Questions for Thailand trip during the holidays

Hello, I’m traveling with 2 adults and 2 kids for the Christmas 2025 holidays. Here’s my plan: - 2 nights in Bangkok - 1 night in Ayutthaya (then an overnight train) - 3 nights in Chiang Mai (flight to Krabi) - 4 nights on Koh Lanta - 2 nights in Railay (flight back to Bangkok) - 1 night in Bangkok I have a few questions: 1) For Bangkok: how do you organize a visit to the klongs? Can I easily find an agency on the spot? 2) Do I need to book the bus or train to Ayutthaya in advance? 3) Chiang Mai. I’m planning one day for temple sightseeing + Doi Suthep, and I’m debating between two options for the other two days: - Option 1: Day 1: Doi Inthanon day trip + Day 2: elephant experience for the kids. - Option 2: 2 days/1 night for a trek, staying in a village, and seeing elephants. Whichever I choose, should I book in advance? Any tips or suggestions for good, affordable activities? What do you think of Get Your Guide excursions? Thanks for your advice!

Hi,

Do you already know what time the flight arrives in BKK?

Hi, Yes at 6:30 PM on Thursday, December 18th. Visiting temples on Friday the 19th, klong or market on Saturday the 20th before heading to Ayutthaya in the afternoon. I still have a full day (until 3 PM) on the last day, January 1st.

6:30 PM, so late + night + massive traffic jams = I wouldn’t recommend rushing straight to Ayutthaya.

Bangkok: how to organize a visit to the klongs? (...) Temple visits on Friday the 19th

It’s the day you visit the Wat Phra Kheo/Po/Arun temples, so it’ll be better to take a boat trip on the khlongs since everything (or most of it) is in the same area. Finding a boat for the khlongs is easy—just go to the pier at the west end of the street in front of the Grand Palace/Wat Phra Kheo entrance, and you’ll be approached. After all these visits and walks, you’ll be exhausted, so it’s best to stay in the Banglamphu/Khao San Road area.

No need to book the bus or train to Ayutthaya?

I don’t know if the bus line from Mo Chit still exists. If it does, no need to book. Ayutthaya is served by many "thamada" (ordinary) suburban trains that don’t require reservations—you can take one from Hualamphong Station. If you take it from Aphiwat Station, you might need to book because many are Express or Rapid long-distance trains (but all heading north and northeast stop in Ayutthaya). It’s not worth paying extra for a Rapid or Express train for such a short trip. If you’re traveling light (no luggage hold), the best options are the minivans that leave frequently from Mo Chit Minivan Terminal. If you’re traveling heavy and/or with bulky luggage (suitcases, etc.), you can buy an extra seat for your bags—just 3-4 € more. No need to book.

3 nights in Chiang Mai

That’s too few. I’d take at least one night from the south and add it here.

2 days/1 night for trekking, sleeping in a village, elephants.

Don’t get your hopes up—with 2 days/1 night, it’ll just be a day trip marketed as a "trek." Whether it’s for that, Doi Inthanon, elephants, or any other activity, booking the day before for the next day is enough. No need to rush around agencies—your accommodation’s reception will happily arrange it for you, often with little to no price difference. They can also find you a car (or songthaew) with a driver. When you book an excursion or activity, they’ll pick you up and drop you off at your accommodation.

And the other two days?

If you’re out of ideas, don’t worry—you’ll find racks near the reception in most accommodations filled with brochures/flyers from tour operators and agencies offering all kinds of activities and visits that’ll inspire you and your kids. And you’ll regret not being able to stay in Chiang Mai much longer...

What do you think of Get Your Guide excursions?

That it’s a site that’s at best completely useless—don’t fall for it.

You're going to spend your trip in transit; you should've limited yourself to 3 destinations.
