Mais, tu n'auras aucun mal à trouver un guide indépendant (?) à Rantepao, c'est d'ailleurs eux qui viendront te démarcher dans les hotels, guesthouse ou restaurant...
oui, le but serait de trouver un guide indépendant et bouger 3 jours... est-ce que par hazard tu es passé par Ratutumnonga ? c'est tout à côté de rantepao... penses tu que je trouverais aussi un guide là-bas ? le truc c'est que j'arriverais dans le coin en fin de journée et je voulais éviter de perdre un jour à trouver un guide...
Je présume que tu veux parler de Batutumonga qui est à 25km au nord de Rantepao; il y a 4 ou 5 hôtels-guesthouse. Et donc fatalement, un fils, un frère, un cousin, un oncle ou une voisin qui sera guide.
Sinon, je ne comprends pas bien ce que tu veux dire par guide indépendant? Il y a une association de guides à Rantepao, mais tous font la tournée des hotels et restaurants pour trouver des clients. Il y a tellement peu de touristes que ton arrivée ne passera pas inappercue même tard le soir...
tout d'abord laisse moi te dire qu'il faut être prudent au niveau des horaires de déplacement; l'Indonésie étant régie par les lois du marché il faut quelquefois attendre, ce n'est pas le client qui est roi mais celui qui offre - contre monnaies sonnantes et trébuchantes - ses services.
Tout ça pour dire :
espérer aller de Denpasar à Rantepao en une journée me paraît possible mais très alléatoire, compte plutôt deux jours. Peut être pour "gagner" du temps, l'idéal serait de chopper un bus qui va à Rantepao juste devant l'aéroport, de l'autre côté de la "grand route" puisqu'on roule à gauche (si, si). En effet si tu vas à la gare des bus (quelques Km en direction du centre - centre qui est à 20/25km de l'aéroport) tu devras peut être ronger ton frein en attendant que le bus se remplisse ou se charge de toute sorte de marchandises. les bus Alam Indah vont à Rantepao; c'est souvent inscrit sur le pare-brise. De Makassar (oublie Ujung Pandang - c'est d'ailleurs Pandang car Padang c'est à Sumatra-, vieux nom), il faut compter 8h de trajet (1 crevaison comprise) jusqu'à Rantepao.
guide à Rantepao, doit y en avoir autant que de coqs; je te conseille de loger à la Wisma Maria; là comme il est dit dans une réponse plus haut les guides te trouveront bien; sinon en allant manger au Mart's café ou Mambo Restaurant, ils t'y rencontreront aussi. J'ai pas fait appel à des guides mais il m'est arrivé de discuter avec certains qui parlaient un bon français. Les "grands classiques" du Pays Toraja sont assez proches de Rantepao; voici 3 lieux incontournables : Palawa (pour le village) - Lemo (pour les tautau) - Tampangallo (grotte avec tautau et ossements dans cadre naturel des plus jolis). Pour s'y rendre j'avais loué un vélo près du terrain de foot mais pas en très bon état (prix à la journée, à marchander entre 10.000 et 20.000 Rp); on loue plus facilement des motos mais c'est pas ma tasse de thé, question de vélosophie.
pour aller de Rantepao à Pedolo il faut compter 10/11h de trajet avec probablement un changement de bus à Palopo (ne me parlez plus de Palopo). Les bus Litha vont de Makassar à Poso (via Palopo) et peut être au-delà et sont corrects (ils changent même les plaquettes de frein au bord de la route durant le trajet, c'est dire qu'ils ne lésinent pas sur la sécurité !!). De Pendolo à Tentena la route est grandiose mais c'est 3 heures sans incidents pour 60 Km. Je ne pense pas qu'il existe encore une liaison par bateau à travers le lac Poso, à moins d'en louer un.
Tentena ... lieu de sinistre mémoire car c'est sur le marché de cette petite ville autrefois touristique qu'a eu lieu fin mai 2005 un attentat à la bombe qui fit des dizaines de victimes; depuis c'est la sinistrose et tout semble s'être arrêté, plus de touristes (les Indonésiens en premier lieu) et une ambiance plombée; d'autant plus que quand j'y suis passé le ciel était noir de nuages et le lendemain matin de mon arrivée il s'est mis à pleuvoir ce qui m'a terriblement refroidi et je n'ai eu qu'une seule envie ce fut de gagner Makassar au plus tôt d'autant plus que j'avais la possibilité d'y prendre un bateau pour ensuite aller jusqu'à l'île de Sumba mais ce plan à foirer à cause de l'entretien du bateau en question. Donc Tentena comme base pour la visite du parc de Lore Lindu c'est peut être/certainement possible mais c'est beaucoup de discussions et d'argent.
de Tentena à Poso, c'est deux heures de trajet, on descend de la "montagne"
après je connais pas car je venais de Palu et de Tanjung Karang où il y a moyen de plonger; Palu a des liaisons aériennes pour Denpasar et même Singapour (à vérifier, of course); je dis ça car pourquoi faut-il aller aux îles Togian alors qu'on peut plonger à Tanjung Karang; mais les Togian ce doit être très beau (mais aussi assez "out of nowhere") d'après tous les témoignages; voilà j'dis ça et j'dis rien; de Tentena c'est 10/11heures pour gagner Palu et de là T. Karang.
Donc, petit conseil : voir un peu plus large au niveau du timing.

