Nous partons à deux en septembre 2008 en Guyane et nous attendions la réponse du guide Stéphane Plaine "Guyane Randonnées"pour partir en immersion en forêt pendant 4 à 6 jours. Or je viens de recevoir un mail de leur part: "l'activité de Guyane Randonnées est en stand by en 2008" Aller à Saul est incontournable pour nous car semblerait-il ce lieu est magique pour les trecks en foret et ce guide a une excellente réputation. Nous ne savons pas à qui nous adresser. Quelqu'un qui soit très sérieux et suffisamment organisé pour que le séjour reste un plaisir. Avez-vous des suggestions? Merci de vos réponses et de vos suggestions.
Bonjour je me souviens avoir passé 3 jours à Saül lors de l'été 2006 et avoir fait une rando balisée par jour : ce sont des sentiers balisés ONF avec beaucoup de chablis et un peu de boue à l'entrée et sortie du village. On n'a pas eu besoin de guide, et c'était vraiment l'aventure. Il y en avait 3 de mémoire :

L'immersion sans guide ou à peu près! L'hébergement à Saül c'est un peu plus compliqué! bonnes vacances! j'ai lu qu'il y aurait des GR en Guyane fin 2010.
Stéphane était le seul guide professionnel sur Saül (il y habite) et connais très bien la région.
Depuis deux ans, autour du village, l'orpaillage clandestin et légal est très important.
Au Sud, la compagnie Rexma déforeste 24 KM2 de belle forêt primaire pour y extraire de l'or (ceci dans le Parc National Amazonien, vaste blague ce parc...) et aux alentours de Saül (surtout au Nord), on trouve de nombreux sites d'orpaillage clandestins Brésiliens.
En résumé, vous pouvez sans guide faire les layons ONF qui ne sont pas touchés par l'orpaillage, au-delà sans expérience du milieu, il faut un guide, donc vos possibilités la-bas sont restreintes.
Nous n'héritons pas de la Terre, nous l'empruntons à nos enfants.
Tamanoir vous a tout expliqué sur les raisons de l' abandon de l' activité de guide de Stéphane Plaine: l' orpaillage tant clandestin que légal qui sévit dans les zones où Stéphane travaillait.
Stéphane (un Breton comme vous), est un homme très expérimenté et d' un sang froid à toute épreuve. Il connait bien les risques et dangers de la forêt.
Il a été notre guide (ma femme et moi) lors d' une randonnée de 6 jours en immersion totale en forêt primaire dans les environs de Saül en 2006 . Nous en gardons une souvenir émerveillé à tel point que je l' ai contacté en février 2008 pour un raid plus long en durée et distance. C' est à cette occasion qu' il m' a annoncé son abandon du métier de guide en forêt.
Et depuis, comme vous, cela fait 6 mois que je cherche désespérément un guide qui pourrait le suppléer, mais en vain.
Malgré tout, je serai à Saül du 14 novembre au 21 novembre 2008 en espérant au mieux, trouver un guide sur place pour m' aventurer dans cette forêt amazonienne magique, ou au pire, me balader sur les sentiers tracés par l' ONF.
Peut être trouverais je des compagnons de voyage sur place car Saül est assez fréquenté par des amateurs de balades en forêt.
En sachant que ces sentiers ne sont pas entretenus comme ceux de la forêt de Fontainebleau et qu' il y a quelques risques de se perdre pour des amateurs comme vous et moi.
Par contre, au contraire des dires de Aporte75, je ne crois pas qu' il y ait de difficulté à se loger sur Saül: pas dans un palace 4 aétoiles mais dans un carbet où l' on peut accrocher son hamac.
Il a profité d' une opportunité de postuler un poste lors de la création du Parc Amazonien, mais les nombreux sites d' orpaillage qui se trouvent sur ses zones de randonnée ont contribué à ce changement de métier.
Je sais bien que ce n'est pas tout à fait le sujet du post mais j'ai une vision bien moins négative de Rexma.😐
Parce que je travaille dans l'environnement, et j'adore la foret, les petites fleurs, les voyages, mais je sais qu'il y a des gens qui rèvent juste de ramener quelques pépites dans leur misère, et que les opérations anti-clandestin les font bien rire.
On a majoritairement accès à un point de vue « métropolitain », traitant exclusivement de l’impact environnemental en négligeant l’aspect économique local et la réalité de l’orpaillage clandestin.
Personne ne parle des réalisations de REXMA en Bolivie dans un village où la principale source de revenu était la culture du coca, de leurs travaux de regétalisation sur leurs précédentes exploitations ni du fait qu'ils n'utilisent ni cyanure ni mercure.
J'aimerai bien aussi être dans un joli monde, où on aurait pas besoin d'ingénieurs environnement, et où les hommes ne chercheraient pas d'or.
Mais bon, ça n'avance à rien d'espérer, vus le cours de l'or, on empéchera pas indéfinément les clandestins d'amener leurs lances monitor, leur mercure, leurs armes et de repartir au Brésil avec l'or. Et si c'est eux qui s'en chargent, n'espérez pas qu'ils s'amusent à revégétaliser tout ça après leur passage ou qu'ils installent une station d'épuration révolutionnaire pour récupérer leur mercure...🙁
Alors de deux maux je préférerais le moindre.
Et dieu merci, REXMA ne déforeste pas 24 km2 de foret primaire... Leur domaine est vaste mais juste une petite partie contient l'or alluvionnaire. Ils n'ont d'ailleurs pas encore le droit d'exploiter, ils ont juste obtenus un permis de recherche...

