Mauritius: Looking for snorkeling beaches and hiking ideas

Hi there,

My flight ticket to Mauritius is booked, and my accommodations are all set.

The plan: relaxation, hiking, and swimming...😛

I’m looking for hiking ideas anywhere on the island (I’ll have a car). Nothing over 15 km round trip and a maximum of 500 m elevation gain. (A little more if it’s an exceptional hike.)

I’m also searching for beaches where I can do some snorkeling without needing to take a boat or join an excursion.

I’ve seen that sea kayaking tours are available. Is it possible to just rent a kayak, and which spots on the island are best for easy kayaking?

If you have other suggestions (villages, viewpoints, etc.) for independent excursions, I’m all ears!😉

Thanks🙂

Hi,

I’m looking for hiking ideas anywhere on the island (I’ll have a car): no more than 15 kilometers round trip and a maximum of 500 m elevation gain.

The hike up Le Morne Brabant (starting from Le Morne) is nice (great view from the summit) if it’s not too hot. It’s about 7 km with 500 m elevation gain... You can stop before the summit. The last kilometer is a bit steep but not dangerous. You return the same way.

I saw that sea kayaking excursions are organized. Is it possible to just rent a kayak, and which spots on the island are good for this? (Easy level)

What I know: 1- You can rent kayaks at Pointe des Sables to paddle along the rocks to Albion Lighthouse and explore several caves, but it’s pretty choppy! I’d recommend a guided tour...

2- It’s not on the sea but on a river (very easy) with a start in Tamarin Bay... In Tamarin (a village in the southwest of the island), right at the mouth of the river of the same name, there’s a kayak rental place. They’re mainly used to go up the Rivière du Rempart and the Rivière Tamarin. The latter is more interesting—you enter a "little jungle," might see monkeys, and the river narrows in a mangrove until you’re touching vegetation on both sides. Beautiful views of Rempart Mountain... In Tamarin Bay, you can also see dolphins if you get up early or so they say. Personally, I haven’t seen any.

What I don’t know but have observed:

3- I haven’t done it, but you can also go from Le Morne to Île aux Bénitiers... In my opinion, nothing technical, but it might be a bit long and... monotonous? I don’t know if rentals are available, but guided tours definitely are.

Hey Bruno,

Not for now—you’ll have to be patient! 😉

The only thing I can say for now is that Mauritius is the cheapest of the three...

Hi Agnès

I spent 3 weeks there in March 2023 (Mauritius and Rodrigues). I kept a travel journal on My Atlas—I can send you the link in a DM if you're interested 😊

Hi there! What a great plan in store! 😊 For hiking without too much elevation, I recommend the Mare aux Joncs trail (in the Black River Gorges) or the Bras d’Eau trail, which is very peaceful in a eucalyptus forest. For snorkeling accessible from the beach: head to Blue Bay (a protected marine reserve with tropical fish visible just a few meters from the shore) and Pointe aux Piments, which is also really nice. For kayaking, I personally tried it in Belle Mare. You can rent a kayak at The Residence Mauritius. Otherwise, you can also rent one near Tamarin or Trou d’Eau Douce, but it all depends on the sea conditions that day—always ask locally. If you want to go beyond the postcard-perfect spots, I shared my discoveries (villages, markets, viewpoints…) in this article: Mauritius beyond the beaches. Maybe it’ll inspire you! 😊

Hello,

The hike up Le Morne Brabant is probably the most beautiful walk on the island, with spectacular views. Just be aware that the end turns into a bit of a climb—you’ll definitely need to use your hands to grip the rocks and make it to the summit.

Another classic hike is the Tamarin Falls (7 waterfalls). It’s not very well marked, especially since locals do everything they can to get you to hire a guide (they’ll even block the path with branches to stop you from passing and push their services). You’ll also need to grab onto branches and roots along the way.

Otherwise, the island’s hiking options are pretty limited, especially if you’re coming from Réunion! (haha)

Hey Ludo,

I'm not sure I'll make it all the way to Le Morne, but I've read that the views are already stunning if you stop just before the "climbing" part. I'm not sporty at all—I've got cottage cheese, not muscle, in my arms...

A lot of sites do recommend guides, but if it’s not mandatory, I’ll skip it! Maps.me is great for following a hiking route.😛

Réunion-Mauritius was the original plan for 2020. But a little virus ruined the trip. So we visited Réunion recently with some pretty tough hikes and not much beach time. Now, it’s more about ocean pleasures on the agenda...😎

Mauritius isn’t flat either (okay, the island’s highest point is under 1,000 meters), so I’m hoping to find some beautiful landscapes there too 🙂
