Hi there, Just a question that’s probably been asked before (though usually the other way around for my situation :)) My wife and I are heading to the US. On her ticket, it only has her maiden name (e.g., Martine DUPOND). On her passport, it’s written as Martine DUPOND épouse AVRY. No issues for travel, I hope I did the right thing with the ticket? Then for the ESTA, is just Martine DUPOND enough, or do I need to include the "épouse AVRY" part like on the passport? Thanks in advance!

My wife's passport only has her maiden name, so I do it like this: Flight ticket: in her maiden name ESTA: in her maiden name

Even though we've been married since her passport was issued, at least there's no problem because everything is under the same name.

Thanks for your reply! We were thinking of doing it that way, yes, but we got the passport after the tickets since we're leaving in April. And when we got the passport, they told us we *had* to include the married name afterward (since it's the same on her ID card).

Do the ESTA with the name as it appears on your passport

When you apply for the ESTA, the procedure clearly states to put the name between the chevrons, which logically is your birth name (maiden name for a woman).

So far, it also works with the married name if it’s on the passport. But that could change.

By the way, it’s best to get the ESTA before booking your flight ticket...

Okay, thanks! We’ll just use the maiden name for the ticket and the one that appears between the angle brackets. And for the field "Are you known by any other names or pseudonyms?", I’d put her married name.

I only use my birth name everywhere—the only name for a married woman, since her husband’s name is just a name of use.

Yes, but the passport is already issued—we can’t remove the “spouse” mention. I think if her maiden name is on all three documents, it’ll be fine. It was mainly about whether I should put her married name in the "other name or alias" field or not.

Just let your wife decide and have her use her married name if she wants to.

Hello, Just like your wife, my passport shows my "maiden name" followed by "married name," but for the ticket and the ESTA, I only use my maiden name, which you can find at the bottom of the passport between the chevrons.

A woman's maiden name is her only legal name, even after marriage—the proof is that we vote under our maiden name.

Personally, I traveled with my mom to NYC in October. On the flight ticket, it was just the last name, and on the ESTA, we put her maiden name, and it went through without any issues.

The birth name is the only legal name; the married name is a usage name and is optional, for that matter.
