Los Angeles/Grand Canyon.
Premierement, partez tres, tres tot de Los Angeles, le circulation peu etre difficile.
Une fois que vous serez sur le Freeway I-15 la circulation sera facile et entre Barstow et Needles il y a peu de circulation.
Si la Route 66 presente un interet pour vous, passez par Oatman, on y accede depuis le Freeway I-40 en prenant la Route 66 a Topock apres avoir passe la frontiere en traversant le Colorado.
Premiere sortie.
Ce detour vous ralongera environ d'une heure avec un petit arret a Oatman.
Allez jusqu'a Williams pour passer la nuit.
Il n'y a presque rien a Seligman et vous allez vous ennuyer.
A Williams, l'ete il y a des spectacles dans la rue (Route 66) gratuits..
Vous serez plus pres du Grand Canyon.

Kingman pour manger sur la route c'est pas mal il y'a plein de fast food

En effet, Williams est plus agréable que Seligman pour y passer la nuit.
Si jamais, les animations dans la ville ont lieu vers 19h. en été mais si vous arrivez tard et que tout est fermé, vous pourrez toujours prendre un moment le lendemain matin pour faire une petite balade...

En partant tôt de LA, vous aurez aisément le temps de passer par Oatman et de faire un petit arrêt à Seligman.

Ça dépend, s'il s'agit de petites villes les restos ferment parfois tôt. En général, les horaires sont indiqués sur leur site.
Nous étions arrivés vers 20h. à Williams et avions mangé au Red Raven, ils acceptent les clients jusqu'à 21h.
Mais j'avais noté, au cas où, le Kicks on Route 66 qui ferme à 22h. en semaine et 23h. ven. / sam.
j ai bien compris qu on était dans le mythe et qu il n y avait plus grand chose à voir
pour ma part, je couche à holbrook où j aurais visiter la petrified forest et paint desert
j aurais vu le rock shop d holbrook et le wigam hotel mais après .?

Il est possible que d'autres personnes consirent la Route 66 comme un Mythe.
Au livre que nous avons ecrit sur la Route 66 nous avons donne le titre de " Mythique Route 66"

Je l'ai souvent dis ici, avant de vous connaitre sur ce forum, que j'avais parcouru la Route 66 pour la premiere fois en 1964, alors qu'il restait de la Route 66 beaucoup plus que ce qu'on y voit de nos jours. J'avais en 1964 pris des photos en noir et blanc, je ne sais ou elles sont, perdues sans doute.

Vous pouvez prendre la Route 66 entre Bellemont et Williams et vous verrez certaines portions dans l'etat ou elle etait il y a 50 ans. Route que j'ai prise alors que les Freeways n'etaient pas encore termines.
A Two Guns vous verrez ou la Route 66 passait sur le petit pont.
A Winslow il y a un petit centre ville.
The Rabbit Trading Post, inutile, ce n'est qu'une trappe a touristes.

Pour bien comprendre la Route 66 il faut la visiter tranquilement de bout en bout sinon il est difficile de realiser ce qu'elle est.
Je suis d'accord sur le principe.
Si l'on ne visite que la partie de l'Arizona et de la California de la Route 66 on ne voit plus grand chose.
Là je suis moins d'accord. Je sais qu'il n'en reste que quelques petites portions, je ne nie pas. Et bien évidemment on en voit nettement moins, c'est certain et indéniable. Mais ça donne déjà une bonne idée de ce qu'est l'esprit de la Route 66, à condition évidemment d'y prendre un peu son temps. Je n'ai vu la Route 66 qu'en Arizona et Californie (et encore, pas toutes les parties !), mais j'y ai des souvenirs extraordinaires, j'ai y rencontré des gens merveilleux, avec qui j'ai pu discuter un peu des raisons pour lesquelles ils restent ici, des rencontres vraiment émouvantes, j'y ai vu de beaux paysages, l'esprit décalé ma plu aussi.
Bref, tout ça pour dire que lors de la boucle classique que tous les voyageurs font lors d'un premier voyage dans l'ouest, si vous avez l'occasion d'emprunter des portions de la Route 66 et que vous êtes un peu sensible à son histoire... n'hésitez pas. OK, c'est pas pareil que faire la Route 66 de bout en bout de Chicago à Santa Monica, mais ça peut s'avérer très chouette quand même. 🙂

Je confirme, puisque la 1ère fois ns y sommes arrivés bien + tard que prévu (la faute à un accident sur l'autoroute) , et la nuit à peine tombée, y avait plus un chat nulle part et aucune lumière.

