J'ai passe une semaine à New York City en septembre 2012, je vous livre qques infos pratiques afin d'affiner vos prepa et budgets
Je ne vais pas vous faire une liste de ce qu'il y a à voir, y a deja eu plein de post dessus
De meme, je vous fais grace de photos maintes fois postées genre "ma pomme à jfk", "ma pomme sur liberty island", "ma pomme en haut de l'ESB" , sur la 5th avenue vous avez un Apple store et tout ce qu'il faut dedans
1 AVION
AIR FRANCE etait le moins cher et hors periode tendue (propice au greve) donc AF
aucun probleme à l'aller ni au retour sauf une frayeur à JFK ou la borne nous voyait sur liste d'attente mais resolue sur le champs au comptoir
A380 à l'aller et A33O au retour
2 Durée
On est arrive un samedi soir et depart un vendredi à 16H50 soit 5J1/2 ce qui nous semble une bonne durée, plus aurait été trop à moins de sortir de la ville car on etouffait un peu
- pour les incontournables, on aurait pu faire sur 4 Jours 1/2 (ceci dit on a zappé les musées)
3 Aeroport / NY
Perso, je suis un provincial pas fana du métro mais là, juste à la sortie, un grand panneau "AirTrain", la queue au taxi, donc on fonce
On prend l airtrain qui s'arrete à tous les terminaux et on descend au terminus JAMAICA STATION, on arrive a des barrieres pour payer avec bornes- on peut selectionner sa langue dont le français, il accepte cb et cash; il y a des agents pour vous aider si besoin
il y a 2 options -> achat ticket airtrain ou metro card....Si vous souhaiter l'option ticket "airtrain+metro", selectionner dans l'ordre > metro card/buy a new card/regular..../air train+subway = 7,25$
Ensuite prendre ligne bleue E direction Downtown (demander si besoin)
Environ 1 heure de metro, descendre à pennsylvania station si vous etes vers times square
Au retour -> achat ticket single 2,5$ ligne "E" direction "Uptown", descendre a Stuphin boulevard/jFK puis air train (5$)
C'est tres facile !
J1 Dimanche
Messe en gospel à Harlem
First corinthians baptist church : on a choisi la messe de 8H, on est arrive à 7H30; les portes sont ouvertes avec 2 personnes à l'entrée; je demande si on peut rentrer pour le service et on nous repondra de maniere tres chaleureuse que nous sommes "very allowed" donc visiblement pas de problemes
L'acceuil est vraiment cordial, plusieurs fois des membres de la communauté nous salue, les gens ont l'air heureux de se retrouver
Je pense que jusqu'à 7H45, on peut rentrer sans déranger; le sanctuaire est plein et il y a +/- 30 etrangers,
Humainement, ce sera une super experience au milieu d'une communaute qui semble heureuse ensemble
Le service est assez long 2H15 au total, la preche dure au moins 1 heure et ma voisine, tres studieuse, prends des notes pendant le sermon...
En sortant, il y a une queue de 50 metres pour le service suivant, essentiellement des touristes
Brunch Chez "Sylvia's" Là aussi il y a la queue a partir de 11H (ouverture)
Apres midi Central park
Traversée du nord au sud ; location de barque à rame 12$ de l'heure; 1 heure est suffisante
J2 Lundi
Staue de la liberte
Vu que la veille, on s'est endormi à 18H00 (gloups!!!), on est au pit à 7h30, billets achetes sur internet; on ira faire un tour au charging bull, un petit café et on ira faire la queue vers 8H10 sans se presser et là, un ranger vient nous voir, nous demande d'ou on vient, "Ha oui, la France, vous venez visiter NYC" "oui, c'est ça" et en nous quittant, il nous lance un "Thank you, thank you for my job " et nous laissant ahuris....ça s'appelle un choc culturel !!!
