Are walking poles allowed to reach Machu Picchu?

hi everyone, I’m a bit confused: we (3 adults in our sixties) are planning to do the Inca Trail to reach Machu Picchu on foot. Many websites say that walking poles are banned, but the agency we’ve chosen to go with offers pole rental! What’s the deal? Are the allowed poles the ones with a tip protector? Thanks for your answers! Alain

Hi, Just out of curiosity. - Who bans these walking poles and why? - If the agency provides or rents walking poles, where’s the issue?

A point of answer in France: It’s the sheer number of them that’s the problem. I’ve come across this kind of ban in my area too.

Okay, thanks. I never would’ve imagined something like that, especially in Peru! I didn’t use them until recent years. I do have rubber tips, which I think are only used for transport. In that case, if it’s an issue on-site in Peru, you can just bring your own rubber tips. Besides, if you’re packing your own poles in a suitcase, it’s best to put the tips on.

Hello,

On the Machu Picchu site itself, walking sticks are banned (except for elderly or disabled people), but not on the Inca Trail.

This is part of the long list of restrictions imposed on visitors to the Inca citadel—from the obvious ones like climbing or graffitiing the walls, to the more annoying ones like bringing food, and even the most unusual ones like... practicing nudism! !
