C’est ma première discussion sur un forum ; j’organise un voyage d’un mois ( 3 pers- mon mari, ma sœur et moi.) aux USA, d’Est (de la famille près de New York) en Ouest(de la famille à Sacramento) pour le mois d’Octobre.
je souhaiterais que ceux et celles qui ont déjà fait le circuit que je prévois me donnent leur avis : n’est-il pas trop long, un autre itinéraire serait-il préférable, est-il vraiment indispensable de réserver nos chambres car nous aimons bien ne pas être tenus d’arriver à une date précise pour cause de réservation si l’endroit présent nous plait beaucoup, etc, etc …
Si vous avez des bonnes adresses d’hôtels (moyen) sur New York et les autres villes dans les parcs, location de voitures, etc……..
J’ai déjà noté la galère pour les visas c’est pourquoi je commence maintenant.
Départ de Lyon le 5 Octobre et arrivée à NY le 5 également
Départ le 12 octobre pour Albuquerque à 10h : il semblerait qu’il y ait un changement à l’escale d’ Atlanta – arrivée à Albuquerque à 15.h 10
Soit nous louons une voiture, soit nous allons à Santa Fé avec les nombreuses navettes et louons une voiture à santa fé où nous restons une nuit. Et à partir de là nous partons à l’aveuglette pour les locations ; cette solution nous permet de nous arrêter là nous voulons et quand nous voulons. Il ne faudra pas arriver trop tard pour chercher un hôtel mais je pense qu’il est difficile de prévoir le temps et les kilomètres que nous ferons par jour.
Voici le parcours que nous envisageons :
Après Santa Fé, Taos, Durango, Mesa Verde, Monument Valley (peut-être le canyon de Chelley) le Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon, Zion et Las Vegas.
Après Las Vegas( 2 nuits ?) la Death Valley, Sequoia Park puis Monterey et San Francisco le 27 octobre soit 15 jours depuis Albuquerque .Ca me semble une bonne découverte de la région.
Nous avons trouvé une agence intéressante question prix pour les vols AR. au départ de Lyon, mais j’accepte tous les conseils. Merci à toutes et tous.

Vous allez faire un très beau voyage, c'est sûr. Un mois, c'est bien, à condition de bien préparer son itinéraire en fonction de ce que l'on aime ou n'aime pas.
En octobre, vous n'avez pas besoin de réserver vos hébergements à l'avance mais il est tout de même préférable d'arriver relativement tôt (vers 17 h maxi). Cela laisse ainsi beaucoup plus de liberté (avance ou retard dans le road book prévu, endroit on l'on a envie de rester plus, etc...)
Pour les adresses d'hôtels dans NY, faites une recherche sur ce forum, il y a déjà eu des posts là-dessus. Moi je ne connais pas encore.
Dans tout le Grand Circle, il y a vraiment beaucoup de possibilités pour dormir. Donc pas de problème. Si tu veux, je suis à ta disposition pour t'indiquer nos différents points de chute.

A Las Vegas, 2 jours c'est peut-être pas nécessaire, quoi que.... Nous sommes arrivés vers midi, ce qui nous a permi d'avoir un aperçu de la ville de jour ; une très longue soirée/nuit a suivi et le lendemain nous sommes partis dans l'après-midi en direction de Zion (nuit à Hurricane).

Bonjour Tatie, je suis rudement contente d'avoir une réponse car je ne maitrise pas vraiment cette nouvelle technologie qu'est internet et je craignais de m'être mal exprimée.
Merci pour les renseignements . je vais calculer de plus près le kilométrage entre les canyons que nous avons l'intention de voir. J'ai aussi lu qu'entre la death valley et le séquoia park il faut 6 h. de route je crois donc que je l'éliminerai; est-ce que tu connais ? Pour las vegas nous avons juste l'intention de voir la ville, vu le prix du séjour je crois que pour flamber dans les casinos ce sera pour bien plus tard.
J'abite à Vagnas tout à fait au sud de l'ardèche à la limité du gard. Aujourd'hui il fait 15° sur notre terrasse mais moi je trouve ça polaire, question d'habitude, toi tu dois trouver ça presque trop chaud ?

