On entend souvent parler du Montana, des beautés de cet État, de l'immensité de son ciel 😉... Oui mais, pour les personnes qui y sont déjà allées, pourriez-vous me dire exactement les coins à privilégier, ce qui vous plaît particulièrement dans cet État, ce qui pourrait m'inciter à le mettre "sur ma liste" pour cet été. Je suis tentée de découvrir ce coin-là, mais quand je lis "louer une cabane au bord d'un lac pendant quelques jours", je me dis que ce n'est pas du tout du tout mon truc. Donc voilà, le Montana est-il une destination qui me (nous) conviendrait ? L'heure n'est pas encore à la décision, mais à la cogitation... Mon idée initiale, c'est de passer 8 jours entre Rapid City et Missoula, avec passage obligé au Mount Rushmore (que j'ai déjà fait il y a presque 20 ans mais j'aimerais y retourner avec mon fils) et à Devil's Tower (pas fait), à Cody, une éventuelle toute petite incursion à Yellowstone (suis pas fan, désolée Itat 😛), avant de prendre la direction du Montana (et après de prendre l'avion pour la Californie).
Pour cerner un peu nos envies et notre "profil" : on ne cherche pas à faire de rando ou des parcs connus des seuls initiés, on voudrait de beaux points de vue, de jolies petites villes typiques (il y en a au Montana, d'après ce que j'ai pu voir, mais lesquelles privilégier ?), des endroits avec ambiance "cow-boy", éventuellement des endroits un peu fun pour le petit... (et là encore, je ne parle pas de parties de pêche sur un lac 😉). J'ai passé un mois au Wyoming (Casper) il y a presque 20 ans, je cerne un peu l'ambiance et la vie là-bas, je sais que les paysages sont magnifiques, mais je voudrais des arguments "concrets" pour "vendre" cette destination un peu moins classique que le Grand Canyon and co. à mes hommes. 🙂

Mais ton fils adorerait les animaux (bisons, cerfs, ours...) et les geysers? Non? Je suis sûr que si tu lui montres des vidéos (youtube) d'animaux en liberté au Yellowstone ou de geyser en éruption, ça va lui plaire 😛
Les animaux, oui, c'est pour cela que ce serait une "toute petite incursion" 😉. Mais je ne me vois pas y passer 3 ou 5 jours comme il l'est souvent préconisé ici pour voir tous les coins et recoins. (même s'il y a une partie, dont j'ai oublié le nom, qui m'a bien plue et que je ne connaissais pas, sur tes photos. Ca ressemble un peu à Pamukkale, en Turquie...)

Ns sommes passés 2 fois au Montana; c'est vrai que le ciel y est immense...
J'ai aimé les villes fantômes: Bannack SP (photo 1) , Virginia city, un peu moins fantôme; Missoula ( 2) ne ns a pas particulièrement intéressés; on est allés à Lolo Pass , ss la neige mi-mai.
Il y a de nombreuses années, on était passés au lac Polson, avant de s'enfuir vers le sud, chassés par le mauvais temps (en Aout)
C'est un état moins surprenant que les états du sud-ouest, mais qui vaut la peine d'être visité.

Voici quelques idees et pensees concernant Montana. Il y a longtemps, je suis alle de Yellowstone NP a Glacier NP en traversant l'ouest de l'etat dont Missoula. Plus recemment, j'y etais en voiture en passant par Bozeman, et aussi un peu dans l'est de l'etat entre Dakota du Nord et Devils Tower dans le Wyoming. Lors de mon trajet a velo, les deux petits villages Virginia City et Nevada City (un peu nord-ouest de Yellowstone) etaient sympa, chacun une ville (presque) fantome bien preservee. Un peu touristique, oui, mais aussi un peu du Wild West authentique. J'espere que ces villages sont toujours comme ca.
J'aimais beaucoup le paysage du nord-ouest de l'etat, entre Flathead Lake et Idaho. On y voit des montagnes de taille moyenne (2000m) 100% boisee, et presque personne y habitent. On peut visiter Hot Springs eventuellement.
J'etais un peu surpris que l'est de l'etat au bord de la riviere Missouri etait si beau. Pas grande chose a faire, mais joli. C'etait pareil en allant vers le sud pour arriver a Devils Tower. Pas loin de Devils Tower mais en Dakota du Sud, le Mammoth Site a Hot Springs (coincidence que c'est le meme nom que l'endroit dans le Montana) est interessant a visiter.

