Hi there, I’m planning a trip to Thailand from October 16 to 29, 2025, with my two teens. We’d love to explore Southern Thailand (for the beaches...). I’ve read that it’s the end of the rainy season—do you think it’s a bad idea or not? Also, I’m familiar with traffic in Asian countries—it’s pretty challenging. Do you think I should go through an agency for a well-defined itinerary? Or do you have any tips for hotels and getting around? Looking forward to hearing from you, and thanks in advance! 😊 Mylène

Hi,

Do you think I should go through an agency for a well-defined itinerary?

No.

Do you have any tips for (...) getting around?

It depends on the destinations—you should start by choosing those.

Thanks Thierry for your reply 😊 So according to you, I plan my itinerary and look for my hotels. Just a question about traffic and weather. I was thinking of renting scooters even though I’m nervous with the teens. And do you think we’ll be able to enjoy the south at the end of October?

I was thinking of renting scooters

Be careful—even though rental shops won’t ask for it, you *must* have the proper motorcycle license. It’s best to be fully legal because, during police checks, tourists who aren’t (legal) become cash cows. If you don’t have the right license, remember that no insurance covers illegal activities. Also, keep in mind that not all Thais are 😎 inclined to follow traffic rules (they often do things we wouldn’t even dare imagine back home), and on top of that, the norm is that the bigger vehicle has the right of way… To wrap up this list of "good news," it seems that in beach destinations popular with foreign tourists, scooter rental scams—like "damage to the bike that was already there when you picked it up but you didn’t notice, and now you’re being asked to pay for it when you return it"—are common.

even though I’m nervous with the teens.

Plus…

And do you think we’ll be able to enjoy the south at the end of October?

I’ve only been to non-beach towns in the south. For beach areas, it’s best to wait for answers from those who know them well.
