Hi there,

We’re heading to Japan for 34 days next summer with our 5-year-old daughter. We’ll be arriving and departing from Tokyo.

I’m currently planning our trip, and we’re constrained to head quickly to Okinawa because afterward, the prices for domestic flights rise significantly.

Here’s the rough outline of the route I’m considering. What do you think?

Thanks in advance!

1 night in Tokyo upon arrival. 7 nights in the Kyoto/Osaka area. 9 nights in Okinawa (+ Miyakojima or Ishigaki). 5 nights in the Kyushu region. 9 nights road-tripping through the Japanese Alps. 3 nights in Tokyo before departure.

Hi there,

A few notes: - It’d help to know the order of your hops. - 34 days in Japan with a 5-year-old. Temples and the buzz of big cities might not be her thing. Have you checked the weather? It’s hot (even in the Alps). - Lots of transport. - Have you already planned a route for each region? - 9 days in Okinawa: are you hitting the beaches? - A road trip in the Alps—where does it start/end? - Kyushu in 5 nights??

Could you flesh out your itinerary a bit more?

Hi there, I think 9 nights in Okinawa is a lot. On the other hand, 5 nights in Kyushu is quite short. If I were you, I’d take 4 nights off Okinawa and move them to Kyushu.

Hello,

You should flesh out your itinerary a bit more.

Hello and thank you so much for your reply!

The itinerary isn’t fully detailed here on purpose—I wanted feedback first on the order (which is the one listed) and how the days are split.

True, it’ll be very hot, but for a month-long trip, this is the only time we can go, and we’re okay with that.

For Okinawa, yes, the plan is to enjoy the beaches and visit one of the other two islands mentioned. That’s why we scheduled 9 nights—to have time to get from Okinawa to the second island. Maybe that’s too much, though? And which of the two islands would you pick?

For the Alps, it’s a classic road trip from the Lonely Planet: Nagano, Matsumoto, Kamikochi, Takayama, Shirakawa-go, Kanazawa, then heading to Kyoto.

Thanks for your reply as well. Kyushu is the part that seems the least straightforward to me. And I’m worried that if I cut 4 nights from Okinawa, I won’t have time to reach another island.

Kyushu is the part that seems the least straightforward to me.

If you need any help, don’t hesitate. I’ve been living in Kyushu for years and know my region like the back of my hand. All I can say for now is that Kyushu is huge and is best discovered by taking your time. For 5 nights, plan on exploring a maximum of two regions. I think it’s a bit of a shame because Kyushu is a stunning and very diverse island, with plenty of activities to do with kids.

And I’m worried that by cutting 4 nights from Okinawa, I won’t have time to visit another island.

So, you’d like to visit the main island of Okinawa and another island (Miyako or Ishigaki), is that right?

Either way, I still think 9 nights is a lot. If you want a truly relaxing stay in Okinawa, I’d recommend sticking to just one island: the main island, Miyako, or Ishigaki. The last two have much more charm and are less built-up. They’re both close to small islands that are easily accessible by road or boat. Five nights is ideal.

If you really want to visit two islands, then three nights on each seems good, plus an extra night to make up for travel time—so 7 nights. You could shift the other two nights to Kyushu, which would let you explore another region.

Or, you could skip Okinawa altogether and head to the Gotō Islands, where the sea is almost as beautiful as Okinawa’s😉😊

Hi there,

I also think 9 nights in Okinawa is a lot, especially for a first visit. I agree that if you want a real beach relaxation experience, it's better to focus on just one island group (Miyakojima or Ishigaki). If you choose one group, then 5 days is the minimum to get that "settled" feeling—a good compromise might be 6 days and 5 nights. There’ll be plenty to do without seeing everything or getting bored.

The alternative you were offered with the Goto Islands is very interesting and, in my opinion, worth considering. In that case, you could spend 8/9 days in Kyushu and 5/6 days in Goto.

If you only have 5 days for Kyushu, that feels really short. Why not use that time to explore another place you’re already visiting more deeply? For example, you mentioned 7 days in Kyoto and Osaka. From there, a road trip to Matsue or Tottori could be really nice, or even the Kii Peninsula.

I also think 4 days in Tokyo is too little—personally, I believe this city is THE one not to miss in Japan. It’s packed with treasures and diversity. Of course, everyone has different tastes, so it’s up to you to decide what’s most important for your trip.