Bozeman et Missoula sont sympa comme petites villes. Helena m'a decu un petit peu.
C'est vraiment vaut la peine de faire quelques petites balades a Glacier NP et surtout a Yellowstone. Par example, j'ai suivi un trail en aval de Yellowstone Falls et il y avait absolument personne sur le trail avec de belles vues de la Yellowstone River. Au sommet de Logan Pass (Going-to-the-Sun Road, qui est pour moi, le plus beau col du pays et je connais beaucoup d'autres bien plus eleves), j'ai fait une balade/petite randonnee au Hidden Lake. Seulement 3 miles A-R, et tres joli. Mais j'avoue que Glacier est superbe pour ses randonnees plus longues.

Pour les belles routes... j'ai un livre : Scenic Driving Montana. Et à chaque année quand on le peut on en fait une.
Tu peux faire un genre de roadtrip.
Les gens sont incroyablement gentils. De petits villages loin de tout mais souvent il y a un petit musée quelconque, un bon petit déjeuner.... des gens qui viennent te causer de leur grand-père....
C'est un état où il y a beaucoup d'animaux.
Les enfants sont admis dans les saloons.
Tu peux lire quelques auteurs du Montana ca va te donner vraiment le goût : Pete Fromm par exemple qui a passé tout un hiver dans une cabane.
ou Rick Bass.
Et le ciel................ alors là on n'y perd c'est tellement mais tellement beau.

Oui, j'ai vu dans un topic que tu avais le bouquin Scenic Driving Montana. Je l'aurais déjà commandé s'il était disponible immédiatement sur amazon.fr mais apparemment, ce n'est pas le cas (je vais pousser mes recherches sur les conditions proposées par les vendeurs US).
Un roadtrip, c'est tout à fait ce que je recherche, mais pour cela, il me faudrait des étapes... Ce que j'aime et qui m'intéresse, ce sont des routes belles en elles-mêmes, avec de jolis paysages et des petites villes typiques. Je ne veux pas d'activités physiques du style pêche, canoë, marche... mais pourquoi pas un peu d'équitation dans un ranch (mon fils et mon mari en font). Moi ce que j'aime et ce qui m'éclate, c'est de prendre des photos. 😊 De voir des choses dépaysantes, insolites, typiques. Ce qui fait un bon cliché, quoi. 😊
Ce que je ne voudrais pas, c'est avoir prévu une semaine de voiture dans cet État, et que derrière (et à gauche), on me dise : "Mais pourquoi tu nous as amenés ici, qu'est-ce qu'il y a à voir et à faire ?!". Donc je veux absolument aller à Mount Rushmore et Devil's Tower, ce sont des "buts" en eux-mêmes, Cody parce que j'ai le souvenir que c'est une petite ville sympa et typique, Yellowstone 5 minutes pour faire plaisir à Itat 😛, mais après... ?

