on nights 4 and 5.
We’re not sure which one or how to get into a private reserve. Do we need to exit Kruger Park?
On Day 5, we’d like to leave to visit Blyde Canyon (on Day 6).

Was the journey doable and safe?
