J’ai un 4x4 en Namibie depuis janvier 2018. Il est immatriculé en France et nous avons un CPD (Carnet de passage en douane). L'année dernière au moment du premier renouvellement auprès de l’Automobile Club de France , surprise : il fallait aussi payer l’Automobile Club d’Afrique du Sud ... on l’a fait sinon pas de renouvellement. Cette année il y a un refus des douanes d’Afrique du Sud ( pour toute la zone sud australe) qui ne nous autorise pas le renouvellement. On envisage donc de laisser notre voiture en Zambie hors zone SACU et ne traiter qu’avec l’Automobile Club de France . Quelqu’un connait un parking sécurisé pour notre Toyota à Livingstone? Comment faites-vous avec vos voitures ? Merci d’avance

C' est vrai je vis encore (hors d' Afrique) et ai vendu (tristement) mon Defender il y a quelques semaines.
Pour Foley pas de problèmes, je crois dans les 50 US $ par mois dans halle fermée, avec démarrage tous les jours.. Il est juste à côté du garage Toyota, Industrial Road.

Est-ce que tu penses qu’on peut faire immatriculer la voiture en Namibie ? Pour ne plus avoir besoin de CPD par exemple ? Sans avoir de résidence en Namibie ? Je cherche toutes les solutions possibles....
Notre situation n'est pas tout à fait la même que la tienne mais il y a des similitudes.
Nous résidons en France et avons acheté un Defender en Afrique du Sud ; il fallait laisser notre véhicule en AFS si c'était pour une longue durée, sinon traverser une frontière tous les 3 mois si nous décidions de le laisser dans un pays voisin (de la SACU) ou alors payer un Carnet de Passage en Douane pour le laisser en Zambie, en Tanzanie etc... . A force, cela nous compliquait un peu trop la vie et nous avons décidé de faire ré-immatriculer notre Def au Botswana où il séjourne actuellement chez un ami guide.
Nous n'avons jamais regretté notre décision, puisque le Botswana étant assez central, nous récupérons chaque fois la voiture pour sillonner de nouvelles routes en Afrique Australe et plus de problème de garde , de CPD etc...Par contre cela a un coût malgré tout. Je ne serais pas étonnée que les lois soient semblables en Namibie, mais peut-être est-ce un pays un peu plus souple au niveau de la réglementation. Se renseigner...

Ce que je ne comprends pas c’est que tu es resté ds un pays de la SACU . Au final moi je n’avais aucun lien avec l’AFS et je ne voulais que rester en Namibie et sortir une fois par an de la Zone pour respecter les lois compatibles avec le CPD . C’ Est pourquoi j’envIsage d’aller en Zambie pour avoir mon CPD avec l’Automobile Club de France. C’Est d’un compliqué.....
Le choix du Botswana, c'est pour 2 raisons : c'est central et nous y avons une connaissance qui peut nous garder et entretenir notre véhicule toute l'année. Surtout plus besoin de passer une frontière tous les 3 mois, ce qui devenait vraiment galère avec nos emplois du temps et porte monnaie....mais comme je l'ai dit, notre situation n'est pas tout à fait la même puisque nous avons acheté notre véhicule en AFS. Il faut de toute façon avoir une adresse sur place pour faire un changement d'immatriculation.

Peut être en Namibie, demander à Wil Bouwers à Trans Kalahari Inn à Windhoek ( d'ailleurs lieu de gardiennage pour des véhicules), elle pourrait avoir de bons tuyaux....elle nous avait bien dépannés dans le passé.

Pour l'instant les douanes sud africaines refusent le renouvellement du CPD et demandent une importation temporaire...on s'achemine vers une immatriculation en Namibie , si on veut laisser le vehicule.
Pour l' instant on va emmener le 4x4 à Livingstone à l'adresse donnée par Eric. Le CPD ne permet donc pas de rester dans la zone SACU plus que 2 ans il faut , après, bouger ou trouver une autre solution. Pas facile . La dame de l'Automobile club de France m'a dit, jeudi , qu'il fallait absolument sortir de la Zone SACU avant la date de fin du CPD sous peine de se voir confisquer le véhicule par les douanes! Après nous serons en Zambie ...mais avions projeté 15 jours au Kaokoland en Namibie, ça tombe à l'eau je pense...
Je ne savais pas qu'il y avait un maximum de 2 ans dans la SACU avec un CDP 😕
Immatriculer son véhicule en Namibie est plus compliqué qu'au Botswana, du moins à mes yeux.
En plus d'une adresse en Namibie il faut un permis de conduire Namibien. Certes ça n'est pas la mer à boire mais ça m'avait quelque peu rebuté, ce qui fait que nous avons acheté un véhicule au Botswana en le laissant immatriculé là-bas. Au niveau papier ça a été très simple, sur ma blue card il y a écrit expatrié, c'est tout.
Comme l'a dit Magryelle, en plus le Botswana est plus central.
Concernant la Zambie savez-vous si la durée est limitée à une année ?

