Hi, We’d love to do a river cruise in Italy. We’ve never been on a cruise before and we’d like to combine a river cruise with excursions. Has anyone done this before? If so, any info or suggestions would be really helpful. Which ship and itinerary would be best? Thanks in advance for your help.

hi there, uhhh have you looked at a map of Italy’s geography? The only real river is the Po, and since it flows down from the Alps, the water level isn’t high enough to navigate. Then, as for the "Italian boot," it’s made up of the Apennine mountain range, so there’s no major river along its axis. That said, you can probably do some excursions on the Venetian lagoon.

If you want to go on river cruises, it’s possible in France by renting a boat without a license on the Saône or the Rhône. France also has kilometers of canals you can explore by boat. It’s obviously possible on the Danube in Austria and Hungary too.

hi everyone, I sincerely apologize (oops, I’m so embarrassed 🙁) There *is* indeed a river cruise from Mantua to Venice. Le Figaro article here