Bonjour à toi et à tous ceux qui ont participé à cette conversation. Alors effectivement Stéphane Plaine pour plusieurs raisons a arrêté son activité à Saül pour travailler dans le parc. Cependant, il cherche une solution pour répondre aux demandes très importantes cette année.
C'est vrai que pour les solutions autres, je suis toujours un peu dans l'expectative. Le seul moyen d'avoir des informations exactes c'est de contacter CGG (Compagnie des Guides de Guyane) www.guides-guyane.com ou au 0594223469 (attention au décalage horaire car vous tomber directement chez Pascal STUDER (Secrétaire)). Ce monsieur est charmant et envoie un mail à tous les guides de l'association qui mettent du temps à répondre selon qu'ils sont en treck ou selon les problèmes avec internet. Mais bon, c'est clair qu'il y a d'autres trecks possibles en Guyane et pour cela c'est selon le guide et l'endroit dans lequel il travaille. Donc c'est pas simple car pour ma part j'avais surtout entendu parlé de SaÜl et je reste sur ma faim.
Peut-être y a t-il d'autres endroits magnifiques ailleurs. J'ai contacté quelqu'un pour partir de maripasoula mais je n'en sais guerre plus pour le moment. Les infos sont difficiles à avoir même quand vous avez un guide au téléphone. Ils donnent l'impression de vivre sur une autre planète. Donc je suis toujours preneuse de ce qui pourraient nous permettre d'aller à Saül. Il semblerait possible de trouver d'autres guides sur place mais je n'ai pu en savoir plus.

Apparemment nous sommes plusieurs dans le même cas de figure: trouver un guide sur Saül en remplacement de Stéphane Plaine.
J' ai contacté plusieurs guides de la CCG et comme tu le dis si bien "ils donnent l' impression de vivre sur une autre planéte" et semblent se désintéressés des clients qui les contactent.
Le seul qui m' ait répondu est Richard Gras de Maripasoula ( je pense qu' il s' agit de la même personne que tu as contactée). Il propose des trecks dans le sud de la Guyane dans la région que l' on appelle à tort les Monts Tumuc Humac.Ce sont des randonnées en partie nautiques (remontées de riviéres) et pédestres. Par contre je n' ai jamais pu savoir l' itinéraire exact, ni la durée du treck.
Richard Gras n' a pu donner suite à ma demande car je serai en Guyane tout le mois de Novembre à une époque ou le niveau des fleuves est trop bas pour envisager de les remonter en pirogue.
Donc, j' ai d' ores et déja retenu mon billet d' avion pour Saül où je serai du 14 novembre au 21 novembre 2008.
La bas, j' espère trouver un guide non professionnel ou bien des compagnons de balades pour randonner sur les layons de l' ONF.
A quelle époque comptez vous vous rendre à Saül?

