Je me présente, je m’appelle … François, 49 ans, de Grenoble. Nous avons un (très) joli projet de voyage avec ma compagne pour l’automne prochain, du 18 octobre au 4 novembre : un premier road trip dans l’ouest américain.
Au programme, on souhaite faire un mix entre des villes (surtout San Francisco) et sites incontournables pour un premier voyage dans l’ouest us. On aime bien aussi tous les deux les déserts et « l’esprit farwest ». Et on a aussi conscience que compte tenu du temps sur place - 18 jours avec les trajets en sachant que l’on décollera à 21h50 le 4 novembre de Los Angeles- « on ne pourra pas tout voir ! »
On a déjà nos billets d’avion (on a profité d’une super offre) A/R Lyon-Los Angeles ce qui implique de faire une grande boucle . On se pose aussi des questions sur la météo que l’on aura sur place à cette époque de l’année. C’est pourquoi on a choisi délibérément de ne pas visiter le parc de Yosémite.
Pour avoir parcouru pas mal de page sur cet excellent site et recueilli un max d’infos, je sais que je pourrais compter sur vos conseils pertinent pour peaufiner notre parcours … Merci d'avance !

Allez directement au Grand canyon depuis Williams.
Il est meme possible d'aller jusqu'a Tusayan a l'entree du Park du GC dans la meme journee cela en faisant un detour par Oatman sur la Route 66. Vous serez en Octobre, la duree du jour sera plus courte donc depart tres tres tot de Los Angeles😄
En suprimant votre passage a Flagstaff vous reportez cette journee a Moab ou il y a beaucoup a voir et a faire.
A Bryce Canyon, vous avez une rando, le Peek-A-Boo Trail qui demande environ 4 heures ou vous aurez moins de monde que sur la Navajo Loop.

"Halloween" a San Francisco, bonne idee, il faut aller dans le district de Castro, c'est la que vous aurez le plus d'activites. Apportez votre costume😄😎

Tu traînes beaucoup sur la côte mais ça va beaucoup trop vite dans la partie parcs nationaux. C'est dommage car je pense que l'avion, vol interne, est aussi réservé. Donc pas de grandes marges de manœuvre pour corriger ce qui ne va pas, hormis je pense, supprimer malheureusement le passage à Moab (où il faut 3 nuits sur place pour ne faire que les incontournables)

Je vais donc retravailler le projet en prenant en compte certaines remarques ... Je note en particulier que vous êtes tous d'accord pour dire qu'il faut (au moins) 1 jours supplémentaire à Moab et que la boucle par Sédona du début de parcours ne s'impose pas
PapJ59 : j'ai bien compris que la boucle par Sedona ne s'impose pas vu notre timming ... C'était une envie mais elle n'est pas indispensable !
Durandale2/Alex : je vais revoir le parcours en intégrant vos conseils. Pour San Francisco, j'irai voire votre blog et je ne manquerais pas de vous solliciter pour des infos supplémentaires. J'avais bien en tête qu'Halloween à San Francisco, cela devait bien être sympa ...
Itat : non, nous n'avons pas encore acheter de billets pour le vol intérieur Las Vegas/San Francisco. Je "mets donc du Moab" en plus dans le parcours et supprime la virée vers la Vallée de la Mort ...

Note que tu peux intégrer la Vallée de la Mort entre Los Angeles et Las Vegas et prévoir un vol interne Phoenix - San Francisco, tu passeras ainsi par Sedona.
Cela permet également d'éviter la longue route pas toujours passionnante (pressés par le temps qu'on est ... 😉) entre Los Angeles et le Grand Canyon.
après pas mal de nouvelles lectures, de carnets de route passionnants notamment, de discussions et de cogitations dans tous les sens ... Je reviens vers vous pour vous demander votre avis sur un itinéraire.
Après des intenses délibérations avec ma compagne sur ce que nous voulions voir et "vivre" en priorité, certaines destinations nous sont apparues indispensables : Death Valley, Valley of Fire, Bryce Canyon, Monument Valley, Grand Canyon bien sur mais aussi Moab, San Francisco et la Côte Pacifique, Las Végas. Au fil des lectures, j'ai aussi découvert Capitol Reef, la route scenic 12, Goblin Valley.
J'ai aussi noté qu'à la période de notre voyage, il faudra prendre en compte les journées de jour plutôt courtes et les changements d'horaires.
Bref, bien difficile de faire des choix et de rationaliser. Mais je vous soumets tout de même ce nouveau parcours et vous pose une question : irréaliste ou pas .... ?🙂