De toutes façons, si tu fais Death Valley, il faut faire le tour du massif de Sequoia quand même, donc pour rejoindre San Francisco ou Monterey, ça te fera une halte sans avoir 10h00 de route d'un coup !

Quelques remarques/questions/commentaires sur votre beau voyage !
D'abord l'affaire du passeport et du visa : en principe, à partir de mai prochain....les passeports français émis seront de type "biométrique", donc n'obligeront pas à un visa ! Vu que vous y allez en octobre...il me semble "rentable" d'attendre ?? Peut être demander confirmation à votre Préfecture pour le mois de mai ??
Ensuite billet avion : je suppose que vous aurez un billet Paris-NYC-Albuquerque//San Francisco-Paris. Avez vous demandé à votre agence un devis "parallèle" avec PAR-NYC//SFO-PAR plus un billet aller simple sur une Cie low cost de NYC à Albuquerque, genre Jet Blue ou SouthWest qui vendent cela aux alentours de 140$. A moins bien sur que Delta, via Atlanta, soit assez compétitive ?? Mais à comparer on ne risque rien !!
Pour la voiture : c'est une chose pour laquelle vous avez grand intéret à "prévoir", donc à la louer depuis ici !
Les plus compétitifs, avec une formule TOUT compris (assurances surtout) sont pour le moment www.holidayautos.fr et www.autoescape.com (situés à Pertuis (84) !! Ils travaillent tous deux avec le loueur Alamo, moins cher -avec les mêmes voitures !- que les grands noms connus ! Et puis enfin, au vu du chemin à faire....n'hésitez pas à prendre une "full size" ! vos reins vous en sauront gré !
pour votre parcours : vos 15 jours vont être bien occupés !, de ce fait j'hésite à vous suggérer l'ajout de Moab et des parcs alentours ! Pourtant ça vaut le détour ...et remplacerait avantageusement le Canyon de Chelly ...mais ce n'est que mon avis perso !
Si vous faites Taos-Durango n'hésitez pas à prendre la route 160 de Walsenburg à Mesa Verde car elle est superbe (attention en octobre il y fait franchement pas chaud !!)
En octobre, réservation des motels superflue mais arrangez vous pour arriver à Las Végas du dimanche soir au jeudi, car les tarifs Ve/Sa sont souvent triples !!

Bonsoir, J'avais fait un premier projet mais je pense qu'il va falloir que j'apporte quelques modif grâce aux conseils et suggestions de vous tous; je vous tiendrai au courant.
Pour le passeport j'ai téléphoné en début de semaine à ma préfecture qui m'a pas pu me donner une date approximative pour le passeport biométrique, c'est vrai que j'ai pensé à attendre en raison des frais que le visa + trajet occasionne. Je vais rappeler dans quelque temps, de toutes façons je n'ai pas encore mon passeport donc il n'y a pas d'urgence pour demander le visa.

Bonjour, après la lecture de votre message quelques question : y-a-t-il des revues plus intéressantes que d'autres et des cartes mieux faites que d'autres. Pour l'instant j'ai le routard et le michelin et de la doc prise à l'agence mais c'est naturellement insuffisant. Avant que j'achète pouvez-vous me répondre.
Par quelle source avez-vous appris que le passeport biométrique "serait" réalisable en mai. Préfecture ou sur un site ? Je peaufine au fur et à mesure des réponses je commence à être un peu stressée, ce qui n'est pas dans mes habitudes.

juste un petit grain de sel ajouter à ce torrent de bons conseils: il serait effectivement dommage que tu rates moab, voir même arches... enf ait il y a tellement de parcs à voir qu'il est difficile d'en éliminer au profit d'autres... Nous avons fait la majorité des parcs de l'ouest en 2 mois... (de Las Vegas à Yellow stone) et tous valaient le détour... néamoins, si tu veux choisir, je peux t'envoyer des photos de payage des différents parcs où tu souhaites aller, histoire de te donner une idée...
Quant à Las Véga, si tu y passes vraiment (une nuit suffit) il est dommage de ne pas jouer: d'une part parce que tu peux jouer des 5 ou 10 cents donc vraiment pas grand chose (en jouant que des 10 cents j'ai gagné 500$!!!) enfin moi je ne suis pas joueuse mais je n'ai pas regretté de gouter à l'ambiance de chcun de ces casino... Inévitables aussi les spectable de jets d'eau ou de bateau pirates!!!!
Bref, ville à voir mais pas incontournable non plus!!!
Enfin bref, pour les photos ou autres conseils, n'hésites pas mais que sur l'ouest!!!