Nous, a l'habitude de se choisir une route... et on arrête à quelque part selon nos envies et selon les avis du guide.
A date on n'a jamais été décu.
Les paysages sont toujours très très extraordinaires - tellement immenses et très variées : plaines immenses, collines, les Rocheuses aussi... Je ne me lasse pas de rouler au Montana... ca me fait beaucoup de bien.... en fait ca remue quelque chose en moi... ca donne énormément de bonheur mais je ne sais pas trop comment l'expliquer. C'est beaucoup d'amour en tout cas.
Les endroits sont toujours typiques au Montana. 🙂
Comme tu vas de Devils Towers à Missoula / tu pourrais emprunter de belles routes selon ton point de départ et ton arrivé.
Buts : ben là ca dépend tu cherches quoi... On a déjà fait ce trajet et on empruntait des routes secondaires mais sans véritable but, on arrêtait selon nos envies.
Notre prochain roadtrip printemps 2012 : on fera Yaak River Country (le pays de Rick Bass). On va arrêter selon nos envies, selon aussi les trucs à ne pas manquer selon mon guide Scenic Driving. J'ai d'autres guides de voyage aussi... Parfois c'est juste un saloon dans un village quelconque, un petit musée de village, un beau point de vue ou s'arrêter pour prendre des photos... Un pont, un village fantôme, une cabane que je trouve jolie et que j'ai envie de photographier. Le bord d'une rivière... on s'y pose une heure ou deux. Une vallée.... Bref plein de petites choses dont l'ensemble est grand.
si ton projet se concrétise et que tu n'arrives pas à trouver ce guide, je pourrais te faire des photocopies selon ton trajet.
J'aime bien aussi le guide Moon. Là ca plus te donner des idées d'activités.

Je comprends la façon dont vous visitez : pour vous, ce n'est pas loin, donc vous vous laissez porter sans but réel, en sachant qu'en plus, vous pouvez revenir facilement pour approfondir ou aller dans d'autres coins. Comme la France pour nous. 😉
Pour nous, la donne est un peu différente (même si je suppose que certains Européens voient les choses comme ça aussi). Un peu comme des Canadiens qui visiteraient la France. Il faut un minimum de points de chute et de centres d'intérêt.

Il y a de superbes maisons avec de grandes vérandas. Et il y a un parc avec des scultures de Sacajawa. Le centre ville est très joli est vraiment typique. Il y a la rivière Yellowstone qui y passe.... j'adore photographier les pêcheurs à la mouche. 🙂
Et au motel... ils accueillaient aussi les chevaux.... trippant quand même! 🙂
Ca va aller avec ton itinéraire je crois.
J'aime beaucoup la région du Nord-Ouest : Big Fork, Whitefish, Polsom... etc. mais c'est un peu plus haut que Missoula.

Dans le Dakota... vous pouvez aller à un souper western.... mes fistons ont beaucoup aimé ca. Ils ont peu tirer au revolver vrai de vrai, y'avait une prison, des cowboys qui se tirent dessus etc... La bouffe était très ordinaire mais l'ambiance est sympa avec des chanteurs et musiciens de coutry.

Vous pouvez aussi visiter une mine d'or..... et mon plus jeune a adooooré chercher de l'or, il a gardé ses trouvailles en souvenir. 🙂

Au Montana il y a plein de state Parks.... de forêt préservée..... plein, plein, plein.... On voit toujours beaucoup d'animaux sur le bord des routes - des cerfs surtout. Y'a une réserve pour les bisons pas loin de Missoula.
et ne manque par d'aller manger un hamburger dans un saloon avec une bonne bière bien sûr. Les gens sont très très gentils.