Tanzanie, là tu m'intéresses, à terme j'aimerais aussi monter jusque là.😉
Mais d'après ce que j'ai trouvé comme infos, la Tanzanie et le Kenya sont très restrictifs concernant le stockage de voiture, c'est 3 mois point ! et encore il faut renouveler au bout d'un mois.
Ca vaudrait le coup de regarder en Ouganda, c'est un très beau pays, d'où on peut facilement rayonner en Tanzanie et au Kenya, mais je n'ai pas trouvé de réponse concernant l'import temporaire de véhicule.
Je suis étonné des restrictions que tu indiques pour Tanzanie et Kenya...à moins que les choses n' aient beaucoup changé depuis mes derniers passages en 2016.
Il avait été question de cette restriction de trois mois à l' époque, mais elle n' a jamais été appliquée, les véhicules sous CPD pouvant rester un an (comme ailleurs, et c'est comme ailleurs une règle non écrite).
Peut être devrais tu demander (comme je l' avais fait à l' époque) à Manfred Lieke, qui stocke des voitures à Arusha ou pour le Kenya à Chris Handshuh (Jungle Junction à Nairobi mail c_handschuh_68@yahoo.com et tel +254722752865).
Je n' ai plus le mail de Manfred Lieke, tu peux le trouver à coup sûr si tu es un peu germaniste sur le site www.wuestenschiff.de (qui est en général très bien documenté sur ce type de questions, ainsi que CPD, assurances, etc..l' inconvénient étant que ce site est en langue allemande (mais tu peux aussi poster en anglais, on te répondra).

Lien vers une très longue discussion à laquelle j' avais à l' époque participé, compris des infos d' octobre 2019..
Il n' y a rien d' absolument clair, il semble cependant que le sujet central pour l' administration tanzanienne soit le paiement de la taxe de circulation ($ 20 par mois) pour les véhicules munis d' un CPD (sans CPD, il y a effectivement une lourde caution à payer après expiration du TIP (qui ne concerne pas les votures avec CPD), mais en celà pas de différence avec les autres pays comme la Zambie ou même l' AFS.
Manifestement, un certain nombre de voyageurs désireux de laisser leur voiture en Tanzanie demandent à l' entrée de payer cette taxe pour une durée d'un an (ce qui semble fonctionner), à tout le moins jusqu' à la date d' expiration du CPD, ils n' ont alors de problèmes ni pour voyager en Tanzanie ni pour y laisser leur véhicule, ni pour sortir avec CPD.
Il y a comme d' habitude en Afrique (et notamment pour les questions de CPD) de grosses incertitudes (tu te rappelles sans doute mon habitude de laisser mon Def chez Foley au delà de la durée du CPD, le sortir de Zam en faisant tamponner le vieux CPD - pour la cohérence des vouchers, et entrer au Zim ou au Malawi ou ailleurs avec un CPD flambant neuf, avec une validité commençant le lendemain de l' expiration du vieux carnet..).
Il n' y a aucune règle écrite là dessus, mais tout se règle sur place avec un peu d' amabilité, de vraissemblance dans le discours, et éventuellement quelques dollars..

Hi there, we’ll be in Mozambique in early December 2026 and we’d like to travel from Vilanculos to Beira by car or bus to reach Beira airport. After that, we’re planning to visit Gorongosa National Park before flying back to France from Beira. We’re planning a 4x4 trip from Belgium to Central Asia, passing through Georgia, Russia, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan.
For these countries, our national insurance obviously doesn’t cover the vehicle, so we’ll need to get local insurance.
Will it be a problem if the vehicle is registered under person A and the national insurance is under person B? Both A and B will be in the vehicle, and both will be listed as drivers on the insurance.
When we get the local insurance, if we again list A and B as drivers, does the order matter? Could we get stuck at the border for this reason?

For those who’ve driven on Iceland’s gravel roads in their own or a rented Duster, could you tell me what tires were fitted on the vehicle?
Were they All Terrain tires or more "standard" ones like all-season tires, for example?
Follow-up question: if they were "standard" tires, did that cause any issues on the gravel roads and rough terrain?

I’m planning a trip to Iceland for next July-August, with a car and tent, and I’m wondering about booking campsites.
From your experience, is it necessary or even essential to book campsites in advance, or do you always manage to find a spot to pitch your tent?
We’ll also have the option to sleep in the car without pitching the tent.
Does that give us the flexibility to stay outside a campsite for a night here and there?

I’m looking for detailed maps of this region that include small roads and tracks.
Last year, we had a fantastic road trip in the Anti-Atlas and High Atlas using Erfahren maps, but unfortunately, they don’t cover the area we’re interested in this year.