Ca dépend aussi du programme des jours d'après c'est à dire 1 ou 2 jours au Grand Canyon. Perso, cet été, nous avons dormi à Kingman et le lendemain matin : Seligman, William et Beararizona avant d'arriver vers 13h au Grand Canyon. Après, on restait deux jours donc ... 😉

On garde toujours des souvenirs de la Route 66.
Ce que je me souviens le mieux est ces nuages de poussiere qu'il fallait avaler sur cette Route 66.
Le Freeway I-40 etait en construction et des files de voitures a n'en plus finir.
Je me souviens aussi de ce panneau qui indiquait: "NO gas for the next 160 miles"
Ce sont des souvenirs que l'on n'oublie pas.

Nous comptons faire le survol de GC dès le matin à 9H00 puis on passera la journée au GC ainsi que la nuit suivante. Ensuite départ au matin pour aller à Monument Valley. Du coup je pense qu'aller à Williams le soir serait bien car ça nous permettrait de prendre un peu plus le temps pour arriver à l'aérodrome deTusayan le matin... De plus selon les réponses reçues il y aurait possibilité de manger un peu plus tard à Williams, bien qu'on soit limite hors saison ( mi avril..).

Super le survol ! L'un de mes plus beaux moments cette année (et pourtant, c'était ma 4e fois au Grand canyon!). Vous pensez bien à réserver je suppose 😉. Nous avions pris Papillon. Impec, je recommande.
Si vous avez rendez-vous à 9h, dormez donc à Williams c'est toujours plus près que Seligman. Comptez une heure et un peu de marge car avec les campings car ou trucks, il est possible de perdre un peu de temps car ce n'est pas toujours évident de doubler sur cette voie en double sens.
Pour Page, habituellement je campe donc je n'ai pas testé beaucoup d'hotel sur cette ville. Cette année nous avons pris le ressort de la Marina de Wahweap. Sympa lorsque l'on prend les chambres vu sur le lac avec le balcon. Je recommande d'ailleurs de prendre les chambres en rdc. Comme cela, on peut sortir sur les pelouses devant et aller voir les lapins 😉. Je dois dire que c'est assez hors de prix mais l'expérience au bord du lac est vraiment chouette. C'est sympa de prendre le petit dej le matin en regardant le lac.
Si tu veux des conseils hotel sur d'autres villes n'hésites pas 😉. D'ailleurs, attention à Monument Valley, en terre Navajo pas d'alcool. Cela veut dire que pas d'apéro au bar, pas de vin à table, rien. Perso, je prends toujours quelques bières en glacière pour l'apéritif à l'hotel 😎

pour le survol du GC c'est déjà réservé effectivement mais on a opté pour le petit coucou car à 4 ça faisait mal au budget en hélico... une autre fois peut-être?...

Pour Los angeles et SF, je te recommande Airbnb. Nous avons fait ce choix cette année et ce fut sur super expérience. très très bon rapport qualité prix. A défaut, à SF, je te recommande l'Argonaute à Fisherman wraft.
A Vegas, je te conseille de rester dans le carré d'or c'est à dire entre l'Aria, le Ceasar le palazzo et le planet hollywood. Dans ce carré tu pourrais faire beaucoup de choses à pied sans prendre ta voiture. Il faut bien voir que les hôtels sont immenses et que la distance entre les hôtels est importante.
Perso, j'ai beaucoup aimé le Trump (or du carré par contre), le Elara (super rapport qualité prix ) le Vdara pour le rapport qualité prix des chambres et l'accès direct au bellagio. Par contre, j'ai trouvé le Bellagio over priced tout comme l'Aria. Après, cela reste de très beaux hotels ...
Vous pouvez aussi opter pour commencer à vous avancer sur la route en quittant LA en fin d'après-midi.
Tout dépend de votre programme des jours précédents et plus précisément si pour votre dernière journée à LA , votre soirée est importante (visites, autres ?) .
En consultant votre profil, je n'ai rien vu sur votre programme (donc pas d'infos sur votre séjour à LA).
Nous, cet été c'est l'option que nous avions choisie, quitter LA en fin d'AM, pour nous avancer sur cette route (pour laquelle je m'étais aussi pas mal interrogée au vu de la durée de ce parcours). Nous nous étions avancés jusqu'à Barstow et cela nous avez convenu.
Toute la journée à LA, plus précisément la côte (venice, santa Monica..) et vers la fin d'AM, après avoir bien profité de notre journée, nous avons "décollé" vers Barstow mais pour nous rien n'était au programme pour le soir sur LA.
Attention, Barstow est un "trou", rien à y voir, juste une étape "dodo" donc ce n'est pas nécessaire d'y arriver trop top.
Quant au survol du GC, si vous avez opté pour un vol à 9h du matin pour votre "arrivée" sachez que le RDV à l' héliport, d'après mon souvenir de cet été, est donné il me semble 45 minutes avant l'heure de décollage, donc à intégrer dans votre timing du matin pour rejoindre TUSAYAN.

