Private transfer company between central and northern Thailand

Hi there,

Does anyone know of a private transfer or taxi company that organizes transfers from the Sukhothai area to Chiang Mai? Our routes are Sukhothai-Lampang, Lampang-Chom Thong, and Chom Thong-Chiang Mai. My searches on Google Maps, 12Go, and others haven’t turned up much...

For our Bangkok-Sukhothai trips, I use a company I’ve already tried, but they don’t have a fleet available from Sukhothai and have to go through third-party companies—which, understandably, take their commission. This nearly doubles the prices...

There are four of us, and we’re not traveling light, so a minibus isn’t an option. ;-)

Thanks for your tips! DrSnuggle

Hi, I’ll let the experts on long-distance private transfers answer you. Just so you know, in Thailand, only Thais are legally allowed to work in tourist-related activities like driver, guide, escort, or any similar role. There’s no legal way for a non-Thai to do this. Occasionally, you might find unscrupulous Westerners offering paid driver services under the table on forums. On roads up to around 200 kilometers inside the borders, police checks can be frequent.

Hi, I avoid public minibuses for safety reasons—they’re packed, and the drivers go crazy. On the other hand, we took a Bangkok to Sukhothai bus that was super comfortable and air-conditioned, stopping at well-equipped stations with restaurants... and restrooms. We had suitcases and backpacks, and the bus staff stowed our luggage in the hold and gave us a ticket. Same process to retrieve them. It’s even better than the SNCF buses in my region!

There are tons of bus companies in Thailand. The Airbnb staff kindly helped us buy the tickets and even wrote down directions in Thai in case we needed help finding the platform in the huge bus terminal.

For Lampang, we took a less luxurious bus, but the trip was shorter. And we did Lampang to Chiang Mai in a shared taxi for four—one of us had a serious infection, but it wasn’t too expensive.

Another year, we traveled from Bangkok’s bus terminal to Prachuap Khiri Khan in a shared taxi arranged by our host. The driver was good, and the price was competitive. Hosts have no reason to recommend bad services—bad reviews spread fast online.

You’ll find shared taxis everywhere in tourist areas, so don’t worry. Safe travels.

Hi Gaura, You're not taking the helicopter to Versailles?

I avoid public minibuses

So how about this?:

Hello,

Thanks for your feedback. DrSnuggle

Hi,

Hire a transport company. Get a 6- or 8-seater minibus to have maximum space for luggage.

Yeah, thanks, that’s exactly the point of my post... 😛

You can easily find tons of transport companies covering the route from Sukhothai to Hua Hin, but it’s a bit trickier for the north.

Personally, a Toyota Fortuner/Innova would work just fine for us—there are four of us and three suitcases. No need for a minibus for just four people. That’s the type we used last year, and it worked perfectly. It was obviously a Thai company with a Thai driver, too.

There’s also the "day-by-day" option through your accommodation, but I prefer to have my lodging and transport sorted before I leave and just go with the flow for activities and sightseeing once I’m there—it’s just a personal choice...

Hello! All good then!!!

I don’t see the point of posting questions on the forum if you’ve already made up your mind.

There are forum members who happily respond and do research—don’t forget that! Thanks......

Regarding the Fortuner/Innova:

The seat next to the driver is great. As for the three seats in the back, I doubt they’re very comfortable for passengers.

Hi,

Everything's good then!!!

Well no, he still hasn't sorted out his transport from Sukhothai further north, has he?

Hi,

Our routes are Sukhothai-Lampang, Lampang-Chom Thong, and Chom Thong-Chiang Mai.

There's one thing I'm not sure I understood correctly: do you want to do all this in a single day of travel?

Hi,

1. My first post was actually to find a transport provider for the north of the country... and the answer suggested was "use a transport company"... note the ironic emoji...

2. I also explained that last year, as a family, we used Fortuner-style transfers and it worked perfectly for us... it’s a choice that doesn’t need commentary... I think squeezing 4 people into a privatized van for 9-12 is absurd, but that’s just our opinion...

3. I’ve always had great respect for people who respond selflessly and thoroughly on travel forums. They’ve helped me—here and elsewhere—prepare our first trip in the most helpful way.

Regarding Songsam: No, these three trips are spaced out over time. We stay about 2-3 nights in each destination, except in Chiang Mai, where we’re extending our stay. I’m waiting for a few responses. If these offers don’t work out, I’ll go with my usual provider, who we had a great experience with in 2025.

Hello, you can also rent a double-cab pickup—it’s great for 4 people, you load your gear in the back, and boom, you’ve got all the freedom of having your own vehicle and stopping wherever you want. Didn’t you consider this option?

Hi there, Just a quick note—I’ve been a member of this forum since 2008. As you can see from my profile, I’ve made fifty trips to Thailand and many other destinations. I love this travel forum—it’s all about sharing and way friendlier than others out there. Whenever I can, I try to help other members by answering their questions. Of course, it’s up to you whether you read my advice or not. But I’ve never been one to stir up trouble here. Anyway, happy travels with your plans!

Hello,

No, it's a family trip, driving on the left on busy long-distance routes—basically, I'm terrified of making a mistake out of inattention...
