Choosing between Jaffna and the east coast in April (Sri Lanka)

Hi there. We’re spending a month in Sri Lanka in March, and we’ll have one week left after leaving Polonnaruwa. We’re torn between spending it in the Jaffna region or on the east coast between Batticaloa and Trincomalee. We’re divers, so the east coast appeals to us for snorkeling, beaches, and lagoons—but it seems like late March might not be the best time for that coast. What do you think? As for Jaffna, the culture of the region, its more authentic feel since it’s less touristy, and the offshore islands all appeal to us too—but it seems far from the rest of the country and harder to access. We have to choose because we won’t be able to visit both sides, and I’d love to hear your thoughts. Thanks, Marie

Hi Marie-Jo,

If you're aiming for diving, I’m afraid that at the end of March on the east coast, visibility will be really poor and the currents still strong. It’s still better on the southwest coast. I talk about it here with a firsthand experience: https://www.tongsetsrilanka.com/plonger-au-sri-lanka-passikudah-cote-sud-et-ouest

Even though the east coast and Jaffna are gorgeous, I think I’d head south at that time and save the north and east for another trip :-)

I’m also sharing an article with all the travelers’ weather feedback from recent years to help you out.

Have a great day! Caroline

Hi there,

I won’t weigh in on the weather since I haven’t visited Sri Lanka during this season.

That said, if you’ve got a week left to plan, it’s more than enough time to head up to Jaffna. Sure, it’s a bit off the beaten path compared to other spots in the country, but it’s not true that it’s hard to get to. Buses and trains serve the north of the island, and I’ll say it again—one week is no problem at all.

Hello,

Late March is a good time to try the east coast—it’s the start of the season, and the sea is calm. Big plus: most tourists will be in the south.

For diving, there are some really nice spots on the east coast, like Batticaloa and Passikudah, known for their wrecks. In Trincomalee, there’s a cool spot at the foot of the Koneswaram Temple, and Pigeon Island is famous for snorkeling, but honestly, if you’re divers, you might be disappointed by this island.

As for the Jaffna peninsula, it’s definitely off the beaten path and worth exploring. These are our two favorite regions on the island, so it’s tough to choose—but if you’ve already done the beach scene, head north and come back down via Mannar.

Have a great time! 🙂

Hello, There’s a ferry to connect Jaffna in India from Nagapattinam in Sri Lanka (the Subhan). I’m hesitating to do it with 3 friends—I can’t find the trains or buses to get to the ferry. If you have any interesting info, could you share it? Gaston