Pour les cartes, guides et autres docs papier : avec le guide vert Michelin plus le Routard, la base est solide ! Question cartes routières : les "bonnes" librairies ou maison de la presse ont (ou peuvent te commander) les cartes et atlas Michelin : pour l'Ouest US et Canada, la carte N° 493 est parfaite. Il y a aussi l'atlas routier Amérique nord de Michelin à peu près format 21x27cm à spirale, très pratique pour le copilote.....
En partant avec ça en main, il sera très facile là-bas d'acheter les cartes Rand McNally dans à peu près n'importe quel drug-store ou station service. Elles ne sont pas plus précises que les Michelin, mais ont le mérite d'être éditées "une par Etat" ! Il existe aussi un atlas routier Rand McNally, avec une page par Etat, plus bien des plans des villes et des parcs nationaux.
A ma connaissance les McNally se trouvent moins facilement hors de Paris ! Eh oui la centralisation !!
Mais les sites donnés par Fabienne vont te donner une bonne idée !
Pour les parcs nationaux, les plans détaillés, petit journal du parc etc sont donnés, avec le sourire du préposé...à toutes les entrées de parc !
A ce sujet : prévoir l'achat du National Parks Pass (50$ pour un an, le chauffeur et les passagers de la voiture) à l'entrée du 1er park rencontré. Ensuite toutes les entrées sont gratuites.
Pour le passeport bio : ma source pour sa sortie en mai, c'est une déclaration du ministère de l'Intérieur du 13 janvier, reprise dans certains journaux. Rien vu/lu/entendu d'autre depuis cela !!
Même avis que Fabienne : pas de stress ! il reste plein de temps pour cette préparation....et puis n'hésite pas à demander ici !! Bien des habitués de ce forum ont contracté le virus de l'Ouest.... 😏

j'ai déjà les images des catalogues dans la tête, il me reste les itinéraires avec les cartes. il y a aussi de bonnes librairies à Lyon (plus près pour moi) et l'agence vdm (à Lyon) a un rayon de cartographie qui m'avait semblé bien achalandé quand j'y suis allée donc maintenant Y'A KA.

Comme le post précédent, je te conseille, après Monument Valley, d'aller à Moab, où il y a de superbes choses à voir, comme Arches Land et Canyon Land, Capitol Reefs vaut le déplacement et tu te retrouves à Bryce Canyon puis Zion et Las Vegas! Pour Las Vegas, c'est une question de gout mais la visite des différents casinos vaut vraiment le coup, non pas pour les jeux mais surtout pour l'architecture de la démesure!!(Le Louxor, le Venitian, le Caesar Palace, Treasure Island, le Mirage et j'en oublie!!)
Aprés, Vallée de la mort(incontournable), Yosemite et San francisco!
Attention, selon la periode, Yosemite est fermé par le neige(nous sommes partis de death valley avec 35° et neige à Yosemite!!)

Hello everyone! Really damaged due to flooding caused by runoff after forest fires (a total mess!), does anyone in this friendly forum have any updates on the Apache Trail between Apache Junction and Roosevelt Dam? Is there still a section of the road that’s tough to navigate?
We're leaving at the end of June and will be driving the route between Buffalo and Cody. We’ve already booked our accommodations and a rodeo in Cody, but during the day, we’ll be driving between the two and I’m unsure about the itinerary.
Which route do you think is the most pleasant, interesting, or scenic between:
- The northern route via Highway 14 with Sheridan, Lowell, etc.
- The southern route with Highways 16/20/14, passing by Loaf Mountain Overlook, Powder River Pass, Ten Sleep Canyon...
We’ll be in a car, so we should be able to drive on any road.