Cela dépend de ce que tu cherches.
Rantepao est une grosse bourgade avec plus d'animations, plus de possibilités de transports qu'à Batutumonga, qui est plus "calme" et plus isolé.
Sinon côté trek, celui que nous avons fait (1 jour 1/2) s'apparentait plus, pour un montagnard, à une promenade du dimanche. Mais, il doit être possible de s'entendre avec un guide pour en faire un plus long et plus "musclé"...
Super programme, Lionel ! Différentes remarques en vrac :
Batutumonga, c'est super pour marcher (y aller en bemo et revenir à pied à Rantepao par exemple). Pour dormir, c'est possible, mais très tranquille et surtout excentré par rapport aux autres sites à visiter. Une nuit sur place peut-être (pour profiter de la beauté de l'endroit), mais Rantepao est vraiment plus pratique (et assez agréable en plus).
Attention, contrairement à ce que disent les guides (Routard et Lonely), il n'y a plus de bateau entre Pendolo et Tentena (info valable en aout 08) ! Sinon, Tentena est effectivement désert, mais j'ai pas trouvé ça trop déprimant (avec le soleil toutefois). Pas de problème au niveau sécurité (toujours en aout 08).
Sur Kadidiri, évite les 2 resorts pour plongeurs (Black Marlin et Kadidiri Paradise), même si tu plonges... Cher, bouffe pas terrible et vols dans les chambres d'après plusieurs touristes rencontrés sur place. Par contre, sur la même plage (tout à droite en arrivant par bateau), tu as toute la petite famille d'Aka qui sera ravie de t'accueillir dans sa pension 'Lestari' ! 3-4 bungalows très simples (pas de sanitaires privatifs), mais l'accueil est fantastique, comme les repas (que tu vas pêcher avec Aka le soir, voir photo jointe). Et ça ne t'empêche pas de plonger avec Black Marlin qui est à 20 mètres de là.
Denpasar-Rantepao en une journée, c'est pas gagné mais pas impossible non plus car le terminal de bus pour Rantepao est à côté de l'aéroport.
Par contre, aller de Luwuk à Senaru (sur Lombok) en une journée (le mercredi 22), ça me parait complètement irréaliste ! Rien que de l'aéroport de Mataram jusqu'à Senaru, il doit y avoir pas loin de 3h de route (et en taxi en plus). Il faudrait que tu puisses enchaîner tes 3 avions en un temps record. Mais tu as peut-être trouvé cet enchainement parfait...

I’d love to get some feedback on our itinerary—it’s probably pretty basic! This is our second trip to Asia and our first to Indonesia. We have three kids aged 20, 18, and 12. We land in Jakarta at 4 PM, spend 3 nights/2 days there, then take the train to Yogyakarta for 3 nights/2 days, followed by the train to Surabaya for 2 nights/1 day, then the train to Bromo for 1 day/1 night, a private driver to Ijen for 2 nights/2 days, then on to Bali (Ubud) for 4 nights/3 days, followed by Gili Air for 3 nights/2 days, Senggigi (Lombok) for 2 nights, and finally 5 nights in Kuta. I’m considering cutting the 2 nights in Senggigi to just keep Kuta and extend it to 7 nights. In Lombok, I’m not sure how to get around since I’m not comfortable with scooters... Your thoughts on all of this, and any advice, are more than welcome—don’t hesitate!
For those wondering why cities like Jakarta and Surabaya: we don’t often get the chance to visit big Asian cities, so we wanted to include that discovery in our trip. The trains between Jakarta and Yogyakarta, Surabaya and Probolinggo are booked. The return flight from Lombok to Jakarta is also set. Accommodations are booked but flexible (same for the trains).

