Et oui moi aussi j'ai à mon tours un itinéraire à vous soumettre. Celui ci a été grandement inspiré par les discussions que je suis depuis un moment, les différents conseils donnés et les carnets/sites des pro du coin. J'espère que mon circuit tient la route car il m'a demandé beaucoup de travail.
J'attends donc vos remarques et commentaires avec impatience. Merci d'avance
Présentation : famille de 5 dont 3 enfants de 8 (fille), 10 et 13 ans (garçons), habitués à randonner (on adore), passionnés de photo.
Itinéraire prévu en juillet 2014 en formules hôtels+loc de voiture
J1 : Salt lake city (vol intérieur) - prise de la voiture - courses pour les pique niques - Moab (dodo Moab)
J2 : Arches / rando Devils garden trail (tôt le matin) /piscine (ça devrait motiver les lèves tard)/ Delicate Arche Trail pour le coucher de soleil en fin d'après midi. Bon ça va être la partie difficile de re motiver les troupes😕. Du coup est il raisonnable de la prévoir le premier jour lorsque l'on arrive de Salt Lake City ?
J3 : Canyonland (découverte du parc en 4*4 le matin et rafting l'après midi)
J4 : Départ Moab pour Mesa Verde et Four Corner (si on a le temps. Je ne suis pas sure de cette étape car je voudrais assister au coucher de soleil sur MV et je ne sais pas combien de temps va nous prendre la visite de Mesa Verde). Dodo Mexican Hat.
J5 : Monument valley à la fraiche (pour la lumière) et route vers Moab. En fonction de l'heure d'arrivée peut être une croisière sur le Lake Powell en fin d'après midi si c'est faisable en fonction du temps mis pour rejoindre page depuis MV (sur google map ça va. Mais en vrai ?)
J6 : Lower Antelope et Horseshoe Bend puis route vers Zion . Question : est ce que Coral Pink Sand Dune vaut la peine car la lumière ne sera pas bonne pour les photos (après midi) et je pense qu'il y ferra vraiment très chaud. Nuit Zion.
J7 : Zion. Ce parc me pose un problème car on y va pour faire les Narrows. Mais si le niveau de l'eau rend cette rando aquatique impraticable, qu'y a t'il à faire comme rando à la journée?
J8 : Zion - Bryce en passant par Cedar break NM, Dixie NF et red Canyon. Est ce que ce programme n'est pas trop ambitieux (Cedar Break nous fait faire un détours) pour arriver sur Bryce au coucher du soleil ? Sinon d'autres choses à voir le long de la 89?
J10 : Bryce - Torrey en passant par la scenic drive 12. Incursion au Capitol Reef juste pour voir. Pas de rando prévue
J11 : Torrey - Un endroit encore indéterminé . En fait j'aimerai profiter des paysages de Montagne et faire une étape genre "chalet montagnard" au milieu d'une prairie 😊. Est ce quelqu'un connait un tel endroit ? Sinon j'ai pensé à Ogden. Qui connait ? Cela fait une grosse route en partant de Torrey mais on aura moins à faire le lendemain pour rejoindre Jackson
J12 : X - Jackson . dodo Jackson WY (Rodéo le soir)
J13 : Grand Teton NP . Rando prévue : Inspiration point et Cascade Canyon . Dodo Jackson
J14 : Jackson WY - Yellowstone . dodo Grant Village Lodge

Soit :
Redescendre de Cody à Denver mais la route semble moins excitante. Des idées d'itinéraires ?
L'avantage de la deuxième solution c'est moins de route (je pense qu'on en aura marre de toute cette route) et surtout que je pourrais garder le Sud Dakota dans un futur circuit moins speed qui engloberai Cheyenne (pour les frontières days) les Rocky Mountain et les badlands en plus.
Le J4 est impossible: Mesa Verde est un parc chronophage qui demande pratiquement une journée entière de visite (de par sa situation isolée et son mode de fonctionnement: les ruines indiennes doivent obligatoirement se visiter avec un tour guidé qu'il faut réserver sur place)

Il est impossible de vouloir caser en 3 semaines Yellowstone + les parcs de l'Utah + South Dakota + Colorado