I’m almost done planning our September road trip. After our 3-night visit to Sequoia, we’ll have a stopover night in Coalinga (to break up the drive). We’ll be staying two nights in Monterey and would like to stop along the way to visit one side of Pinnacles National Park. We’re torn between the West entrance and the East entrance, and we’d like to do a short hike of no more than 2 hours since we don’t want to arrive too late in Monterey.
This park is split into two distinct zones with no connection between them, and the mileage from Coalinga to Monterey is pretty much the same for both. Which area do you recommend visiting—east or west? And which route is the most scenic?
I’ve spotted two short hikes:
- East: Moses Spring to Rim Trail Loop
- West: Balconies Cliffs Cave Loop
Has anyone been there, or do you have another hike to suggest?

After our first trip as a young couple to the West in 2007 (yes, that doesn’t make us any younger!), we’re planning to go back in 2028, but this time as a family of four! (We have two boys who’ll be 5½ and 13 years old in the summer of 2028.)
Our plan is to combine a few big cities (SF and LA, maybe San Diego) with national parks and state parks, mostly!
Ideally, we’d like to leave at the end of June and head back to France around July 19–20, so we can enjoy the first week of the Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
Since we already did the "loop" in 2007, there are must-see places we absolutely want to revisit—and especially share with our kids: Bryce Canyon, Yosemite, and above all, the Grand Canyon, which is still the most incredible thing I’ve ever seen on Earth!
On the other hand, some places didn’t leave a big impression on us for various reasons, so we’re not making them a priority: Antelope Canyon, Monument Valley, for example.
We’re planning ahead, but might as well be smart about it😏
Do you have any tips for a fun and doable itinerary over about 20–25 days with kids, without rushing?

Just a quick question about King Canyon and Sequoia National Park.
Before our night in Miramonte, we plan to visit King Canyon. The next stop will be two nights in Three Rivers to explore Sequoia National Park. I wanted to go all the way to Roaring River Falls on the King Canyon Scenic Byway and then turn back to head to Miramonte. Since we’re coming from Oakhurst, Google Maps says it’s 300 km and 5 hours of driving. Since we also want to hike to see the sequoias (Big Stump Area and Grand Grove) before tackling the King Canyon Scenic Byway, the timing’s going to be tight. How far do you recommend going before turning back to miss as few points of interest as possible on the King Canyon Scenic Byway? Thanks for your advice, and have a great evening!

After years of hoping, waiting, planning, then changing, saving, and searching for the best possible route... we're FINALLY off this summer for a 5-week road trip in the West.
I had planned a trip to Colorado in 2021 but canceled due to COVID, so with time passing and my eldest’s high school graduation approaching fast, I figured it was now or never!

We’ll be alternating between house swaps, motels, and campgrounds. I’ve booked all the accommodations (except the campground at Bryce since sunset bookings open only 14 days in advance) and the first activities, as well as the most touristy ones.
I’m currently putting together my day-by-day roadbook and having some trouble planning certain days, like in LA or Las Vegas. Choosing hikes isn’t easy either—it’s tough to decide!

I’d like to travel along I-15N from San Diego to Las Vegas with my mom, who’s 67. We’ve explored Northern California and the California Coast over the past two years and now want to continue through the desert.
There are several attractions along the way:
- Mormon Rocks
- Desert Discovery Center and visit the Old Woman meteorite
- Joshua Tree National Park
- Mojave Desert
- Mojave National Preserve
- Anza-Borrego Desert State Park
- Silverwood Lake
My mom has back issues that prevent her from hiking or walking on trails with elevation changes. Is it possible to visit these places by car, or are the routes flat enough?
I’d love for her to experience the desert with an itinerary adapted to her condition. I’m also open to other points of interest that aren’t mentioned. We have 3-4 days for the trip, so we’re not in a rush—just want to explore.
I’d love to take a road trip and visit Nova Scotia. I’d appreciate some info on the best cities to see and the most interesting spots. The trip should last about 10 to 15 days, staying in hotels or motels. Thanks in advance!

