Which company has air-conditioned buses in Kerala?

Hi there,

I’m heading to Kerala in December. I’ve been searching without luck for air-conditioned buses, minivans—basically anything that’s not a bus without AC or windows, since my route from Cochin to Munnar is gonna be a long one and I don’t wanna struggle.

I checked around, and it’s crazy—you can’t find the name of a single private company, just overpriced transfers!

From what I can tell, it seems like there’s nothing but local buses… yet I went to Sri Lanka two years ago and there were plenty of options.

Thanks in advance for any tips! Caroline

Hello,

J'ai été voir c'est hallucinant on ne trouve aucun nom de compagnie privée

Really? Where did you look? Do you know where to search?

A part des bus locaux j'ai l'impression qu'il n'y a rien.

This kind of search isn’t based on impressions. Maybe that’s why you didn’t find anything.

There are modern, air-conditioned buses all over India. You need to check private companies. I’d be really surprised if there weren’t any between Cochin and Munnar. The Redbus website lets you browse them. But there’s no need to book too far in advance—usually, booking the day before at a private agency is enough, or two days ahead if you want to be sure.

pourtant j'ai fait le Sri lanka il y a deux ans et il y en avait....

What a coincidence—I "did" Croatia, and they had them too!

If you're also thinking of "doing" India, I'm afraid it might be India that "does" you instead.

There are private, air-conditioned buses all over Kerala. And you'll be spoiled for choice. Wait until you're there to book...

I went to check it out—it’s mind-blowing

Indeed, your image of India—and Kerala in particular—is pretty mind-blowing...

Hi there,

Well, there you go!!!

I’ve been traveling for 20 years, so comments that don’t provide real answers are useless... I create all my travel journals, but this time I’m stuck... all I see is that I should leave from Ernakulam with local buses. Here’s RedBus and co. WHAT ELSE

If you’ve got something concrete, don’t hesitate—otherwise, bon voyage!

I mean, these are points that were hard not to react to 😄
CA Caroline062 ·
Hi there 👋

I even asked the people I’m staying with in Cochin. They tell me: Departure from Ernakulam for the buses... And on Google with KSRTC, only 2 departures at dawn... Actually, no one knows any private companies. So that I’m told once I’m there that I *have* to leave from Ernakulam bus stand—might as well stay in Ernakulam 😅 Have a great day

It's still a ways off, but thank you so much

I really don’t like the expression "taking a trip" either. It was Nicolas Bouvier who wrote, "You think you’re taking a trip, but it’s the trip that makes or breaks you."

These days, consumer society has done its job. Many people buy "trips" as ready-made packages, with no room for surprise or spontaneity.

I also think VoyageForum should be careful not to get carried away with ads promoting the "best guide or driver in this or that Indian state."

First of all... what I really don’t like are people who don’t say "hello"—it’s the bare minimum to start a conversation and show respect for others! At 60, I don’t care what you think, and I’ve been creating my own travel journals for 15 years without using an agency. As a seasoned traveler... tell me... have you visited Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam, Bali, Sri Lanka, Guadeloupe, the Dominican Republic, Canada, etc.? I have! And with travel companions, so I couldn’t care less about your comments—this forum is for "real" travelers!!! I asked a question... do you have the answer? No!!! So learn respect, values, kindness, and mutual support—only then can you speak up! Happy meditating! !

Hello Madam, Your response does come across as a bit aggressive! I was simply clarifying Marien’s reference to Nicolas Bouvier and quickly sharing my thoughts on how travel styles have evolved. Given the trips you’ve taken, you consider yourself a seasoned traveler—so you should know that patience is key. That’s especially true in India. You’ll have no trouble finding your buses, trains, hotels, etc. Wishing you a wonderful trip to India!😊

Stay calm as much as possible. This is especially true for India. You’ll find your buses, trains, hotels, etc., without any problem.