La mine c'est à Keystone dans le Dakota... mais y'en a d'autres aussi ailleurs c'est que là tu es juste à côté du mont Rushmore. Pour le souper faudrait que je fasse un peu de recherches... mais y'en a un peu partout, peut-être aussi au Montana en tout cas y'en a chez-moi.
Si tu connais Laura Insgalls (peut-être que tu es trop jeune et trop loin pour ca...) perso j'ai tripppé d'aller voir une exposition sur elle dans une vieille école de Keystone. Vraiment sympa cette petite ville.
J'adore ce genre de petites visites (je vais te dire un secret mais ne le dis pas à Le Tigre il va rire de moi😠.... j'ai (et mes 3 hommes aussi) préféré visité une champignonnière (tellement cool) dans la Vallée de la Loire que le château de je ne sais plus quoi bref... fallait faire la file pour voir un simple lit)
A mon avis 8 jours tu vas manquer de temps pour le Dakota et le Montana en plus de Yellowstone.
Tu ne peux quand même pas aller au Dakota sans aller dans le parc des Badlands. Et puis faut faire la Beartooth Highway.
Red Lodge est très sympa comme villle... y'a un super candy store qui fait vraiment Ouest. (c'est que j'adore les candy's store et celui là est l'un des plus beau que j'ai vus)
Pour le Glacier National Park : même si vous ne faites pas de longues randonnées vous allez bien en profiter malgré tout. Y'a plein de points de vue un peu partout. Perso.... mon secteur préféré est le lake Two Medecine.... Dans les collines ou l'on voyait le lac d'en haut c'est tellement beau. Et la route avec les vaches qui nous arrivent dessus dans un tournant.... Mais vous pouvea quand même marcher quelques kilomètres ?
Tant qu'a ca vous traversez au Canada pour aller à Waterton...... très chouette avec les cerfs et les chèvres de montagnes qu se baladent dans le village. Génial pour les enfants.
Bon y'a des séjours en ranchs, tu parlais d'équitation... mais c'est drôlement cher ca (le séjour)!!!
Et tellement tellement de choses à faire et à voir et à manger car on mange très bien au Montana.

Oh non 😉. J'adore ! D'ailleurs, quand j'avais visité le "Village québécois d'antan", j'étais comme une gosse, je me croyais dans le village de Laura, c'est typiquement le genre d'endroit que j'adore !

Pour les ranchs d'équitation, effectivement, c'est hors de prix. L'une de mes amies a passé une semaine ici http://www.mmgranch.net/index.html et waow, je ne me vois pas séjourner là à trois, surtout qu'une semaine, c'est trop long, faut vraiment être passionné de chevaux pour ça... Mais je me disais que je pourrais peut-être trouver un endroit pour monter une heure ou deux, un peu comme à Monument Valley.

Bien sûr, je fais de petits week-ends ou courts séjours en France, ou même ailleurs en Europe, mais pour moi, les vacances, c'est loin, et ce sont des "voyages". 😊 Je suis curieuse d'autres paysages, d'autres modes de vie. Je veux voir le monde. J'approfondirai la France (quelle chance d'avoir un tel pays si près) et la Belgique quand je serai vieille 😛. (et encore, pas sûre !)
Quand mon fils était petit, je faisais des concessions, on partait en Turquie (ce n'est toujours pas la France 😏), mais alors, on partait à deux, loin. Mais depuis que le "petit" a 4 ou 5 ans, on voyage.

Je ne suis pas un spécialiste du Montana, pour n'y avoir passer que quelques heures : mais je te conseille la visite de Little Bighorn Battlefield sur la route entre Devil's Tower et Yellowstone par exemple, ainsi que Beartooth Highway entre Red Lodge et Yellowstone. Sûr que ça va te plaire !
Sinon si l'ambiance "villes et villages fantômes" te plait, le site www.ghosttowns.com est vraiment bien fait pour les repérer état par état.

oui, ton itinéraire me parle mais tu pars au moins 1 mois ? voiture ? moto ? et quand ?
Par contre je roule bcp au feeling et je ne note rien . le problème est que je vois souvent des choses sympas et que j'ai du mal à me souvenir où . d'autant que je ne réserve rien . l'avantage est que je n'ai pas d'à priori et que je tombe parfois sur des super trucs ou au moins très différents .
Pour Jackson , le bar "million dollar bar" est un endroit très sympa pour passer la soirée mais il s'agit quand même d'un bar "cow boy" pour touristes .
je confirme pour les 2 routes que tu cites mais pour en profiter un max il faut quitter yellowstone par le nord est : cooke city direction beartooth pass jusqu'à red lodge puis faire demi tour pour revenir en arriére et avant cooke city prendre à gauche la chief joseph highway jusqu'à cody .
Glacier incontournable , le plus beau parc avec bryce selon moi .
ensuite la route 20 jusqu'à seattle
La météo fin mai début juin en 2007 : moto en tee shirt au glacier nat'l park et 3 jours aprés entre butte et bozeman neige et pluie "all the day"
un conseil : avoir des pellicules photos pour ceux qui sont encore trad et pour les autres charger la batterie tous les soirs !