We’re planning a 13-day family road trip in Morocco this July, with six people in a Toyota Prado 4x4 (renting in Marrakech).
We’ll alternate between bivouacking and small hotels/riads depending on the stops.
Here’s the planned route (in this order):

Our goal:
Atlas Mountains + desert + dunes + plateaus + valleys + a bit of coastline.
We’ll cover about 1,700 km in total.
We’re planning:
Bivouacking in the Chegaga/Iriki area
Flexible for the rest (booking the day before or same day)
Sand gear: traction plates, compressor, tow strap, roof rack
Questions:
Is the Zagora → Chegaga → Iriki → Foum Zguid crossing in July doable on our own (single vehicle, no guide)?
Are there any truly technical or risky sections between Chegaga and Iriki?
Does the overall itinerary seem manageable in 13 days without rushing?
Any suggestions for great bivouac spots or particularly interesting stops along this route?
The points on the route are provisional overnight stops. Some spots will include two nights in the same area.
We’re used to off-road driving, but not yet in the Moroccan desert.

We’re struggling a bit with timing and choosing activities for the part of the trip between Sesriem and Brandberg.
Day 1: Sesriem to Mirabib
Day 2: Mirabib to Swakopmund – visit Swakopmund, overnight in Swakopmund
Day 3: Sandwich Harbour – overnight in Swakopmund
Day 4: Kayaking with the seals + the living dunes – overnight in Swakopmund
Day 5: Moon Landscape, Henties Bay + Cape Cross – overnight at White Lady Lodge in Brandberg
Does this itinerary seem realistic to you? Is Cape Cross really worth the trip? If I had to choose between Cape Cross and kayaking with the seals, which would you recommend?

However, the rental agencies we’ve found prohibit driving on the tracks to Omalo (Tusheti) and/or Ushguli (Svaneti).
Do you know of any agencies in Tbilisi (local and reliable) that allow rented 4x4s to drive on these tracks? If so, which ones?

I’d love to visit Gonarezhou National Park—I see there are two sectors: the Mwenezi Region in the south and the area around the Runde River in the north. Should I cover both sectors or just focus on the northern region?
For the parks along the Zambezi River, is it better to visit Mana Pools on the Zimbabwe side or Lower Zambezi on the Zambia side?

I’m leaving in November for about a month with the goal of reaching Senegal via Mauritania. I’d love to share this trip with someone who wants to discover Mauritania and a bit of Senegal... and also experience life on board a 4x4 in the desert or bush, sometimes sleeping in the vehicle or in hostels/small hotels for comfort. I want to share this rediscovery because two’s better than one!

I’m planning to explore Argentine and Chilean Patagonia for a month in December 2019.
I’m looking for a rental company (or several) that offers single-cab 4x4 pick-ups with a fitted camper cell for two people. I’m specifically after a vehicle with an indoor shower for extra comfort ;)
So, no vans—at least not from the rental companies I’ve seen so far.
While browsing the forum, I came across the Chilean rental company Holiday Rent. But do you have any recommendations for Argentine rentals?
Because, if I can’t return the vehicle in the same city as pickup, I’d prefer—and it’d likely be cheaper—to at least return it in the same country.
I’m traveling through Argentina and Chile (as well as Paraguay and Uruguay) with a 2019 Toyota Hilux Euro 6. Could anyone tell me if the local diesel is suitable for its engine, or if I need to take any special precautions (like adding an additive, for example) for these countries?
I’d also like to know if driving at high altitudes is possible, and up to what elevation—or if I should worry about the vehicle going into limp mode?

My trip to South Africa is starting to take shape.
However, I'm struggling to figure out the route through Kruger Park. I can't seem to find the information I need about getting around.
Coming from the south, I plan to arrive on Day 1 in the early afternoon at Malelane or Crocodile Bridge.
Do some shopping in Malelane (or Crocodile Bridge main area) and stay overnight outside the park.
Leave on Day 2 at 5 AM for the park. Explore the southern part of the park.
Stay overnight around Skukuza or Lower Sabie. (We don’t want to stay in one of the park’s big camps. We’re looking for a lodge around 200 €.
Head out on Day 3 for a self-drive safari, maybe as far as Orpen.
We’d like to stay in a private reserve on nights 4 and 5.
We’re not sure which one or how to get into a private reserve. Do we need to exit Kruger Park?
On Day 5, we’d like to leave to visit Blyde Canyon (on Day 6).
I’m planning to leave Morocco for the summer but want to leave my 4x4 there to avoid exceeding the famous 6-month limit. I’d like to park it in one of the two Spanish enclaves (Ceuta or Melilla).

I’m finalizing my trip starting from Namibia.
When I arrive in Divundu, I’d like to head straight to the Khwai area early in the morning to one of the campsites in the Khwai Development Trust. Is the drive doable with a good 4x4 in a day?
We’ll spend 2 nights in Khwai, then 2 or maybe 3 nights in the Moremi area (Third Bridge/Xakanaxa/Mboma) before heading back to Maun to wrap up our journey.
Is that too much time to spend in each place?
We’d also like to do one or two boat excursions in the delta. Any suggestions for the best options and operators?

I’m planning to explore the western part of Madagascar from May 1st to 5th, specifically to visit the Tsingy. I’ve heard different versions about the road conditions and access to the Tsingy during this time, so I’d love to hear from people who’ve actually made this trip during this time of year.
Have you traveled from Morondava → Tsingy between May 1st and 5th?
Was the journey doable and safe?
Did you have access to the Grands Tsingy, or just the Petits Tsingy?
