Hi everyone, Before entering Kruger Park, we’re planning a stop in Graskop on the way from Johannesburg, then spending two nights at Hippomoon Lodge. I’ve mapped out the following route for a single day between Graskop and Hippomoon Lodge, but I’m wondering if it’s a bit too packed?😐 Visit the Blyde River Canyon in a full day – approx. 180 km / 2h40 drive, leaving Graskop at 8:30 AM: - Graskop Gorge Lift on the R533 towards Hazyview - The Pinnacle Rock - Lisbon / God’s Window / Berlin Falls - Lunch at The Chubby Pig - Treur River - Bourkes Luck, Farm, Moramelo, Uitspanning (33 km from Graskop Gorge Lift) - Bourke’s Luck Potholes - Three Rondavels viewpoint - ???Hike starting from Blyde Canyon: A Forever Resort / the guinea fowl trail / Lower viewpoint - Entry to Swadini for a Boat Cruise on the Blyde River (boat excursion in the Blyde Canyon) - Blyde Dam boat cruise - Drive to Hippomoon Lodge to arrive around 5:00 PM Thanks in advance for your feedback and experiences!😎

Hi there, It depends on your arrival time in Joburg. My take on your trip: I’d recommend a stopover—rest, get your bearings, do your first grocery run, and shop locally. Personally, Crichtley Hackle Lodge. You can find gorgeous, very secure chalets for cheap. In a safe small town.

Hi, The system ate the rest 😮 Personal opinion: I think it’s too packed. Hippomoon✨ I’m wary of all the lodges that have popped up around Hoedspruit—very touristy and too "Greater Kruger" for my taste. My spots in the area: Right by Berlin Falls Simple but safe, good price. Everything you need to cook or grab a bite at Graskop Poker, even at night. More off the beaten path: Hazyview Hippohollow and their chalets Chestnut Country Lodge Pricier but amazing. Iketla Lodge For me, Panorama Road = one day max. Mix of viewpoints and short hikes. You can find quick eats at Bourke’s Luck, for example. Boat tour for a change—good idea! It’s a bit of a drive, so book way in advance. We always want to do too much…✨

Hi, thanks for your comments. I’ve got another question if you don’t mind—I’ve read on Google Maps reviews that some supermarkets get swarmed by people who insist pretty aggressively on carrying your groceries or asking you to buy them food, like at the Spar in Sabie, for example. What do you think? Is this common? I’d probably just add a little extra to my cart—it was the same thing during our road trip in Namibia... 😕

South Africa is a country with lots of small gigs—many small services based on the coin you give. It’s very Anglo-Saxon in that way. So, Right from the airport, you’ll see people with a harness offering to push your trolley to your car. You can say no or yes. Actually, it can really help you save time finding your connection, etc. Same at the supermarket… same if you park your car… Just a reminder: currently, 10 rand = 50 cents. The tip for shopping is 5 or 10 rand—same for the car, etc. For an airport trolley, 50 rand isn’t unreasonable. You’ll find clean toilets in the middle of nowhere because someone’s there. Tip. At restaurants, like in the US, they count on tips. You do or you don’t. But 10-15%, or even more. Etc., etc. The median salary is still probably under 4,000 rand. Except in rare cases, it’s not aggressive at all. It’s just that back home, all these jobs—gas station attendants, etc.—have disappeared. We’d rather struggle with a trolley or save on the tip. After that, there can be begging. Tourists = money. And Sabie is very touristy. Another example: In Pilgrim’s Rest, some people will wash your car without asking and then demand money. Personally, No problem. I take the opportunity to chat in Zulu half the time…

Really interesting and good to know. Indeed, with an average salary of 190 € per month, you can understand the tipping system.