Hello everyone! Really damaged due to flooding caused by runoff after forest fires (a total mess!), does anyone in this friendly forum have any updates on the Apache Trail between Apache Junction and Roosevelt Dam? Is there still a section of the road that’s tough to navigate?
We're leaving at the end of June and will be driving the route between Buffalo and Cody. We’ve already booked our accommodations and a rodeo in Cody, but during the day, we’ll be driving between the two and I’m unsure about the itinerary.
Which route do you think is the most pleasant, interesting, or scenic between:
- The northern route via Highway 14 with Sheridan, Lowell, etc.
- The southern route with Highways 16/20/14, passing by Loaf Mountain Overlook, Powder River Pass, Ten Sleep Canyon...
We’ll be in a car, so we should be able to drive on any road.

I’m almost done planning our September road trip. After our 3-night visit to Sequoia, we’ll have a stopover night in Coalinga (to break up the drive). We’ll be staying two nights in Monterey and would like to stop along the way to visit one side of Pinnacles National Park. We’re torn between the West entrance and the East entrance, and we’d like to do a short hike of no more than 2 hours since we don’t want to arrive too late in Monterey.
This park is split into two distinct zones with no connection between them, and the mileage from Coalinga to Monterey is pretty much the same for both. Which area do you recommend visiting—east or west? And which route is the most scenic?
I’ve spotted two short hikes:
- East: Moses Spring to Rim Trail Loop
- West: Balconies Cliffs Cave Loop
Has anyone been there, or do you have another hike to suggest?

After our first trip as a young couple to the West in 2007 (yes, that doesn’t make us any younger!), we’re planning to go back in 2028, but this time as a family of four! (We have two boys who’ll be 5½ and 13 years old in the summer of 2028.)
Our plan is to combine a few big cities (SF and LA, maybe San Diego) with national parks and state parks, mostly!
Ideally, we’d like to leave at the end of June and head back to France around July 19–20, so we can enjoy the first week of the Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
Since we already did the "loop" in 2007, there are must-see places we absolutely want to revisit—and especially share with our kids: Bryce Canyon, Yosemite, and above all, the Grand Canyon, which is still the most incredible thing I’ve ever seen on Earth!
On the other hand, some places didn’t leave a big impression on us for various reasons, so we’re not making them a priority: Antelope Canyon, Monument Valley, for example.
We’re planning ahead, but might as well be smart about it😏
Do you have any tips for a fun and doable itinerary over about 20–25 days with kids, without rushing?

Just a quick question about King Canyon and Sequoia National Park.
Before our night in Miramonte, we plan to visit King Canyon. The next stop will be two nights in Three Rivers to explore Sequoia National Park. I wanted to go all the way to Roaring River Falls on the King Canyon Scenic Byway and then turn back to head to Miramonte. Since we’re coming from Oakhurst, Google Maps says it’s 300 km and 5 hours of driving. Since we also want to hike to see the sequoias (Big Stump Area and Grand Grove) before tackling the King Canyon Scenic Byway, the timing’s going to be tight. How far do you recommend going before turning back to miss as few points of interest as possible on the King Canyon Scenic Byway? Thanks for your advice, and have a great evening!