Ouah quelles précisions😎!!! Merçi pour tes itinéraires. Cependant on ne souhaite pas passer à Las Vegas et au Grand canyon car on vient juste de faire ces 2 étapes (spring break😊) avec Petrified Forest en plus.
Du coup tes 2 itinéraires au départ de Denver sont très précieux même si celui qui élimine Mesa Verde me chagrine un peu😕. C'est peut être plus raisonnable . On va les étudier (on a le temps après tout) mais il y a 2 choses qui m'ennuient au premier abord : Dinosaur SP ne me tente pas vraiment donc je pense qu'on va supprimer cette étape (du coup on va zapper aussi Flaming gorge car ça fait un trop grand détour). De plus on aimerait vraiment découvrir les Rockys en prenant le temps donc juste y passer une nuit ne m'emballe pas non plus😊.
argh!! ça me déprime de rentrer directement de Cody vers Denver🙁. Mais j'ai beau tourner dans tous les sens rien ne me tente le long de la 20 et de la 87.
Du coup si on zappe le Sud Dakota, on prendrait un vol au départ de Cody, de Jackson ou de Billing pour rentrer directement sur Boston mais j'ai peur des frais d'abandon du véhicule.
Tu es sur que le Sud Dakota sur 3 jours 2 nuits c'est trop speed ? Il me semblait avoir vu des discussions (sur un autre forum) où les pro avaient l'air de trouver ça faisable, c'est en partie pour ça que je m'en suis inspirée😕.
vu la longue réponse de Jacqueline et ses possibilités, je vais attendre ton prochain projet de circuit. Juste quelques remarques :

Si tu regardes mon cr et les photos sur Picasa, nous sommes passés à Castel Gardens, Thermopolis et Legend Rock : que de bons souvenirs. Pour Castel Gardens, SUV au minimum conseillé.
Canyonland (découverte du parc en 4*4 le matin
Sauf si tu fais la Shaffer Trail, le 4x4 n'est pas utile pour une matinée à Island in The Sky.
Autour de MV, ne pas oublier Goosenecks et Valley of Gods.
Ce qui est sure apparemment c'est qu'il faut que je revois mon parcours .. Après d'un autre côté c'est vrai que j'ai la possibilité de revenir souvent dans cette région.
Je crois que je m'achemine de plus en plus vers un circuit Yellowstone, le sud Dakota et les Rockys sur 3 semaines puis un autre circuit qui engloberra les parcs de l'Utah et du Colorado sur 15 jours.
Je vais regarder ton carnet de voyage car Thermopolis m'interpelle mais si je sépare mon circuit en 2 je ne suis pas sure d'arriver à l'intégrer sans faire de gros détours.
Il faut que je le retravaille de toutes façons. C'est presque ce qui me plait le plus finalement😊
si tu es en mal d'inspiration... voir ci-dessous mon blog 2012 où après Cody j'ai traversé une partie du Wyoming vers Dinosaur (dont passage à Thermopolis, Lander - ET South Pass City*).

Bon j'ai toute la journée pour travailler sur le parcours alors après avoir lancé une pré discussion avec la famille il en est ressorti que Yellowstone reste un "mythe" (la carotte) pour les enfants le reste n'étant que "des pierres rouges" (dixit les 2 plus jeunes!!!) 🤪
Oui mais moi ça me plait les pierres rouges😉 surtout pour notre "safari photos". Alors pour contenter tout le monde on va devoir mixer, car sinon on ne pourra pas faire certains parcs avant quelques années... adieu mes 2 circuits. Qui a dit que la démocratie au sein d'une famille était une bonne chose !🏴☠️

On abandonnerait le sud Dakota pour mieux y revenir dans un prochain voyage en y joignant les Rockys, les badlands, Devil Tower , Thermopolis (en suivant ta fin de circuit sur le WY) jusqu'à Cheyenne en plus pour essayer d'y être pour les Frontières Days.
Et puis ce que j'ai pu voir, lire et entendre sur Denver me donne très envie de découvrir cette ville donc cela donne :
Pourquoi vouloir repartir à tout prix de Denver si ce n'est pas pour profiter de ce qu'il y a à voir entre les deux? Autant repartir de Salt Lake (la distance à parcourir est moins importante depuis le Yellowstone). Tu n'auras ainsi pas de frais d'abandon du véhicule (qui peuvent monter à 200 ou 300$ HT entre SLC et Denver, à vérifier...).
J11: tu peux faire étape à Flaming Lodge, je sais qu'il y a un lodge dans le parc. Il me semble que Bastinj y avait fait étape.
J13: plutôt que revenir à Jackson essaye plutôt de loger à Colter Bay Village.
J14: premier aperçu: West Thumb au bord de Yellowstone Lake.
J16: oui privilégier Norris, ne pas oublier aussi Fountain Geyser Basin, Artist Paint Pot...
J17: Mammoth Hot Springs bien sûr... Un tour dans Lamar Valley pour voir les animaux. Puis Mount Washburn pour une vue sur une grosse partie du parc et des chaînes environnantes (jusqu'à Grand Teton au Sud)
J18: avant de partir pour Cody faire les deux rives du Grand Canyon de la Yellowstone River. Faire au moins Brink Of The Lower Falls et Uncle's Tom Trail.