Alcatraz !!! Là c'est affaire de gouts ! Certains aiment , perso en 4 passages à SFO qui est une ville qu'on adore , jamais nous n'avons éprouvé l'envie d'y aller 🤪
A mon avis à Page , 1 seul Antelope Canyon est suffisant ( plutôt le Lower ) .
Enfin , prendre la route juste après une journée à Universal , ne me semble pas très judicieux ( fatigue )😕

+1 pour Alcatraz. L'idéal est de prendre le premier bateau et dès arrivé sur l'ile de monter dans la prison sans attendre des autres. De cette manière vous serez seul dans la prison pendant bien 20 minutes. Frissons assuré ! 😛😉
Par contre, si vous ne réservez pas à l'avance vous n'aurez aucune chance de voir alcatraz car il n'y a jamais de place dispo sur place. Plus vous réservez tôt, mieux c'est 😉

Hello everyone! Really damaged due to flooding caused by runoff after forest fires (a total mess!), does anyone in this friendly forum have any updates on the Apache Trail between Apache Junction and Roosevelt Dam? Is there still a section of the road that’s tough to navigate?
We're leaving at the end of June and will be driving the route between Buffalo and Cody. We’ve already booked our accommodations and a rodeo in Cody, but during the day, we’ll be driving between the two and I’m unsure about the itinerary.
Which route do you think is the most pleasant, interesting, or scenic between:
- The northern route via Highway 14 with Sheridan, Lowell, etc.
- The southern route with Highways 16/20/14, passing by Loaf Mountain Overlook, Powder River Pass, Ten Sleep Canyon...
We’ll be in a car, so we should be able to drive on any road.

I’m almost done planning our September road trip. After our 3-night visit to Sequoia, we’ll have a stopover night in Coalinga (to break up the drive). We’ll be staying two nights in Monterey and would like to stop along the way to visit one side of Pinnacles National Park. We’re torn between the West entrance and the East entrance, and we’d like to do a short hike of no more than 2 hours since we don’t want to arrive too late in Monterey.
This park is split into two distinct zones with no connection between them, and the mileage from Coalinga to Monterey is pretty much the same for both. Which area do you recommend visiting—east or west? And which route is the most scenic?
I’ve spotted two short hikes:
- East: Moses Spring to Rim Trail Loop
- West: Balconies Cliffs Cave Loop
Has anyone been there, or do you have another hike to suggest?

After our first trip as a young couple to the West in 2007 (yes, that doesn’t make us any younger!), we’re planning to go back in 2028, but this time as a family of four! (We have two boys who’ll be 5½ and 13 years old in the summer of 2028.)
Our plan is to combine a few big cities (SF and LA, maybe San Diego) with national parks and state parks, mostly!
Ideally, we’d like to leave at the end of June and head back to France around July 19–20, so we can enjoy the first week of the Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
Since we already did the "loop" in 2007, there are must-see places we absolutely want to revisit—and especially share with our kids: Bryce Canyon, Yosemite, and above all, the Grand Canyon, which is still the most incredible thing I’ve ever seen on Earth!
On the other hand, some places didn’t leave a big impression on us for various reasons, so we’re not making them a priority: Antelope Canyon, Monument Valley, for example.
We’re planning ahead, but might as well be smart about it😏

Just a quick question about King Canyon and Sequoia National Park.
Before our night in Miramonte, we plan to visit King Canyon. The next stop will be two nights in Three Rivers to explore Sequoia National Park. I wanted to go all the way to Roaring River Falls on the King Canyon Scenic Byway and then turn back to head to Miramonte. Since we’re coming from Oakhurst, Google Maps says it’s 300 km and 5 hours of driving. Since we also want to hike to see the sequoias (Big Stump Area and Grand Grove) before tackling the King Canyon Scenic Byway, the timing’s going to be tight. How far do you recommend going before turning back to miss as few points of interest as possible on the King Canyon Scenic Byway? Thanks for your advice, and have a great evening!