Is it pretty easy to navigate Detroit Airport to catch the connecting flight to Grand Rapids (domestic flight)? There are several of them who speak English well.

We’d like to walk to Eagle Falls and then Eagle Lake. I’ve spotted two parking lots that seem close to each other and give access to the trailhead. Where and how do we pay for entry to Emerald Bay State Park and Inspiration Point?
**Viewpoints on the East Side:**
Are most of the viewpoints (Balancing Rock, Granite Cave, Bonsai Rock, etc.) right by the road, or do you have to hike to reach them?
**Donner Memorial State Park:**
Is it worth making a detour to Truckee to visit this park and the Truckee historic downtown?

I'm shocked by the price of the Upper Antelope Canyon tour—$175 for less than an hour… You might say, "if you can’t afford it…" But the real question is whether it’s really worth it, because $350 for two makes me feel like I’m getting ripped off. I’ve read there are trails to access the trailheads for Cinder Cone (11 km) and Warner Valley. Are these easy trails for an SUV?
Are there any other must-see spots or things we shouldn’t miss?

I’m a total USA addict. I’ve already done several road trips, including the East Coast and West Coast.
I’m here today because I’m planning to go back for another road trip on the West Coast. Possibly with one of my sisters and a couple of friends. It’s still just a plan for now, but I’m working on an itinerary in the meantime. Ideally, I’d leave in 2026, but I don’t have the exact dates yet—maybe April-May or September-October.
My last trip to the West Coast was in September 2014. We went for 2 weeks, but this time it’d be 3 weeks. What made me want to go back was simply a colleague who just left today. As I’m writing this, he’s on the plane. I’m so happy for him, but now all I can think about is going back.
Since I recently went to NY, I noticed that prices have really gone up. I assume the same is true for the West Coast? For 2 people over 3 weeks, what budget should I expect? We’re the type to watch our spending and find great tips.
I think we’ll arrive in San Francisco like the first time and leave from either Los Angeles or Las Vegas.

Travelers to the United States | Photo Now Mandatory Upon Entry and Exit | La Presse
I assume many of you already know, but the America the Beautiful annual pass, which was $80, will increase to $250 starting January 1, 2026.
So if you're planning to travel before the end of December 2026, it's in your best interest to buy your pass in December 2025, since it will still cost $80 and be valid until the end of December 2026 if you purchase it in December 2025.
This price increase only applies to non-U.S. residents.
Additionally, for those who planned to visit just one park, a $100 surcharge per person will apply to access a list of 11 national parks...
For example, if there are 4 of you in a car, you’ll have to pay $35 + $400,
which comes to $435 to visit one of the 11 parks on the list (I don’t have all of them... Bryce, Zion, Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Grand Teton, etc.).
Total madness.
The goal is to push people who only visit one park into buying the annual pass.
Last point: free entry days are over for non-residents!

We just finished 9 days in the American West and wanted to share our experience because we had an amazing time.
I know some of you might ask, why use an agency? Honestly, we didn’t really feel like doing all the driving and planning, especially since we didn’t know the area at all. And since our English isn’t great, having French-speaking guides was a big comfort.
We found Emmanuelle and Isabelle, and wow, they were fantastic. It was just the two of us with them, so it was a truly VIP, ultra-personalized experience. They treated us like royalty from start to finish. These two live in Las Vegas and know the region like the back of their hand. They told us they’ve spent over 15 years exploring every corner of the American West, and it really shows. Their knowledge of geology, park history, and local anecdotes is just impressive. The service was really personalized. They adapted to our pace and preferences, and we could stop whenever we wanted to take photos. It’s the luxury of being in a small private group—you’re not just a number on a big bus.
In short, we really felt like we were traveling with friends rather than professional guides. Everything’s included in the price (hotel pickup, meals, park entries, etc.), so the value for money is fair.
We loved it so much that we’re already planning to come back next year to explore other areas with them. I think we’ve caught the American West bug—it’s all we can think about, and we can’t wait to return.
