Hi there, I’m planning to visit the Cotahuasi area in a few months. I’d like to know which bus companies operate the Arequipa to Cotahuasi route and which ones are the safest in terms of avoiding accidents. Is the road passable if we rent a car to get there? Has anyone reading this traveled by car to this destination? Thanks in advance for your reply.

Reyna Transport operates direct buses from Arequipa to Cotahuasi twice a day, with an average journey time of 8 hours. Tickets cost between $14 and $29 (around S/ 50 to 100 depending on the current exchange rate). Departures are from the Arequipa station, and arrival is at the Cotahuasi station.

Other companies like Transportes Inmaculada and Transportes Angeles Tour also serve this route, with similar schedules and fares.

Distance: Around 240 miles (386 km) by road. Best car-free option: The bus is the most economical and practical solution. Driving: By car, the trip takes about 6h 19min, but requires good road conditions and a driver’s license. To book, check out these sites:

reyna.com.pe redbus.pe recorrido.pe

REYNA seems the most reliable to me. The others look like tour operators with minibuses. Worth checking out.

Reyna and Cromotex operate the route between Arequipa and Cotahuasi.

The road has improved a lot in recent years—it's now almost 100% paved.

I think a rental vehicle is worth it if you're planning a big road trip over several days and want to reach the different villages in the valley. If you're going hiking, you can use local buses or private transfers from Cotahuasi.

Either way, you’ll need a bit of time—this is deep Peru!
