Hi there,
I’d love to hear your thoughts on a trip to New Zealand in a campervan. Is it a good idea to mix hotels and a car on the North Island and a campervan on the South Island? Or should I do the whole trip in a campervan—though visiting big cities seems trickier that way.
Other questions: which companies do you recommend, and what are the least tiring or most sensible routes?
Thanks for sharing your experiences and ideas!
We're heading to New Zealand at the end of January, in 1 month
We’ve planned to stay a few days in Auckland, then pick up a campervan to explore both islands. I’m not sure if it’s the best option, but it’s the simplest one for us. We’ll finish our trip in the campervan in Queenstown.
For the big cities, since we’ve already done Australia several times in a campervan, we’ve always managed to find a parking spot close to the center. Hopefully, it’ll be the same in New Zealand...
For the campervan, we went through Camperdays this time, and we’re trying Campstar.
Re: Questions about a campervan trip in New Zealand
Hello, thank you for your reply, and I’m looking forward to a little travel journal if it’s not too much to ask. Wishing you a great trip and wonderful discoveries!
See you soon!
Re: Questions about a campervan trip in New Zealand
Hi there,
We went to New Zealand in February 2025, where we rented a campervan for two months.
First thing to know: wild camping is banned. On the other hand, it’s the most campervan-friendly country you’ll find.
You can follow our journey on our website:

We’re traveling the world in a campervan.
