Hi everyone, is it still possible to travel in Ecuador outside the Amazon region? If so, do you have a reliable agency to recommend? All your recent experiences from the past few months would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much

I’ve lived in Ecuador for 19 years.

Yes, you can travel there without any problems and visit the usual tourist areas. I travel a lot within the country myself, and my Belgian daughter is even coming from Belgium for a trip she’s organizing on her own. But you should take a few precautions:

1. The usual ones 2. Certain areas like Duran, the suburbs of Guayaquil, and Esmeraldas 3. Avoid walking around on foot at night if you don’t know the area 4. Avoid certain overnight bus routes, like the Quevedo ring road 5. Use taxis recommended by your host 6. Ask trusted locals in the areas you’re visiting.

Hello, Don’t be afraid—Ecuador is a wonderful country with an adorable population. Personally, I traveled there alone at 73 years old for several weeks using the "monsieurtoutlemonde" buses without any issues. Just don’t do anything reckless in Guayaquil at night. I recommend staying with locals (Airbnb). Best regards, Jean Pierre

Hi Muriel, I’m replying to your post with a big delay—maybe your travel plans have already come and gone. Still, I can give you the name of a French agency based in Quito that’s really well organized, and on top of that, the "bosses" are super nice. If you choose this agency, say hi to Antoine, the boss, for me. It’s ITK Travel—you’ll find their contact details online. Happy travels
Bonne route

Hi Jean-Pierre,

Totally agree with you, thanks for your feedback! Ecuador is very peaceful in the Andes, the Amazon, or even the Galapagos Islands. On the Pacific coast, you should avoid the big cities without much charm (e.g., Guayaquil, Manta, Esmeraldas) and take "classic" precautions. Everything goes very smoothly.

Just to be clear, security issues do exist, of course (due to drug consumption in North America and Europe), but they only affect locals. They’re also very localized in tough cities or neighborhoods where tourists really have no business being.

For accommodations, I’d still recommend booking directly with hotels or even staying with locals if you get the chance for a more authentic experience.

Airbnb is convenient (like Booking) for planning your trip in advance, but they take commissions that don’t help local tourism players at all. Besides, since Ecuador isn’t very touristy, you can (almost) organize everything on the spot at the last minute, and it always works out great. This lets you travel according to your mood—it’s awesome.

The only things you should book in advance from home are Galapagos cruises and Amazon stays to get the best conditions.

Oh, and you don’t need an agency here. It’s super easy to plan your adventure solo. You can find all the info online.

Happy travels to everyone in Ecuador and the Galapagos!