3 seuls jours pour faire le trajet entre Monument Valley et Bryce, c’est bcp trop rapide😕, d’autant que les journées seront courtes fin octobre. Il y a tant à voir sur ces routes que certains y passent l’entièreté de leur voyage😇.
Pour compléter la réponse d’Itat, c’est le CAS 1 qu’il faut favoriser : il y a tant à voir entre Moab et Tropic qu’il faut prévoir 1 nuit à Torrey :
- pour avoir le temps de voir un minimum de ce qu’il y a à voir entre Moab et Torrey,
- et avoir aussi le temps le lendemain de voir un minimum de ce qu’il y a à voir entre Torrey et Tropic.
Par contre, Bryce n’étant qu’un petit parc, il n’est pas nécessaire d’y dormir 2 nuits : il faut surtout y voir les 4 points de vue sur l’amphithéâtre des hoodoos + le sunrise + y prévoir une balade ds l’amphithéâtre (il n’est pas nécessaire de parcourir la scenic drive qui n’est pas très scénique ds son entièreté)
Pour réaliser votre projet, il faut 3 jours de plus :
J1 : Arrivée à LA
J2 : LA – Red Rock Canyon SP – Lone Pine (Alabama Hills) – Death Valley
J3 : Death Valley – Las Vegas
J4 : Las Vegas
J5 : Las Vegas – Grand Canyon

- soit vs zappez la côte et LA (et repartez depuis SF).
Mais en 18 jours, il y a moyen de faire mieux, en ne zappant que la côte:

J'ai deux contraintes avec lesquelles il me faut composer : le billet d'avion Lyon/LA est acheté (une offre immanquable de deux billets d'avion achetés pour le prix d'un seul billet !) et le nombre de jours possibles pour ce voyage ... "L'appel de la côte" reste aussi très fort.
L'option Monument Valley > Torrey sans passer par Moab était celle envisagée un temps ... Sans doute plus réaliste.Je vais donc devoir devoir faire (encore) des choix comme l'a dit Itat.
Avec le sentiment - déja- qu'il faudra revenir pour un autre voyage dans l'ouest US !!!
je reviens vers vous pour de nouveaux conseils sur un itinéraire ... Après prise en compte de moults conseils de voyageurs vers les US expérimentés et triturages dans tous les sens, j'en suis arrivé à l'évidence qu'une visite de Moab ne serait pas jouable ce coup-ci !😕
Cela dit, même en retirant Moab, j'ai encore des doutes sur le meilleur parcours entre ces 3 possibilités (parcours 1 et parcours 2 +bis) ....

J'aime bien le 1 qui commence par Grand Canyon. Je pense qu'il vaut mieux commencer par ce parc que finir par celui-ci lors d'un premier voyage.
Entre Monument Valley et Capitol Reef, vous passerez par la très belle route 95. Je laisserais tomber Valley Of The Gods (vous aurez fait Monument Valley la veille) pour plutôt faire Natural Bridges NM et prendre le temps de profiter de la 95 (pourquoi pas Little Egypt en fin de journée )
Le lendemain matin Capitol Reef : quelques visites, puis route 12 et fin d'aprem à Bryce. Rando à Bryce le lendemain matin. Cela me semble bien calé comme ça.
Voilà, c'est fini … Du moins pour le choix du parcours ! Pour le reste, il reste encore à travailler dans le détail;)
Dans l'état, j'ai intégré pas mal de vos conseils et je pense tenir le « bon bout » pour un 1er road-trip inoubliable. Je préfère commencer la boucle des parcs par Grand Canyon et après une pause à La Vegas …