merci pour ta réponse. Effectivement nous sommes actuellement en contact avec Monsieur Gras. Il nous a demandé de lui envoyer un fax. ce que je vais faire demain. Mais je n'ai aucune info concrète. D'après ce que tu dis, tu n'as pas eu plus d'info sur l'itinéraire qu'il propose. Aille! Cela me décourage un peu car j'attends beaucoup de ce contact. Nous ne souhaitons pas un treck foret + parties nautiques car nous comptons partir de Maripasoula pour descendre le Maroni jusqu'à saint-laurent après pour rejoindre Cayenne en voiture. Ce que nous voulons c'est vraiment la forêt.
Nous envisageons notre séjour de mi septembre à début octobre. Dommage nous ne pourrons partager un morceau d'aventure ensemble.
Comment vas-tu faire alors? Quel est ton programme? Je te propose que l'on se contacte par téléphone se sera peut-être plus simple d'échanger en direct. Qu'en penses-tu? Par contre je ne sais comment te donner mes coordonnées sans que cela soit public.

Je ne veux pas te décourager, mais j' ai fait la même démarche auprès de Richard Gras (FAX et courrier postal) et j' attends toujours la réponse.
Apparemment son adresse Email ne fonctionne pas non plus.
Il est vrai que mon séjour en Guyane au mois de novembre n' est pas compatible avec sa prestation essentielle "Les Monts Tumuc Humac" à cause du niveau d' eau des rivières. Peut être aurez vous plus de chance que moi!
Il m' a vaguement évoqué une randonnées vers les Monts Cottica, mais depuis silence radio.
Il est vrai que Saül est le lieu idéal pour le style de randonnée pédestre que vous envisagez:Trés belle forêt primaire sur des collines qui constituent le château d' eau de la Guyane Française.
En 2006, nous nous étions régalés, ma femme et moi, avec Stéphane Plaine.
C' est vraiment dommage que nos dates ne correspondent pas. Peut être une autre fois?
Mon programme sera scindé en 2 parties: du 28 octobre au 13 novembre, avec ma femme nous ferons du tourisme classique: les Marais de Kaw, les ibis rouges du Sinnamary, la visite de Cayenne, les Iles du salut, un séjour dans la canopée vers Kourou, 3 jours de forêt au Camp Cisame sur l' Approuague, etc. Nous avons déjà fait plusieurs fois tout cela mais nous prenons toujours autant de plaisir à le refaire et à chaque fois nous avons notre lot de surprise.
Puis du 14 au 21 novembre, je me rends à Saül où j' aviserai sur place en espérant trouver des compagnons de route pour des ballades en forêt.

En souvenir d'un séjour très révélateur en compagnie d'un guide amérindien "Louis", d'une dizaine de jours en forêt autour de Saul, je serais tenté de renouveller l'expérience entre septembre et Octobre 2008. Faites savoir si vous avez si vous avez de vraies pistes... J'ai essayé d'autres circuits tels que la remontée de la Mana sur 200 Km en pirogue motorisé, puis en novembre dernier au Costarica mais je suis resté sur ma fain. Ce premier voyage à Saul avait quelque chose de fabuleux et je tiens encore à remercier Louis, qui nous a beaucoup apris en toute simplicité. Nous lui devons beaucoup sur la réussite de ce voyage.
Avis aux amateurs, des faits divers récents sont là pour le rapeller : il n'est pas sérieux d'envisager de se passer d'un guide expérimenté dans cette forêt ...

I’m used to hiking in the mountains, but I sometimes get vertigo, for example on ridges with drops on both sides. I wanted to check if there are any T4 or T3-T4 sections and find out if there are any very exposed passages—and if so, where—so I can plan an alternative route.