We’ll be alternating between house swaps, motels, and campgrounds. I’ve booked all the accommodations (except the campground at Bryce since sunset bookings open only 14 days in advance) and the first activities, as well as the most touristy ones.

I’d like to travel along I-15N from San Diego to Las Vegas with my mom, who’s 67. We’ve explored Northern California and the California Coast over the past two years and now want to continue through the desert.
There are several attractions along the way:

- Desert Discovery Center and visit the Old Woman meteorite
- Joshua Tree National Park
- Mojave Desert
- Mojave National Preserve
- Anza-Borrego Desert State Park
- Silverwood Lake
My mom has back issues that prevent her from hiking or walking on trails with elevation changes. Is it possible to visit these places by car, or are the routes flat enough?
I’d love for her to experience the desert with an itinerary adapted to her condition. I’m also open to other points of interest that aren’t mentioned. We have 3-4 days for the trip, so we’re not in a rush—just want to explore.
I’d love to take a road trip and visit Nova Scotia. I’d appreciate some info on the best cities to see and the most interesting spots. The trip should last about 10 to 15 days, staying in hotels or motels. Thanks in advance!

**Viewpoints on the East Side:**
Are most of the viewpoints (Balancing Rock, Granite Cave, Bonsai Rock, etc.) right by the road, or do you have to hike to reach them?
**Donner Memorial State Park:**
Is it worth making a detour to Truckee to visit this park and the Truckee historic downtown?

I’m a total USA addict. I’ve already done several road trips, including the East Coast and West Coast.
I’m here today because I’m planning to go back for another road trip on the West Coast. Possibly with one of my sisters and a couple of friends. It’s still just a plan for now, but I’m working on an itinerary in the meantime. Ideally, I’d leave in 2026, but I don’t have the exact dates yet—maybe April-May or September-October.
My last trip to the West Coast was in September 2014. We went for 2 weeks, but this time it’d be 3 weeks. What made me want to go back was simply a colleague who just left today. As I’m writing this, he’s on the plane. I’m so happy for him, but now all I can think about is going back.
Since I recently went to NY, I noticed that prices have really gone up. I assume the same is true for the West Coast? For 2 people over 3 weeks, what budget should I expect? We’re the type to watch our spending and find great tips.
I think we’ll arrive in San Francisco like the first time and leave from either Los Angeles or Las Vegas.

I assume many of you already know, but the America the Beautiful annual pass, which was $80, will increase to $250 starting January 1, 2026.
So if you're planning to travel before the end of December 2026, it's in your best interest to buy your pass in December 2025, since it will still cost $80 and be valid until the end of December 2026 if you purchase it in December 2025.
This price increase only applies to non-U.S. residents.
Additionally, for those who planned to visit just one park, a $100 surcharge per person will apply to access a list of 11 national parks...
For example, if there are 4 of you in a car, you’ll have to pay $35 + $400,
which comes to $435 to visit one of the 11 parks on the list (I don’t have all of them... Bryce, Zion, Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Grand Teton, etc.).
Total madness.
The goal is to push people who only visit one park into buying the annual pass.
Last point: free entry days are over for non-residents!

We just finished 9 days in the American West and wanted to share our experience because we had an amazing time.
I know some of you might ask, why use an agency? Honestly, we didn’t really feel like doing all the driving and planning, especially since we didn’t know the area at all. And since our English isn’t great, having French-speaking guides was a big comfort.
We found Emmanuelle and Isabelle, and wow, they were fantastic. It was just the two of us with them, so it was a truly VIP, ultra-personalized experience. The service was really personalized. They adapted to our pace and preferences, and we could stop whenever we wanted to take photos. It’s the luxury of being in a small private group—you’re not just a number on a big bus.
In short, we really felt like we were traveling with friends rather than professional guides. Everything’s included in the price (hotel pickup, meals, park entries, etc.), so the value for money is fair.
We loved it so much that we’re already planning to come back next year to explore other areas with them. I think we’ve caught the American West bug—it’s all we can think about, and we can’t wait to return.