I’d like to travel along I-15N from San Diego to Las Vegas with my mom, who’s 67. We’ve explored Northern California and the California Coast over the past two years and now want to continue through the desert.
There are several attractions along the way:
- Mormon Rocks
- Desert Discovery Center and visit the Old Woman meteorite
- Joshua Tree National Park
- Mojave Desert
- Mojave National Preserve
- Anza-Borrego Desert State Park
- Silverwood Lake
My mom has back issues that prevent her from hiking or walking on trails with elevation changes. Is it possible to visit these places by car, or are the routes flat enough?
I’d love for her to experience the desert with an itinerary adapted to her condition. I’m also open to other points of interest that aren’t mentioned. We have 3-4 days for the trip, so we’re not in a rush—just want to explore.
I’d love to take a road trip and visit Nova Scotia. I’d appreciate some info on the best cities to see and the most interesting spots. The trip should last about 10 to 15 days, staying in hotels or motels. Thanks in advance!

Are most of the viewpoints (Balancing Rock, Granite Cave, Bonsai Rock, etc.) right by the road, or do you have to hike to reach them?
**Donner Memorial State Park:**
Is it worth making a detour to Truckee to visit this park and the Truckee historic downtown?

I’m a total USA addict. I’ve already done several road trips, including the East Coast and West Coast.
I’m here today because I’m planning to go back for another road trip on the West Coast. Possibly with one of my sisters and a couple of friends. It’s still just a plan for now, but I’m working on an itinerary in the meantime. Ideally, I’d leave in 2026, but I don’t have the exact dates yet—maybe April-May or September-October.
My last trip to the West Coast was in September 2014. We went for 2 weeks, but this time it’d be 3 weeks. What made me want to go back was simply a colleague who just left today. As I’m writing this, he’s on the plane. I’m so happy for him, but now all I can think about is going back.
Since I recently went to NY, I noticed that prices have really gone up. I assume the same is true for the West Coast? For 2 people over 3 weeks, what budget should I expect? We’re the type to watch our spending and find great tips.
I think we’ll arrive in San Francisco like the first time and leave from either Los Angeles or Las Vegas.

Travelers to the United States | Photo Now Mandatory Upon Entry and Exit | La Presse
I assume many of you already know, but the America the Beautiful annual pass, which was $80, will increase to $250 starting January 1, 2026.
So if you're planning to travel before the end of December 2026, it's in your best interest to buy your pass in December 2025, since it will still cost $80 and be valid until the end of December 2026 if you purchase it in December 2025.
This price increase only applies to non-U.S. residents.
Additionally, for those who planned to visit just one park, a $100 surcharge per person will apply to access a list of 11 national parks...
For example, if there are 4 of you in a car, you’ll have to pay $35 + $400,
which comes to $435 to visit one of the 11 parks on the list (I don’t have all of them... Bryce, Zion, Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Grand Teton, etc.).
Total madness.
The goal is to push people who only visit one park into buying the annual pass.
Last point: free entry days are over for non-residents!

We just finished 9 days in the American West and wanted to share our experience because we had an amazing time.
I know some of you might ask, why use an agency? Honestly, we didn’t really feel like doing all the driving and planning, especially since we didn’t know the area at all. And since our English isn’t great, having French-speaking guides was a big comfort.
We found Emmanuelle and Isabelle, and wow, they were fantastic. It was just the two of us with them, so it was a truly VIP, ultra-personalized experience. What we really loved: the vehicle was super comfortable, and the little details made a difference—like snacks and even a homemade cake! Though, to be fair, we devoured the cake right away, so that counts.

Plus, on top of the must-see spots, they showed us some hidden gems that were absolutely stunning—places we never would’ve found on our own. They’re true locals who know all the best tips.
The service was really personalized. They adapted to our pace and preferences, and we could stop whenever we wanted to take photos. It’s the luxury of being in a small private group—you’re not just a number on a big bus.
In short, we really felt like we were traveling with friends rather than professional guides. Everything’s included in the price (hotel pickup, meals, park entries, etc.), so the value for money is fair.
We loved it so much that we’re already planning to come back next year to explore other areas with them. I think we’ve caught the American West bug—it’s all we can think about, and we can’t wait to return.