Au retour, vers 12H, il y a au bas mot 300 metres de queue....peut etre plus...donc à vous de voir, grasse mat or not grass mat
Apres midi
Lower manhattan; Wall street, st paul Chappell (ou il y a une fete à laquelle on aurait pu se meler sans problemes mais pas trop d'emotion forcement..)
Memorial 9/11, billets pris sur internet; on est rentre à 15H35 pour un rdv indiqué sur le billet à 16H, pas de problemes avec les sacs à dos
Balade à South street sea port -> tres sympa, genre pier39 à San Francisco mais plus calme (bars et centre commercial sympa)
On serait bien reste là mais il y a le brooklyn bridge à traverser
Attention le pont est en travaux donc vues un peu gachees
Apres on se "perd" dans brooklyn, et on mange dans un resto local au pif, tres sympa et bien en plus (clarks 80 Clarks st brooklyn)
J3 Mardi Mid Town
Empire State Building-> arrivée à 8H20, il n'y a personne; super car il y a sur place tout le matos pour gerer la foule, alors que là, on passe au pas de course
L'audio guide nous est proposé avec une carte/plan pour 10$; sans hesiter, je le recommande fortement, c'est vraiment interessant
Suite visite -> gare, onu, chrysler building
Repas sur 1er, dans un resto local au pif encore (ritz dinner 1133 First ave )
Apres-midi -> 5nd Avenue shopping ras (sauf pour ma CB, snif..)
J4 Mercredi Les quartiers
Chinatown, little Italy, Soho (magasin VAN'S pour ceux que ça interesse ouvert à 11H) Greenwich Village
repas Corner bistrot (Cadre tres moyen, hamburger "epais" servi dans une assiette à dessert en plastique; pas cher 16$ pour 2 hamburgers mais on a plus de place pour un cup cake a "magnolia bakery"
On finit la visite par la High Line; ça c'est vraiment sympa;une voie ferree desaffectée transformée en voie pietonne verte à 10 metres au dessus de la rue avec banc, bain de soleil en bois
rambarde transparente avec banc pour s'assoir et regarder defiler les voitures....Incontournable !! Depart Gansevoort st, fin 30 st
J5 Jeudi Mid Town again
Matin Circle line Quai 83 au bout 42 ST - 3 heures - 37$ par personne
le trajet initial est de faire le tour complet de Manhattan mais arrivé à hauteur de harlem, obligé de faire demi-tour due à une interdiction des autorites fluviales (??)
C'est sympa, un poil long et on est déçu de n'avoir pas vu le tour complet de la ville
Repas le midi vite fait d'un bagel (+/- 5$), je voulais en essayer un avant de partir
Apres-midi , on va faire du shopping au magasin "the north face", ça c'est le shopping que j'aime!!!:-))) puis on rejoint central park, dakota building, Maine memorial
Mais avant, il y a un endroit que l'on a pas le droit d'éviter "the levain bakery" ; 1er challenge, la trouver, pas evident c'est minuscule dans une ville ou tout est gigantesque mais la qualité de ses cookies est inversement proportionnelle à la taille de la boutique
Ils sont enormes, chers (4ou5$), delicieux, fondants, on a essaye les Dark chocolate, je les ai elus "best in the world"
J6 Derniere matinee ( J'avais prevu Brooklyn mais un peu loin et on a un peu trainé)
Petit dernier tour : la poste , ESB puis times square de jour, on l'avait pas vu !!!
Transport
Mis à part le trajet pour l'aeroport, on a opté pour la formule taxi le matin + marche, et là , je peux vous dire que l'on a marche; les chaussures de rando, c'était pas du superflu!!!

