Hi there, I’m reaching out for some help planning a short trip to Greece at the end of April with my dad. We’ll be staying for 7 days, flying in and out of Athens, where we’ll rent a car. After quite a bit of research, we’ve decided to explore the Peloponnese, which we don’t know at all. We’ve read that basing ourselves in Nafplio for a few nights and then in Gytheio would be a good way to organize our visits. Here are the main spots we’ve noted so far: Corinth (just the canal, as the rest seems to have little interest based on what we’ve read), Mycenae, Epidaurus, Nafplio, Monemvasia, and Mystras. Could you help us figure out the best route to take? Are there other places worth considering given the time we have? Thanks so much in advance for your help!

Hi there,

Seven days is already pretty good! I don’t think you’ll have time to add anything else.

For the itinerary, once you pick up your car in Athens, head toward Nafplio, stopping at the Corinth Canal first, then Nafplio. The next day, visit Epidaurus, then Mycenae the day after. The surrounding area is lovely too, especially the little port of Ancient Epidaurus. Nafplio is also a really nice town—you can take a boat trip to Bourtzi.

Then head down to Gytheio (about a 2-hour drive). The next day, visit Mystras, and the day after, Monemvasia (a 1-hour drive from Gytheio). For the return trip to Athens, you can either take the highway (about 4 hours) or drive along the coastal road—it’ll take longer, but if you’ve got time, it’s nice to stop for lunch or coffee near Leonidio or Astros.

Have a great trip!

Hi there,

Corinth (just the canal, the rest isn’t worth much according to what we’ve read)

Having been there twice, I completely disagree. Corinth isn’t just about the canal. Sure, the modern town isn’t very interesting, but the ancient city and the Acrocorinth site are well worth a detour. You can’t always trust what you read! 😉

There’s also the Palamidi Fortress in Nafplio, which is worth visiting and really nice. We loved this city with its port and its charming streets at night.

Don’t miss Mycenae, and be sure to visit the Treasury of Atreus, which is located just a few meters below the Mycenae site. Epidavros is stunning.

For Mystras, I recommend starting at the top of the site by car, then heading down to explore the lower part—the site is divided into two sections. A great place to eat in Mystras: Ktima Skreka.

I’ve noted other great spots on our travel journal in Greece, which follows a similar route to the one you’re planning.

Good evening everyone, and thank you so much for your feedback—it’s helping us fine-tune our plans!

So, we’re leaning toward this:

Day 1 – Arrive in Athens in the evening – Stay overnight in Artemis Day 2 – Drive to Corinth (stop at the canal), then visit Mycenae in the afternoon and stay overnight in Nafplio Day 3 – Visit Epidaurus in the morning, then explore Nafplio in the afternoon (including Palamidi Fortress), and stay a second night in Nafplio Day 4 – Leave Nafplio for Gytheio, with a stop to visit Mystras along the way. Stay overnight in Gytheio Day 5 – Visit Limeni and Areopoli (and nearby spots?). Second night in Gytheio Day 6 – Leave Gytheio to visit Monemvasia Day 7 – We’re unsure whether to stay overnight in Monemvasia before driving along the coast (maybe stopping at ancient Corinth and Acrocorinth?) to reach Athens, where our flight leaves on the evening of Day 8. What do you recommend? Any thoughts on this itinerary (maybe reversing the order?) or ideas to make our trip even better?

Thanks! 🙂

Hello

Up to day 4, that’s what we did, and your itinerary looks good. For the rest, I haven’t been there yet, so I’ll let other travelers chime in.

Hi Adrien

Your itinerary looks pretty good to me (it lets you see quite a bit without rushing too much). We did a 2-week trip around the Peloponnese (though under special circumstances—right when the borders reopened after Covid, so there were very few tourists). You might find some useful info in the travel journal I put together back then (check my profile)