- J1 depuis les loueurs de l'aéroport: SLC à Moab= 240miles/3h50 (sans la UT128) ou de Denver à Moab= 375miles/5h50 (365miles/6h00 en passant par la UT128 en arrivant) la différence est "sensible" et ton heure de vol d'arrivée devient un critère important !!
- à la Fin (sur 2 jours), depuis Cody: pour SLC= 460miles/7h30 par Lander (passer à South Pass City**)/GreenRiver WY, et pour Denver= 500miles/7h30 par Casper/Cheyenne. Voir les points d'intérêts puisque la durée est similaire !
Alors pour contenter tout le monde on va devoir mixer, car sinon on ne pourra pas faire certains parcs avant quelques années... adieu mes 2 circuits. Qui a dit que la démocratie au sein d'une famille était une bonne chose !
1) tu ne pourras jamais contenter tout le monde, donc il faut être directif... mais expliquer !
2) il est impératif de garder "l'espoir" d'y retourner, c'est une sacré carotte !
- J2/J3 j'inverserais, car Canyonland est plus facile (points de vues), Arches est plus physique...
- J4 essayer de dormir à MV (tu te tapes 2 fois la route jusque Mexican Hat...à 30mn, de nuit en J4 !).
- Après Page, voir le Frontier Movie Town à Kanab (pour les enfants - décors de Western).
- J13 ne pas revenir sur Jackson pour remonter au Nord ensuite (= nuit Colter Bay par ex.)
Et oui !!! C'est tout le problème: imposer sans en avoir l'air car si ce n'est pas bien compris bonjour les "y'en a marre de toute cette route" "c'est quand qu'on arrive" "j'ai mal au coeur" et autre joyeusetés 🏴☠️.
En tout cas j'adore la répartie pour Yellowstone et je la note pour la sortir à la première réflexion à propos de "tes cailloux rouges"😄 !!
Quant à y retourner, ça ne va pas être dans l'immédiat, car toujours au non de la démocratie participative, il semble qu'Hawaii remporte haut la main les suffrages de la majorité râleuse 😛 pour 2015. Mais ça va être une autre histoire (et un autre budget 😕 )....

A MV c'est vrai que "The view" à l'air sympa mais peut on y dormir à 5 dans la même chambre ?
Sinon.... Tusayan ? Ca me rapproche de Page, non ? Et Jean, tu m'inquiètes à propos d'un retours de nuit à l'hôtel à Mexican hat. La route est elle pénible ? et pour Tusayan ?
Je retiens aussi le Frontier movie town (merci pour l'info). Je ne connaissais pas.
Et pour rentrer je pense qu'on prendra l'avion à Cody pour Boston (en s'y prenant bien en avance on peut trouver des vols one way pas trop chers). On paiera un peu plus cher en frais d'abandon mais quelle tranquillité. On va garder Denver pour une autre fois (avec le "circuit" des Rockys). Du coup on va privilégier l'arrivée sur SLC (très bonne idée)

Avec eux il ne faut pas chercher bien loin : des vagues, la plage, la plongée, et les volcans. Mon fils de 10 ans est totalement fan de volcans !!!😎
"Mes pierres rouges" ont beaucoup de mal à s'imposer face à ça 🤪... Et le problème c'est que cela va rester une majorité pendant encore de loooongues années😛.

Rafting à Moab: c'est plutôt pépère et mémère😛 aucune sensation à avoir, les rapides sont quelque peu lents !

Hello everyone! Really damaged due to flooding caused by runoff after forest fires (a total mess!), does anyone in this friendly forum have any updates on the Apache Trail between Apache Junction and Roosevelt Dam? Is there still a section of the road that’s tough to navigate?
We're leaving at the end of June and will be driving the route between Buffalo and Cody. We’ve already booked our accommodations and a rodeo in Cody, but during the day, we’ll be driving between the two and I’m unsure about the itinerary.
Which route do you think is the most pleasant, interesting, or scenic between:
- The northern route via Highway 14 with Sheridan, Lowell, etc.
- The southern route with Highways 16/20/14, passing by Loaf Mountain Overlook, Powder River Pass, Ten Sleep Canyon...
We’ll be in a car, so we should be able to drive on any road.

I’m almost done planning our September road trip. After our 3-night visit to Sequoia, we’ll have a stopover night in Coalinga (to break up the drive). We’ll be staying two nights in Monterey and would like to stop along the way to visit one side of Pinnacles National Park. We’re torn between the West entrance and the East entrance, and we’d like to do a short hike of no more than 2 hours since we don’t want to arrive too late in Monterey.
This park is split into two distinct zones with no connection between them, and the mileage from Coalinga to Monterey is pretty much the same for both. Which area do you recommend visiting—east or west? And which route is the most scenic?
I’ve spotted two short hikes:
- East: Moses Spring to Rim Trail Loop
- West: Balconies Cliffs Cave Loop
Has anyone been there, or do you have another hike to suggest?