J'ai pas aborde l'hotel car ce voyage etait pour un anniversaire de mariage, on avait le budget et j'ai donc cherche quelque chose de bien placé et confortable
C'est pas les critéres pour avoir des prix à New york !!!
On a été au "TRYP 345 W 35 st " : propre, design, super literie, calme (contre un commissariat, ça aide!!), à 10 minutes à pieds de times square, tres bien mais pas cadeau, of course 😕
Derniere recommandation : ne suivez pas à la lettre les avis du "guide du routard" , vous risqueriez d'etre déçu ; meme si ça reste un bon guide, parfois, ils emettent des avis ou jugements sur des restos ou des magasins pour le moins subjectifs 😠
Voilà 5 jours bien utilisés et remplis ! Tu y étais à quelles dates ? J'y étais 5 jours en septembre aussi mais... je n'en ai jamais assez, personnellement. Ca me semble toujours trop court ! Surtout quand il fait mauvais... Quand je vois qu'il y fait un temps de rêve depuis une semaine, ça me fait râler ! 😏

Vive le décalage horaire 😎 On élimine tous les groupes et les américains donc ça laisse de la marge pour les autres 😛

suite à mon séjour en mai à New York -> c'est pour mieux apprecier le calme des plaines de l'ouest ?
Plutôt pour aller voir notre fille qui s'y est installée depuis plus de 2 ans.
Si cela t'intéresse, j'ai fait un album Picasa de ces 5 jours passés à New York (pas uniquement pour visiter car notre fille déménageait), il contient des photos classiques et d'autres moins (photographier en ville était une nouveauté pour moi qui ne photographie d'habitude que des paysages, des curiosités géologiques, du rock art et des ruines indiennes).
Mais après ces 5 jours, nous sommes allés passer 3 semaines dans le Southwest pour revenir "aux fondamentaux"
l'acceuil était vraiment chaleureux -> tu avais été à la meme eglise ??
Oui à la même église et à la même heure.
Une anecdote : alors qu'il est bien évidemment demandé d'éteindre son téléphone portable / smartphone pendant la messe, à un moment donné des dizaines de personnes autour de moi ont sorti et allumé leur Iphone (et équivalent) et se sont mis à tapoter dessus. La surprise passée, j'ai compris qu'ils avaient une application "Bible" et qu'ils étaient en train d'afficher le passage de la Bible que le pasteur avait annoncé pour le lire et le commenter. La vision de toutes ces personnes dans la pénombre regardant fixement leur smartphone et dont seul le visage était éclairé par la lumière blafarde de l'écran affichant du texte sur un fond blanc m'a paru assez surréaliste...
Le Dark chocolate est le meilleur ccokie que j'aie jamais mangé ! -> et vu le nombre de fois ou tu as été aux USA, tu as du en gouté pas mal...
En campant la plupart du temps au milieu du wilderness je n'en mange pas tant que cela.

De mon côté, j'ai bien aimé ton report illustré sur NYC, dommage que la météo n'aie pas toujours été de la partie.

Elle a eu la chance (mais a aussi fait tout ce qui fallait pour) d'être embauchée dans la société américaine où elle avait fait son stage de fin d'études. En se mettant à la fenêtre du plateau de l'immeuble où elle travaille, elle aurait d'ailleurs pu te faire un signe quand tu as pris ta photo vers Central Park du haut de Top of the World. Ceci dit, la vie à NYC n'est pas toujours facile et le logement au coeur de Manhattan est hors de prix (mais pour l'instant c'est là qu'elle veut absolument rester).

Merci pour ce retour qui retient mon attention : nous visiterons NY durant une semaine, fin avril début mai.
Nous arriverons aussi un samedi soir et j'ai prévu sensiblement le même programme pour les premiers jours, pour mettre à profit le décalage horaire.