I didn’t plan to return to Thailand this year, but my health conditions mean it’ll be the best place for me to stay between two trips to India. The tourism setup there is so well-organized that it’s the most "comfortable" country for a short visit. Thailand feels too sanitized for my taste, and there’s too much religion, Buddha, and the King, but it’s still the best option given how my health has been evolving. I’d considered two weeks in ThaTon for hiking, but I got too sick from the burn-offs during my trips to the mountains around Chiang Rai. So I’m not sure where to go this year. Definitely not the sea, touristy spots, or the mountains with burn-offs...

In 1996, we crossed Vietnam from Saigon to Hanoi by motorbike—Minsk bikes we bought in Saigon. I haven’t been back since, and it seems like a lot has changed.
- We’re heading to the south (well, the north and center) with the family in July-August (3 people).
- Is the road network more developed now? Back then, there was only National Route 1 from south to north. I’m thinking of renting a car this time (no motorbike with the family—though in ’96, they had a Jawa sidecar for sale, and we hesitated… maybe it’s for the best).
- Is Halong Bay really something to avoid because of overtourism? Even back then, it was pretty crowded. Is there a less touristy alternative?
- We’ll be traveling from Hanoi down to Danang (the only city we didn’t stop in back in ’96). Even though it’s a bit overhyped in a Chinese-tourist kind of way (from what I’ve read), we’re only going for the beach—pure relaxation for 7 days. The beaches are stunning, and I know the South China Sea is warm like coffee.
- Then, we’ll visit Hoi An, where I stopped in ’96. It was already popular with backpackers back then, but no glowing boats or all the touristy fuss!
- After that, Hue, where I have great memories—it’s a beautiful city.
- And also the nature around Ninh Binh, followed by 2-3 days in Hanoi.
That’s the plan. I’d love to hear any tips to avoid mass tourism, and if anyone’s done this before:
- Is it possible to rent a car in Danang and drop it off in Hanoi?

I’m struggling to wrap up the end of my itinerary, even though it’s pretty straightforward (long but simple).
Last year, we did Malaysia (KL and the mainland + around Kuching).
Day 1 – Arrive in Kota Kinabalu early, stroll around town and hit the must-sees.
Day 2 – Excursion to Tunku Abdul Rahman Park, snorkeling at 3 islands.
Day 3 – Hike around Mount Kinabalu without summiting (450 per person, no way).
Day 4 – Poring Hot Springs + evening flight to Sandakan.
Day 5-6-7 – Kinabatangan River (still looking for the right guide).
Day 8 – Sepilok for the orangutans, the Sun Bear Centre, and Rainforest Discovery Centre.
Day 9 – Selingan, turtle island.
Day 10 – Head to Semporna.
Day 11-12-13-14 – Sipadan, Mabul, Kapalai.
Day 15 – Bohey Dulang.
Day 16 to Day 25: I’M STUCK.
I looked into Danum Valley, but for 3 days/2 nights, they’re quoting 650 € per person—come on, that’s ridiculous.
I checked out a detour into Indonesia (still East Borneo), but I’m having trouble deciding what would be amazing.
I read about Sangalaki + Kakaban (2 islands, 1 base) / Mahakam Delta - Kutai (orangutans and river) / Sungai Boh (Dayak Kayan) – jungle & culture.
But honestly, I’m struggling to finalize this itinerary.
If we venture that way, we’d head back to KK from Balikpapan.
For a 4-month stay in Egypt, I had ENORMOUS problems. The regulations are very bureaucratic and extremely nitpicky there. For a 4-month stay in the Philippines, I was wondering if the procedures are just as complicated? I’m bringing my cell phone with an eSIM. Should I choose a plan from Canada for use in the Philippines, or should I get a plan only once I arrive? After 30 days, do I renew with the Canadian provider I chose before leaving, or do I switch to a local company? Do I need to register my phone with the authorities in the Philippines? (That was the case in Egypt.) For the 3rd and 4th months, will it be just as simple—renewing with a Canadian or local provider—or should I expect problems?

We like to decide things on the spot and go with the flow, without rushing everywhere. But I’m still a bit unsure: when heading down to the center (Hue), is it better to book the overnight trains in advance? We don’t want to take any flights while we’re there—just use the overnight train for the long trips. But I’m worried we won’t get seats if we buy the tickets on the spot, say, 2 days before. My girlfriend and I booked our tickets with Saudia Airlines for a trip to Thailand this summer, from July 5th to August 3rd. Given the geopolitical situation in the Middle East, we’re keeping a close eye on the news.
I was wondering if anyone here is in the same situation as us?
• Have you heard anything about possible mass cancellations or if the airline is still maintaining its routes to Asia?
• Are there any travelers who’ve recently returned who could tell us if air corridors have been changed (longer flight times)?