A hike to Fontainhas—what’s the best direction, considering we’re not great with climbs? No problem with flat terrain or descents.
Take an aluguer to Ribeira Grande and continue along the coastal road.
With the agency:
An excursion to Cruzinha with a short walk.
Return to Porto Novo via the path from Cova to… I’m not sure where yet, to pick up the car for Porto Novo, since we’ll be taking the ferry that evening.
We’ll have a guide for this hike.
We’d love to spend a day in Tarrafal, but getting back requires a boat or taxi, and it’s really expensive!
We’re a couple, 78 and 76 years old.
What do you think of this itinerary?
Not very well known: Hokkaido Island has national parks that rival those in North America. Hiking there is free (even many mountain huts) and requires no formalities. These treks are described in the LP *Hiking in Japan* guide—you can just buy the Hokkaido PDF. It’s way better than Mount Fuji. Of course, everything depends on the weather, which is very unstable in the Japanese mountains (frequent strong winds). The trails are often obstacle courses.
The Daisetsu Zan traverse is a stunning hike through volcanic terrain with a remote section in the middle that requires at least one night of camping (there are basic huts for the rest, which is popular with Japanese hikers): 4 to 6 days.
The Shiretoko traverse takes 2 days with views including an island in Russia, but the ridge is brown bear territory—there are even more here than in Denali National Park in Alaska (brown bears and grizzlies are the same). I ran into 7 in just 6 hours of hiking!

I’m looking for tips from people who know this section well (Coutances → Regnéville-sur-Mer → Hauteville-sur-Mer → Bréhal → Granville → Genêts → bay crossing):
Budget-friendly accommodations: I’m struggling to find affordable stopover lodgings (a lot of what I find online are expensive vacation rentals, not really suited for a solo hiker). If you have any great spots (hostels, hiker-friendly B&Bs, nice campgrounds), I’d love to hear them!

We’re planning to do the 4-day trek from Mestia to Ushguli without an agency. The descriptions mention that there are accommodations at each stop, but we can’t find any details about them. Has anyone got info or feedback on this route?
I'm developing a free and open-source web app for planning walking and cycling trips (and even car trips). You can create a route by clicking directly on the map to add waypoints, and it can consist of multiple stages. The app provides tools to edit the stages and the overall route, and to display useful information (distances, altitudes, and elevation changes). A relief profile can be shown as a graph for a specific stage or the entire route.
Once the route is ready, it can be exported as a GPX file, which can then be used with a GPS or a mobile navigation app.
The app is built in JavaScript and runs entirely in the web browser. It uses the Leaflet library and several OpenStreetMap-based services. Initially developed for my personal needs (I enjoy hiking and cycle touring), I’d be happy to share it with anyone who might find it useful. It’s free to use, doesn’t require an account, and the source code is available.
New to this forum, I’m planning a pretty big project for 2028.
I’m heading to Nepal to do a trek from Kathmandu all the way to Everest Base Camp (a cool 5,300 m 😄).
This trek is a bit special because even though I’ll be part of a group, I’m going solo (so far, no problem—I’m used to it). But it’s my first real trek, and it’s also a humanitarian one: once I reach base camp, I’ll stay an extra week to help clean up the waste left by tens of thousands of climbers! Since I’m originally from South America, from two countries that share the Andes, I have a deep respect for mountains—they fascinate me. So Everest… it’s kind of the trip of a lifetime!
So, a little question for those who’ve done treks to Everest before… any tips for good mental preparation (I’m already working on the physical side)?

Hello, I’d like to embark on a little trip in my home country, Switzerland. I’ll start walking from La Cure, heading toward Le Noirmont first, then I’ll improvise my route—but it’ll probably follow the French border... at least as far as Lac de Joux.
I’ll decide day by day how much farther to go after that. My goal is to stay in nature as much as possible, wander around for as long as I can, and restock food in villages or towns along the way.
I’m thinking of mostly camping, but we’ll see if I end up in a hotel or another campsite depending on my route.
I’d love to reach La Chaux-de-Fonds on foot... maybe even Delémont.
The whole thing should take about a week, give or take.
I’ll be bringing my dog, and I’m preparing for this as soon as I’m ready.
Any tips to make sure everything goes smoothly for us? Things I should know—or avoid? What about shepherds with their flocks of sheep? And isn’t hunting season open right now?