Les options 2 et 2 bis ont le grand avantage de pouvoir plus approfondir la visite de Valley of Fire (puisque vs avez plus de temps à lui consacrer que l'option 1 qui, elle, permet de passer + de temps à Las Vegas), et d'y être aux bons moments que sont les fins et débuts de journée (contre l'option 1 où vs ne serez pas à Valley of Fire pour le sunrise et sans doute pas non plus pour le sunset, pressé sans doute d'arriver à Las Vegas avant la nuit).
C'est donc une question de choix .
Perso, pour cette raison, si le voyage a lieu en été, je choisirais sans hésiter l'option 2 ou 2 bis. Vu que votre voyage a lieu en octobre (où la luminosité est meilleure tout le long de la journée et la chaleur moindre qu'en été) c'est peut-être moins pertinent. Mais il n'empêche que les sunrise/sunset restent de tte façon des moments magiques à ne pas rater.
Bryce Canyon qui est un petit parc, ne nécessite pas d'y rester dormir 2 nuits (comptez 3 heures en fin de journée pour les 4 plus beaux points de vue + 1 nuit + sunrise et 3 heures de balade matinale le lendemain).
Mais il y a tant à voir entre St George et Torrey, que l'option 2 (avec 2 nuits à Bryce) peut s'envisager si vs comptez trainer en cours de route du J4 et donc n'arrivez à Bryce qu'en toute fin de journée (sans avoir le temps d'y commencer la visite), ce qui signifie trainer du côté de St George (où il existe diverses possibilités de visites) ou à Zion (où il existe aussi quantité de randos) ... Mais apparemment, ce n'est pas prévu à votre programme (et ds ce cas, vs n'arriverez pas si tard en J4 à Bryce).
Le J5 passé entièrement à Bryce (en plus de la veille) pourra donc peut-être vs sembler un peu long.
Par contre l'option 2 bis risque de ne pas laisser suffisamment de temps en J5 pour pouvoir profiter de tout ce qu'il y a à voir entre Bryce et Torrey puisque vs ne quitterez Bryce qu'en fin de matinée (après la rando).
En fait, il existe tellement de possibilités de visites (ds les parcs nationaux et hors des sentiers battus) entre St George et Monument Valley que le choix des nuits dépend du choix des visites.
Perso, j'organiserais le planning autrement pour pouvoir aussi faire des visites hors des sentiers battus, avec 1 nuit à Bryce , 1 nuit à Escalante et 1 nuit à Torrey, ou 1 nuit à Bryce , 1 nuit à Torrey et 1 nuit à Hanksville, selon le type de visites choisies.
J1 : Arrivée à LA
J2 : LA – Red Rock Canyon SP – Lone Pine (Alabama Hills) – Death Valley (fin d’aprèm > sunset)
J3 : Death Valley (matin) – Overton (visite de Valley of Fire > sunset)

Hello everyone! Really damaged due to flooding caused by runoff after forest fires (a total mess!), does anyone in this friendly forum have any updates on the Apache Trail between Apache Junction and Roosevelt Dam? Is there still a section of the road that’s tough to navigate?
We're leaving at the end of June and will be driving the route between Buffalo and Cody. We’ve already booked our accommodations and a rodeo in Cody, but during the day, we’ll be driving between the two and I’m unsure about the itinerary.
Which route do you think is the most pleasant, interesting, or scenic between:
- The northern route via Highway 14 with Sheridan, Lowell, etc.
- The southern route with Highways 16/20/14, passing by Loaf Mountain Overlook, Powder River Pass, Ten Sleep Canyon...
We’ll be in a car, so we should be able to drive on any road.

I’m almost done planning our September road trip. After our 3-night visit to Sequoia, we’ll have a stopover night in Coalinga (to break up the drive). We’ll be staying two nights in Monterey and would like to stop along the way to visit one side of Pinnacles National Park. We’re torn between the West entrance and the East entrance, and we’d like to do a short hike of no more than 2 hours since we don’t want to arrive too late in Monterey.
This park is split into two distinct zones with no connection between them, and the mileage from Coalinga to Monterey is pretty much the same for both. Which area do you recommend visiting—east or west? And which route is the most scenic?
I’ve spotted two short hikes:
- East: Moses Spring to Rim Trail Loop
- West: Balconies Cliffs Cave Loop
Has anyone been there, or do you have another hike to suggest?

After our first trip as a young couple to the West in 2007 (yes, that doesn’t make us any younger!), we’re planning to go back in 2028, but this time as a family of four! (We have two boys who’ll be 5½ and 13 years old in the summer of 2028.)
Our plan is to combine a few big cities (SF and LA, maybe San Diego) with national parks and state parks, mostly!
Ideally, we’d like to leave at the end of June and head back to France around July 19–20, so we can enjoy the first week of the Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
Since we already did the "loop" in 2007, there are must-see places we absolutely want to revisit—and especially share with our kids: Bryce Canyon, Yosemite, and above all, the Grand Canyon, which is still the most incredible thing I’ve ever seen on Earth!
On the other hand, some places didn’t leave a big impression on us for various reasons, so we’re not making them a priority: Antelope Canyon, Monument Valley, for example.
We’re planning ahead, but might as well be smart about it😏
Do you have any tips for a fun and doable itinerary over about 20–25 days with kids, without rushing?