There you go, that sums it up. In India, it’s easy to find hotels and transportation even without too much planning. But staying calm is the golden rule for a successful trip.
CA Caroline062 ·
Hello

I’m not being aggressive at all, but before I speak to anyone, I say "hello," and I also like concrete details... A piece of information that no one has been able to provide, unfortunately. I’m asking those who say there are private buses to give the name of the company, but no one—aside from telling me they exist—has been able to answer.

There you go... a forum is meant to inform people, not just share opinions or give vague answers. Take care
PA Pagaljavab Globetrotter ·
HELLO,

Actually, if no one is giving you the name of a private bus company outright, it’s because seasoned travelers in India who use public transport don’t operate that way. When we travel in India, we simply check out each option on the spot—there’s no point in planning too much in advance, except for certain trains.

It’s completely unnecessary to know the name of a company. All you need to do is go to a private agency that’ll show you all the options with every available company for your desired route. If there are no private buses, we fall back on public buses, which run several times a day without needing a reservation.

I also agree with the other members that your tone comes off as a bit aggressive. You’re asking for advice from people who know India well, yet you dismiss their answers with contempt. Honestly, the lack of tact and nuance in your first message could’ve easily warranted being ignored.

Anyway, I’m giving you the link to Redbus, a site that lists almost all possible routes in India—public or private—and is even used by street agencies in India. Yet you say we’re not giving you anything concrete! So yes, you’re at least a little aggressive. This isn’t just a feeling—it’s a fact.

A few non-exhaustive examples of aggression:

At 60, I don’t care what you think, and I’ve been creating all my travel journals for 15 years without using an agency

Don’t feel like you’re above everyone else—here, almost everyone travels this way. When you say you "create all your travel journals without using an agency," I think you actually mean you plan your itineraries yourself. A travel journal is a recount of your trip, not just an itinerary.

As a seasoned traveler… tell me… have you visited… Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam, Bali, Sri Lanka, Guadeloupe, the Dominican Republic, Canada, etc.? I have!

Others have also visited countries you haven’t. Being a seasoned traveler doesn’t mean you’ve done the same trips as everyone else.

And with a co-traveler, so I couldn’t care less about your comments

Ah, here’s something new! Traveling with co-travelers is proof you’re a *real* seasoned traveler? Is that a joke? Or did I miss something? (What aggression in that reply, by the way.)

This forum is for "real" travelers!!!

It’s not a competition, but you’re talking to people who’ve likely traveled more than you (even if not always with co-travelers, I’ll admit). You should show a little humility and calm down—your tone is still aggressive.

If this isn’t a prank, I’d advise you to work on staying calm before your trip. India demands a lot of patience, and your co-traveler might not handle it well…

Don’t feel too superior—here, almost everyone travels this way. When you say you "create all your travel journals without using an agency," I think you actually mean you plan your itineraries yourself. A travel journal is an account you write to share your trip.

As a seasoned traveler… tell me… have you visited… Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam, Bali, Sri Lanka, Guadeloupe, the Dominican Republic, Canada, etc.? I have!

Well said! I’d add not just aggression, but authoritarianism! Everyone, fall in line! And jump to it!

Hello,

Think what you want, I don’t care because... well, I’ve traveled a lot. Telling people to just go through an agency is like having ancestors from La Palice in your family tree huh? If I don’t know something, I keep quiet... I’m familiar with RedBus, Volvo, and KSRTC... I checked on Google... and there are no schedules except at dawn, or the page says NOT FOUND. So this forum is completely useless... Safe travels,
PA Pagaljavab Globetrotter ·
I’ve already told you that this is what regular India travelers do: go to a street-side agency to book. What more do you want us to say?

You’d almost wonder why you even came here to ask for useless information that you’re perfectly capable of finding yourself—especially since, according to you, you’re "a seasoned backpacker who keeps her own travel journals." Besides, your aggressive insistence on repeating that in every single line, even though no one brought it up, just shows you need to convince yourself you’re a real traveler. The thing is, the way you ask for advice, your preconceived notions about the destination, your dismissive attitude toward the answers you get, and your overall negative mindset clearly prove otherwise.

Or maybe you’re just a troll, which, in a way, would actually be reassuring.

So this forum is completely useless...

Then why are you still here?