After our first trip as a young couple to the West in 2007 (yes, that doesn’t make us any younger!), we’re planning to go back in 2028, but this time as a family of four! (We have two boys who’ll be 5½ and 13 years old in the summer of 2028.)
Our plan is to combine a few big cities (SF and LA, maybe San Diego) with national parks and state parks, mostly!
Ideally, we’d like to leave at the end of June and head back to France around July 19–20, so we can enjoy the first week of the Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
Since we already did the "loop" in 2007, there are must-see places we absolutely want to revisit—and especially share with our kids: Bryce Canyon, Yosemite, and above all, the Grand Canyon, which is still the most incredible thing I’ve ever seen on Earth!
On the other hand, some places didn’t leave a big impression on us for various reasons, so we’re not making them a priority: Antelope Canyon, Monument Valley, for example.
We’re planning ahead, but might as well be smart about it😏
Do you have any tips for a fun and doable itinerary over about 20–25 days with kids, without rushing?

Just a quick question about King Canyon and Sequoia National Park.
Before our night in Miramonte, we plan to visit King Canyon. The next stop will be two nights in Three Rivers to explore Sequoia National Park. I wanted to go all the way to Roaring River Falls on the King Canyon Scenic Byway and then turn back to head to Miramonte. Since we’re coming from Oakhurst, Google Maps says it’s 300 km and 5 hours of driving. Since we also want to hike to see the sequoias (Big Stump Area and Grand Grove) before tackling the King Canyon Scenic Byway, the timing’s going to be tight. How far do you recommend going before turning back to miss as few points of interest as possible on the King Canyon Scenic Byway? Thanks for your advice, and have a great evening!

There are several attractions along the way:

- Joshua Tree National Park
- Mojave Desert
- Mojave National Preserve
- Anza-Borrego Desert State Park
- Silverwood Lake
My mom has back issues that prevent her from hiking or walking on trails with elevation changes. Is it possible to visit these places by car, or are the routes flat enough?
I’d love for her to experience the desert with an itinerary adapted to her condition. I’m also open to other points of interest that aren’t mentioned. We have 3-4 days for the trip, so we’re not in a rush—just want to explore.
I’d love to take a road trip and visit Nova Scotia. I’d appreciate some info on the best cities to see and the most interesting spots. The trip should last about 10 to 15 days, staying in hotels or motels. Thanks in advance!

Are most of the viewpoints (Balancing Rock, Granite Cave, Bonsai Rock, etc.) right by the road, or do you have to hike to reach them?
**Donner Memorial State Park:**
Is it worth making a detour to Truckee to visit this park and the Truckee historic downtown?

I’m a total USA addict. I’ve already done several road trips, including the East Coast and West Coast.
I’m here today because I’m planning to go back for another road trip on the West Coast. Possibly with one of my sisters and a couple of friends. It’s still just a plan for now, but I’m working on an itinerary in the meantime. Ideally, I’d leave in 2026, but I don’t have the exact dates yet—maybe April-May or September-October.
My last trip to the West Coast was in September 2014. We went for 2 weeks, but this time it’d be 3 weeks. What made me want to go back was simply a colleague who just left today. As I’m writing this, he’s on the plane. I’m so happy for him, but now all I can think about is going back.
Since I recently went to NY, I noticed that prices have really gone up. I assume the same is true for the West Coast? For 2 people over 3 weeks, what budget should I expect? We’re the type to watch our spending and find great tips.
I think we’ll arrive in San Francisco like the first time and leave from either Los Angeles or Las Vegas.

I assume many of you already know, but the America the Beautiful annual pass, which was $80, will increase to $250 starting January 1, 2026.
So if you're planning to travel before the end of December 2026, it's in your best interest to buy your pass in December 2025, since it will still cost $80 and be valid until the end of December 2026 if you purchase it in December 2025.
This price increase only applies to non-U.S. residents.
Additionally, for those who planned to visit just one park, a $100 surcharge per person will apply to access a list of 11 national parks...
For example, if there are 4 of you in a car, you’ll have to pay $35 + $400,
which comes to $435 to visit one of the 11 parks on the list (I don’t have all of them... Bryce, Zion, Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Grand Teton, etc.).
Total madness.
The goal is to push people who only visit one park into buying the annual pass.
Last point: free entry days are over for non-residents!

We just finished 9 days in the American West and wanted to share our experience because we had an amazing time.
I know some of you might ask, why use an agency? Honestly, we didn’t really feel like doing all the driving and planning, especially since we didn’t know the area at all. And since our English isn’t great, having French-speaking guides was a big comfort.