Just a quick question about King Canyon and Sequoia National Park.
Before our night in Miramonte, we plan to visit King Canyon. The next stop will be two nights in Three Rivers to explore Sequoia National Park. I wanted to go all the way to Roaring River Falls on the King Canyon Scenic Byway and then turn back to head to Miramonte. Since we’re coming from Oakhurst, Google Maps says it’s 300 km and 5 hours of driving. Since we also want to hike to see the sequoias (Big Stump Area and Grand Grove) before tackling the King Canyon Scenic Byway, the timing’s going to be tight. How far do you recommend going before turning back to miss as few points of interest as possible on the King Canyon Scenic Byway? Thanks for your advice, and have a great evening!

I’d like to travel along I-15N from San Diego to Las Vegas with my mom, who’s 67. We’ve explored Northern California and the California Coast over the past two years and now want to continue through the desert.
There are several attractions along the way:

- Desert Discovery Center and visit the Old Woman meteorite
- Joshua Tree National Park
- Mojave Desert
- Mojave National Preserve
- Anza-Borrego Desert State Park
- Silverwood Lake
My mom has back issues that prevent her from hiking or walking on trails with elevation changes. Is it possible to visit these places by car, or are the routes flat enough?
I’d love for her to experience the desert with an itinerary adapted to her condition. I’m also open to other points of interest that aren’t mentioned. We have 3-4 days for the trip, so we’re not in a rush—just want to explore.
I’d love to take a road trip and visit Nova Scotia. I’d appreciate some info on the best cities to see and the most interesting spots. The trip should last about 10 to 15 days, staying in hotels or motels. Thanks in advance!

Are most of the viewpoints (Balancing Rock, Granite Cave, Bonsai Rock, etc.) right by the road, or do you have to hike to reach them?
**Donner Memorial State Park:**
Is it worth making a detour to Truckee to visit this park and the Truckee historic downtown?

I’m a total USA addict. I’ve already done several road trips, including the East Coast and West Coast.
I’m here today because I’m planning to go back for another road trip on the West Coast. Possibly with one of my sisters and a couple of friends. It’s still just a plan for now, but I’m working on an itinerary in the meantime. Ideally, I’d leave in 2026, but I don’t have the exact dates yet—maybe April-May or September-October.
My last trip to the West Coast was in September 2014. We went for 2 weeks, but this time it’d be 3 weeks. What made me want to go back was simply a colleague who just left today. As I’m writing this, he’s on the plane. I’m so happy for him, but now all I can think about is going back.
Since I recently went to NY, I noticed that prices have really gone up. I assume the same is true for the West Coast? For 2 people over 3 weeks, what budget should I expect? We’re the type to watch our spending and find great tips.
I think we’ll arrive in San Francisco like the first time and leave from either Los Angeles or Las Vegas.

I assume many of you already know, but the America the Beautiful annual pass, which was $80, will increase to $250 starting January 1, 2026.
So if you're planning to travel before the end of December 2026, it's in your best interest to buy your pass in December 2025, since it will still cost $80 and be valid until the end of December 2026 if you purchase it in December 2025.
This price increase only applies to non-U.S. residents.
Additionally, for those who planned to visit just one park, a $100 surcharge per person will apply to access a list of 11 national parks...
For example, if there are 4 of you in a car, you’ll have to pay $35 + $400,
which comes to $435 to visit one of the 11 parks on the list (I don’t have all of them... Bryce, Zion, Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Grand Teton, etc.).
Total madness.
The goal is to push people who only visit one park into buying the annual pass.
Last point: free entry days are over for non-residents!

We just finished 9 days in the American West and wanted to share our experience because we had an amazing time.
I know some of you might ask, why use an agency? Honestly, we didn’t really feel like doing all the driving and planning, especially since we didn’t know the area at all. And since our English isn’t great, having French-speaking guides was a big comfort.