8h30 - 12h, c'est le temps nécessaire pour la traversée AR et j'imagine un moment aux pieds de Miss Liberty ? -->> j'ai fait la statue+ le musée de l'immigration en prenant mon temps
je m'en doutais un peu, mais tes photos sont magnifiques !! l'oeil du photographe....c'est ça qui fait la différence
Si tu as des infos ou des liens pour avoir des infos sur les eglises d'harlem, ça m'interesse; ce sont des chretiens ? sont-ils consideres comme secte ou approchant ?? Dans le sanctuaire, il y a bien une croix mais stylisée, sans jesus dessus , et puis ça nous a semble tellement different d'une messe "classique", beaucoup plus informel..surprenant

Désolé, je ne suis pas spécialiste de ce sujet mais le peu que je sache c'est qu'il s'agit généralement d'églises d'obédiance protestante avec un esprit communautaire basé sur la religion mais aussi sur des aspects ethniques ou sociaux mais que l'on ne peut pas parler de secte.

Still working on the program.

Round trip around the area via Flagstaff and Williams, or the Grand Canyon (already done) – we’ll decide on the spot.

Old Route 66 in the city;
Big Texas Ranch Steak 😏.
Dallas:
JFK Museum;
Perot Museum;
West End district.
And through it all – the road, the road, and more road!!!
We’ll adapt day by day based on our mental and physical state (we’re not exactly spring chickens).
Hello everyone! Really damaged due to flooding caused by runoff after forest fires (a total mess!), does anyone in this friendly forum have any updates on the Apache Trail between Apache Junction and Roosevelt Dam? Is there still a section of the road that’s tough to navigate?
We're leaving at the end of June and will be driving the route between Buffalo and Cody. We’ve already booked our accommodations and a rodeo in Cody, but during the day, we’ll be driving between the two and I’m unsure about the itinerary.
Which route do you think is the most pleasant, interesting, or scenic between:
- The northern route via Highway 14 with Sheridan, Lowell, etc.
- The southern route with Highways 16/20/14, passing by Loaf Mountain Overlook, Powder River Pass, Ten Sleep Canyon...
We’ll be in a car, so we should be able to drive on any road.

I’m almost done planning our September road trip. After our 3-night visit to Sequoia, we’ll have a stopover night in Coalinga (to break up the drive). We’ll be staying two nights in Monterey and would like to stop along the way to visit one side of Pinnacles National Park. We’re torn between the West entrance and the East entrance, and we’d like to do a short hike of no more than 2 hours since we don’t want to arrive too late in Monterey.
This park is split into two distinct zones with no connection between them, and the mileage from Coalinga to Monterey is pretty much the same for both. Which area do you recommend visiting—east or west? And which route is the most scenic?
I’ve spotted two short hikes:
- East: Moses Spring to Rim Trail Loop
- West: Balconies Cliffs Cave Loop
Has anyone been there, or do you have another hike to suggest?

After our first trip as a young couple to the West in 2007 (yes, that doesn’t make us any younger!), we’re planning to go back in 2028, but this time as a family of four! (We have two boys who’ll be 5½ and 13 years old in the summer of 2028.)
Our plan is to combine a few big cities (SF and LA, maybe San Diego) with national parks and state parks, mostly!
Ideally, we’d like to leave at the end of June and head back to France around July 19–20, so we can enjoy the first week of the Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
Since we already did the "loop" in 2007, there are must-see places we absolutely want to revisit—and especially share with our kids: Bryce Canyon, Yosemite, and above all, the Grand Canyon, which is still the most incredible thing I’ve ever seen on Earth!
On the other hand, some places didn’t leave a big impression on us for various reasons, so we’re not making them a priority: Antelope Canyon, Monument Valley, for example.
We’re planning ahead, but might as well be smart about it😏
Do you have any tips for a fun and doable itinerary over about 20–25 days with kids, without rushing?

Just a quick question about King Canyon and Sequoia National Park.
Before our night in Miramonte, we plan to visit King Canyon. The next stop will be two nights in Three Rivers to explore Sequoia National Park. I wanted to go all the way to Roaring River Falls on the King Canyon Scenic Byway and then turn back to head to Miramonte. Since we’re coming from Oakhurst, Google Maps says it’s 300 km and 5 hours of driving. Since we also want to hike to see the sequoias (Big Stump Area and Grand Grove) before tackling the King Canyon Scenic Byway, the timing’s going to be tight. How far do you recommend going before turning back to miss as few points of interest as possible on the King Canyon Scenic Byway? Thanks for your advice, and have a great evening!

