hi, I'm having trouble getting an idea of what the weather's like in this region in winter. I'm thinking of going there the first week of January after spending New Year's Day in Madrid. Is that a good idea? Is it pleasant to walk around the small towns at this time of year? And by car? thanks a lot

It makes sense that you can’t get a clear idea of the weather in Extremadura in early January, because it really fluctuates, and it also depends on which part of Extremadura you're in—north or south, plains or higher altitude.

In the south (Badajoz, Mérida), you can have Mediterranean weather, like in Seville, with "Christmas on the balcony," around fifteen degrees, a light jacket in the morning and evening, and even sitting outside in a t-shirt at midday.

In the north (Cáceres, Trujillo, Jerte Valley), it’s a dry continental climate, and it can get very cold. It can even snow in the mountains.

Basically, you can experience all kinds of weather—what’s unusual is the rain.

Extremadura is a beautiful but rugged region, with stunning landscapes (several "Sierras" in the north and south) and a rich heritage (highly recommended: Cáceres, one of Spain’s most beautiful cities; Trujillo, Pizarro’s hometown; Guadalupe; the Yuste Monastery; Mérida and its magnificent amphitheater). The Vera Valley, which connects to the province of Toledo, combines heritage and lovely scenery.

On the other hand, rent a car to get there—otherwise, it might be tricky to get around once you're there.