Hi, this might not be the right section, but I’d like to know if it’s possible to start mountaineering with another person without necessarily hiring a guide. We’ve done quite a bit of hiking but not mountaineering—we’ll just do a half-day glacier course. After that, we were thinking of starting with La Grande Motte and the Pointe de la Traversière, which were recommended to us. Honestly, for things like roping up and knots, I’ll learn at home with lots of videos and a book.
I’d love to know if anyone has done treks in the Rwenzori Mountains and how much it costs on average, what the infrastructure is like, the landscapes, and safety in the area. Thanks so much! I’m really looking forward to your replies.
We’re leaving in 9 days for a two-week trip to Madeira, mainly to hike.
From my research, I’ve found that since last year, access to most trails—and systematically for the most popular ones—is now paid. You have to pay an access fee of 4.50 € per person per classified hike in 2026, and even 10.50 € for the most iconic hike: Pico Arieiro to Pico Ruivo. When paying, you also have to choose a day and a 30-minute time slot for your start time. Of course, this reservation is neither changeable nor refundable, even if the weather that day is terrible.
Personally, given the massive influx of tourists to the island in recent years, I don’t mind paying a fee to help maintain the trails. Similarly, setting a limit on the number of people who can hike them per day is certainly preferable to preserve this priceless heritage.
However, what’s much less fair is that in reality, most of the available spots are reserved: 1/ for Madeira residents (which is normal); 2/ for "economic operators" (meaning local tour operators). For example, if you’re a non-resident (independent tourist), no booking is possible for the Pico Arieiro hike for an early morning start before September! So, unfortunately, we’ll have to skip this hike.
It’s the same issue for Ponta de São Lourenço, the 25 Fontes, Pico Ruivo... in short, all the most popular hikes. Oh well, we’ll skip those too!
So my question is: which hikes do you recommend where we won’t face the huge crowds that the others get? And where we can book the day before for the next day, taking the weather into account?
Finally, a quick accommodation question: we’ve booked the first week in Funchal, but I haven’t decided yet for the second week. Do you have any advice on where to stay in the south or north, preferably avoiding overly concrete-heavy and touristy spots?

We’re planning to do day hikes and want to stay a few days in one spot, do a few hikes, then move on to our next camping spot. Could you share your favorite spots or any recommendations for places to spend a few days with great hikes?
A few details:
We arrive in early August and leave in early September.
We’re looking for day hikes (or shorter), moderate difficulty, with a cumulative elevation gain of no more than 1000m, and of course, beautiful scenery!
We’d prefer not to drive too much—maybe it’s best not to head too far south and deal with unnecessary heat?
Along the same lines, if you know of any great campgrounds where we can start our hike directly without needing the car, we’d love to hear your suggestions!

I visited for a few days in November 2018—not for hiking but just to explore—and the weather wasn’t great, especially in the mountains. So, is a star-shaped itinerary doable if I rent a car and maybe use two different accommodations?
I’m not planning to join an organized group—just traveling with one other person and organizing things ourselves—unless you’d recommend a local agency or guide. Finally, even though I’ll be getting maps, a topo guide, and a GPS, I’d really appreciate your top hiking recommendations.

I’d like to get some info about the GR10 Pyrenees traverse. I need help planning the daily stages and accommodations—my wife isn’t an experienced hiker but walks a lot, so I’d like to schedule shorter walking days and thus a longer overall trip in terms of number of days.

I’d like to do the Mare a Mare Sud in May over 4 days. I’ve found quite a few places to stay along the route, but I’m stuck on the start and finish.
I’ll be arriving by plane on Sunday evening and would like to start pretty early on Monday morning. Ideally, accommodation right at the trailhead (Alzu di Gallina) would be amazing, but I can’t find anything. Any tips?
Also, for the transfer from Figari Airport to Porto Vecchio or Alzu di Gallina?
At the end, I’d like to pick up a rental car—any advice on that too?
I’m traveling solo by plane to Catania in May and plan to hike the northern side of Etna, starting from Linguaglossa where I’ll arrive by bus. After that, I’d love some info on how to get up to Piano Provenzana (shuttles or hitchhiking), since it seems there’s no public transport except in the summer. Can you sleep there in a free or cheap refuge, or camp? And how far up can you go without having to hire a guide? Thanks in advance. Bernard.