We’ll be alternating between house swaps, motels, and campgrounds. I’ve booked all the accommodations (except the campground at Bryce since sunset bookings open only 14 days in advance) and the first activities, as well as the most touristy ones.

I’d like to travel along I-15N from San Diego to Las Vegas with my mom, who’s 67. We’ve explored Northern California and the California Coast over the past two years and now want to continue through the desert.
There are several attractions along the way:
- Mormon Rocks
- Desert Discovery Center and visit the Old Woman meteorite
- Joshua Tree National Park
- Mojave Desert
- Mojave National Preserve
- Anza-Borrego Desert State Park
- Silverwood Lake
My mom has back issues that prevent her from hiking or walking on trails with elevation changes. Is it possible to visit these places by car, or are the routes flat enough?
I’d love for her to experience the desert with an itinerary adapted to her condition. I’m also open to other points of interest that aren’t mentioned. We have 3-4 days for the trip, so we’re not in a rush—just want to explore.
I’d love to take a road trip and visit Nova Scotia. I’d appreciate some info on the best cities to see and the most interesting spots. The trip should last about 10 to 15 days, staying in hotels or motels. Thanks in advance!

**Viewpoints on the East Side:**
Are most of the viewpoints (Balancing Rock, Granite Cave, Bonsai Rock, etc.) right by the road, or do you have to hike to reach them?
**Donner Memorial State Park:**
Is it worth making a detour to Truckee to visit this park and the Truckee historic downtown?

I’m a total USA addict. I’ve already done several road trips, including the East Coast and West Coast.
I’m here today because I’m planning to go back for another road trip on the West Coast. Possibly with one of my sisters and a couple of friends. It’s still just a plan for now, but I’m working on an itinerary in the meantime. Ideally, I’d leave in 2026, but I don’t have the exact dates yet—maybe April-May or September-October.
My last trip to the West Coast was in September 2014. We went for 2 weeks, but this time it’d be 3 weeks. What made me want to go back was simply a colleague who just left today. As I’m writing this, he’s on the plane. I’m so happy for him, but now all I can think about is going back.
Since I recently went to NY, I noticed that prices have really gone up. I assume the same is true for the West Coast? For 2 people over 3 weeks, what budget should I expect? We’re the type to watch our spending and find great tips.
I think we’ll arrive in San Francisco like the first time and leave from either Los Angeles or Las Vegas.

I assume many of you already know, but the America the Beautiful annual pass, which was $80, will increase to $250 starting January 1, 2026.
So if you're planning to travel before the end of December 2026, it's in your best interest to buy your pass in December 2025, since it will still cost $80 and be valid until the end of December 2026 if you purchase it in December 2025.
This price increase only applies to non-U.S. residents.
Additionally, for those who planned to visit just one park, a $100 surcharge per person will apply to access a list of 11 national parks...
For example, if there are 4 of you in a car, you’ll have to pay $35 + $400,
which comes to $435 to visit one of the 11 parks on the list (I don’t have all of them... Bryce, Zion, Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Grand Teton, etc.).
Total madness.
The goal is to push people who only visit one park into buying the annual pass.
Last point: free entry days are over for non-residents!

We just finished 9 days in the American West and wanted to share our experience because we had an amazing time.
I know some of you might ask, why use an agency? Honestly, we didn’t really feel like doing all the driving and planning, especially since we didn’t know the area at all. And since our English isn’t great, having French-speaking guides was a big comfort.
We found Emmanuelle and Isabelle, and wow, they were fantastic. It was just the two of us with them, so it was a truly VIP, ultra-personalized experience. We loved it so much that we’re already planning to come back next year to explore other areas with them. I think we’ve caught the American West bug—it’s all we can think about, and we can’t wait to return.
