Hi there, We're planning a 2-week trip to Cape Verde, departing from Nantes in February 2027. The only direct flight from Nantes goes to SAO VICENTE. We'd like to visit a maximum of 3 or 4 islands—could you guide us in our choices? THANKS SO MUCH TO FELLOW TRAVELERS!!!!!!! C & JP

Hello!!! So excited you found a direct flight from Nantes!! It's already so rare in general for Cape Verde!! Which airline is it? São Vicente is a great place to land! You can then easily head to Santo Antão and enjoy stunning landscapes and incredible hikes. There are also a few beaches between Santo Antão and São Vicente. Other than that, since inter-island transfers can be a bit tricky here, I’d recommend not trying to visit too many islands. For two weeks, I think three is the max. So you could land in São Vicente, go to Santo Antão (regular ferry connections several times a day), and maybe a third island like Sal if you really want a beach-focused trip—but it’s also much more touristy. You can then leave from Sal on an international flight or take a domestic flight back to SV to head to Europe. Just make sure to leave some buffer time (1-2 days).

I’d say the same thing as ptitortue. (She lives there and obviously knows these islands much better than I do.) 3 islands are plenty for 2 weeks!

The first island I recommend is Santo Antão. If you land in São Vicente, it’s just a 1-hour ferry from Mindelo. 1- Santo Antão is simply stunning and still off the mass-tourism radar. It’s stayed very "natural" and rural, and hasn’t changed much for tourism. That’s rare these days! There are some lovely places to stay in the middle of nature with amazing views—book ahead since there aren’t many, except for simple "gîtes" or guesthouses for hikers. It’s obviously a hiker’s paradise, but even if you’re not one, you can (in my opinion, since we didn’t rent a car) fully enjoy the island by renting a vehicle (or taking taxis) and just doing short walks based on your fitness level. A week isn’t too long to see all its sides, with one or two days at the end on a secluded beach like Tarrafal de Monte Trigo. 2: São Vicente—the island of artists and where you’ll arrive—is worth exploring. The landscapes are really diverse (we drove around with our host). The main city, Mindelo, is lively, with some great restaurants, music, and pretty beaches. 3- Sal or Santiago, since these are the other two islands with return flights to France. Sal is the (almost flat) island of long beaches and mass tourism, as well as a hotspot for kite surfing. The cost of living is higher there. The beaches are vast, and you can easily avoid the crowds—some spots are almost deserted.

PS: If you’re hikers (intermediate or advanced), I can give you details on the best trails in Santo Antão (easy, moderate, and difficult).
